crappie,

lots of pike in the river, and 6 will do ok, now that 5'5" rod might not help matters, we'll check out the warm water outlet if i make it out tomorrow.

The Beaver Creek dumps in a mile or so below GR Dam & when the conditions are right a few sometimes run up it & then crank into the Jackson cut-off & will be found below the Dam for the Weston water treatment plant. It was about 3 miles from my Dad's home & he has even took a few Kings & 1 Brown from the Weston Dam ~ it is a very small area & ya have to hit it right after the high water goes down & before they leave or get fished out.

Just thought I'd pass on a lil' Info,

Hi,
If you want some great fishing try up at Grandrapids dam.there are some great holes at the bottom of the dam.You can catch Walleyes,Crappie,Smallmouth Bass,Steelhead in the holes and maybe a Salmon. The river is way up right now.there is a Island in the middle of the River and there is Holes on both sides of the Island .You have to be real Careful as these holes are rock shelves that drop right off to about 6 to 8 ft deep.

Bayshore Power Plant. is producing a few Eyes and a couple steelhead. ;)

Those GR dam holes provided us kids with both fish & swimim' fun when grownin' up. That's when the farm work was done, we'd jump on our bikes & spend our "Lazy Hazy Days" of summer there .. Good memories!:)

Thanks

The Maumee River offers fine catches of northern pike, smallmouth bass, crappie, catfish and an occasional walleye

I luved to fish that res .. If mem serves me correctly they had to re-fill it because of some problems after it was 1st built .. anyway I've been around it so many times just killin' L-Bass on spinnerbaits castin' many years ago with alot of 2 & 3s & one 4 lber .. even cartopped it a couple of times & did fair on eatin' size W-Eyes. Where the c-cret pad is at the place where the water comes in, if you look closely, both of my sons names & dates are on it - yep, they could not resist the fresh pour:rolleyes: :p .. that was also a good Crappie spot when they were pumpin'

later gator:)

bob oh

Yeah they had to drain it cause there were 6 or 7 poorly capped oil wells in the bottom and it was filling the graves next door full of water. They recapped the old wells and re-filled. Haven't fished it for years but understand it is still good. They have built a new one right next to it and they don't allow any boats -- afraid of Zebra mussels.... If I lived there they would allow boats or there would be a referendum recall for mayor and council :-)

Since 91' I have lived at the lake full-time & didn't realize that NB had a new res .. could you tell me how many acres & when it was filled at North Baltimore?

Thanks Ray

I fish Maumee alot and catch alot of smallies and catfish on homade spinners. Nothign too large yet ..18.5 last summer is my biggest but o what fun. I let them towm me around in my kayak. I have tried GR dam and have seen one pike taken by a little kid. I always hook the biggest mirror carp you can imagine nothing toothy. Myabe this is the year however . Has anyone been to Turkey foot creek for the crappies yet? I might try it this weekend.

01-21-2003, 07:30 AM
Ray, It was filled last year, but I'm not sure on the acreage -- about same saize of old one which I believe was 27 acres.... I'll try to check. They don't allow boats on either res now cause of Zebra fears.

when do the 'eyes start to move up river?

Lunker

late Febuary

Maumeemoon
01-23-2003, 11:05 AM
Although eyes can be caught in January and February- the biggest indication of their movements upstream is water temperature. After ice some will move to the spawning areas- I believe the river resident pop. shows up first, then once the water gets in the 35+ range you will start to see more fish movement. You can fish for em in Feb. but there is nowhere near the #'s that exist in late March early April when the river is chock full of eyes. There is a small # of resident eyes in the river year round, so theoretically if you can find 'em you can catch em-but that's another story. Hope this helps.

Excellent post/reply :)

.. I have a couple of friends up there that occasionally brave the winter cold & hang a few resident Eyes from the providence side of the GR dam wadin' out in the open area.

Maumeemoon
01-23-2003, 12:17 PM
Erie - What are your buddies using for those eyes? Jigs, minnows?- I'm curious -very few people target the resident population. I have caught some in August and September in years past in a few different holes- The residents I've caught have always come on baby bass floating rapalas.-

Erie
01-23-2003, 12:51 PM
They start out fishin' the pool's swing with Panther Martins/active & then clean up with jigs w/T-Tails/neutral Eyes.

Maumeemoon

Although there is an open channel along the shore in sidecut, there is still alot of ice and floating ice. My wife said she saw four people putting on waders to go into the river late last week on her way home from work. I haven't seen anyone in the river. I'll wait till after ice-out and until the river water hits 37-39 degrees before I start looking for them. If you do go out, watch out with all the ice, if you go down this time of year it can be lethal.

Walleye Fish Report:

Maumee River- The river presently contains a lot of ice. However, temperatures are expected to warm this week. Walleye normally begin coming up the river around beginning to mid-March. It looks like the run will be delayed this year due to cold temperatures. Outlook for this year is excellent when river conditions improve.

Sandusky River- Ice Covered. The river also is ice covered. It looks like the run will be delayed this year. Outlook for this year is excellent when river conditions improve.

The river is ice free and roarin'. The water is currently on its way down and somewhere around 587 ft. The clarity is horrible and the temperature is on the rise, somewhere north of 35 F today, so things should start looking up if this impending rain doesn't flood us out. Good Luck!

Lunker

Well I got out for a little bit before sunset. More gars. One walleye caught next to me. I did keep a small gar to see if I could scare my little cousins with it and see if I could clean it. It took tin snips to skin it and I only kept the back straps. Its like a rattle snake under those scales. I guess the big ones in Arkansas are pretty good so I kept it. Heard somebody snagged a big flathead today at GR. Jerk kept it too. I hope he gets caught bragging around an undercover DNR.

Does anyone ice fish the South Turkeyfoot anymore when the river is in good shape?? ~ I grew up a few miles from there on a farm outside of McClure & there used to be a good size Crappie gang at the mouth by the rt#65 bridge.

But Dad used to slip upstream around the bend & we really slammed some slabs in back of the shacks:)

MAUMEE RIVER RUN

The Maumee River is arguably the Buckeye State's top walleye fishery in March, thanks to the incredible migration that begins about a week after the Sandusky River runs. The Maumee River's walleyes are halted by a power dam in Grand Rapids.

However, the best fishing isn't found directly below the dam. Instead, anglers should focus on the section of river flowing between Interstate 475 and Interstate 80/90. The walleyes are attracted to this section because of its exceptional spawning habitat. The fishing should be great this month, most likely peaking during the first week of April.

Shore-anglers can get to this stretch by way of International Park off Cherry Street in Toledo. Upstream, the Side Cut Metropark off South River Road provides access.

Plan to bring plenty of twistertail grubs if you plan to fish here. Snags will claim a fair share of baits - but that's what it takes to catch fish here.

For more information regarding local access sites, contact the Toledo Metroparks office at (419) 893-9740. For more fishing information, contact the District Two office of the ODOW.
