Although I believe it is a very good idea, is a Hunter Education course required for children (under 16 years of age) of landowners?

Good question. The law book says that "all first time license buyers must successfully complete a hunter education course". The book also says that landowners and their children do not need to purchase a license. Of course I would call 1-800-Wildlife to make sure.

I don't believe a land owners children have to complete a hunters ed to hunt there property, since they do not have to buy any tags to hunt there property, but i believe it is a good thing that all hunters go thru just so they can learn the values of hunting and safety. If you have any dought call your local wildlife officer or the division headquarters and ask they will get the answer for you,But remember as a land owner hunting his or her own property small piece of land or a large piece and your deer that you shot runs of your property ,you MUST have all proper tags to go after that deer just a thought to keep in the back of your mind.Besides help out the division and donate some money to them by buying the proper tags you need to hunt in Ohio with.

I'm pretty sure they don't need it on thier own land. But once they go to hunt public or private land (other your own) they must complete the course before they can purchase a license.

As previously stated I recommend making the time for the course.

I have completed the hunter education instructor course and as I understand the regulations the answer to your question from a legal standpoint is land owners and their children are not required to take the hunter education course.

Is it a good idea to have your kids take the course? Absolutely!

My son and daughter took the course (before I became an instructor) even though we owned land on which they could hunt. There isn't any cost to take the course and it will allow your child or children to hunt other property in the future should you and/or they desire. It's also a good idea for adults to take the course if you plan to hunt out of state in your lifetime.....many states are starting to require non-resident hunters to complete a hunter safety course before granting a license and they accept Ohio's program. BTW-Ohio's program is considered the top hunter's education program in the nation and one most states have modeled for their own states.

I'm actually looking forward to taking the course with my son / daughter when the time comes.
My mom took the course with me 18yrs ago. I need to redeem myself because she beat me on the final test.

Could anyone suggests a good age to take kids to this course. I was thinking 6 to 8? I have already started with safety when my son goes with me now. I let him carry an unloaded BB gun and have found this to be a great way to safely start him to learn how to safely handle a gun. Plus this keeps his attention while rabbit hunting or just scouting.

I took the class when I was 9 and there were kids in my class that were a lot younger. I think it depends on the kid. Some kids can handle it at younger ages than others.

As I remember, I was told by a Hunter Education Instuctor Instructor (one who teaches the instructors), that the current book was written so that a 10 year old could read and understand.
