View Full Version : New hunter
Hello,
I wanted to know if there are any resources in central Ohio for novice hunters with regard to whitetail deer hunting. I'm 40, and have no experience in the field with the exception of target shooting. I have completed my hunter education course but I'm leaning against going out on my own for the first time out. Not having much luck on the internet or through the ODNR. Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Russ

Welcome to the site Russ. This is an excellent resource for a novice hunter. I have taught all these guys a LOT. hee hee hee! Seriously, there are a lot of knowledgable hunters that utilize this site and you can learn a lot from these guys and the information shared in these threads. My best advice for the novice just starting out is to learn and develope your scent control program to the max! Once you start doing everything you can to eliminate as much as your scent as possible, then you will start seeing more and more deer when you go into the field. Good luck and be safe!

This is a good site to learn alot about deer hunting. I have been hunting since I was 12 {now 33 } and I learn something new on this site evey day. Take care and if you want someone to take you out all you have to do is ask and I'm sure someone or me would gladly take you out and start your addiction with deer hunting..................Rich

Welcome to the site and welcome to hunting !!!
Not only is this a realy good site to pick up pointers on hunting, but YOu should also grab some videos and or books/magazines that will help you get the ball rolling on your new found interest.
No matter how long you have been a hunter, you will always learn something new, such as teqniques and new found discoveries of deer behavior that will open up new ways to hunt them.
You will never know everything there is to know on hunting, there is always something new coming to surface.
Just learn as much as you can, you have to be a sponge and just soak up as much as possible, Even hanging out at the sports shop talking to other hunters can reveal new things to you.
Hunting can be frustrating at times and at other times it is more rewarding than anything I can think of.
Alot of new hunters tend to give up before they become skilled enough at it to be consistantly succesfull at it, just remember it is called hunting and that is what you will be doing, hunting does not mean killing, you will not be succesfull each and every time you go out into the field, just remember that before going in to the sport.
But, if you do your homework and practice at it, it will be the most rewarding times in your life.
I look at it as, harvesting an animal is only a small part of the hunt, the actuall experience of being out there in nature and seeing , hearing things that alot of people never get to experience is the best part, becoming part of the surroundings and just blending in, to the point that the animals are just going about their daily routines and have no idea you are there is Awesome.
Good luck in you future hunts and Enjoy it as much as you can.
And dont forget to Pass on the Heritage of hunting to a young person.
God bless

Welcome to the site, Russ! I am relatively new, too. Last year was my first season deer hunting. I am 31. I really envy these guys that started young. I think of all the years of joy I missed.
I can say that everyone at this site has been great! Everyone is really helpful and I still have yet to be flamed for asking a stupid question. Though, give it time, I come up with some really stupid ideas. I have learned a lot from reading other posts and asking questions.
I also agree with bowtech to pass on the Heritage. This is my second year and I am taking my daughter with me as an observer this year. She passed her hunter safety, but she isn't a shooter yet. We have been looking forward to next week for months.
Good luck and let us know how the hunt goes.
