Waterfowl survey:

Waterfowl biologist Mark Witt and pilot Joe Barber toured the Lake Erie marsh region this week and found about 50,000 bluebills had settled in on Maumee Bay. About as many mallards were visiting Sandusky Bay and its marshes, as well as good numbers of black ducks, some gadwall and green-winged teal.

Surprising flocks of tundra swans have been moving through northern Ohio this week, as well as smaller flocks of sandhill cranes. A few rare whooping cranes were spotted at Killdeer Plains Wildlife Area west of Bucyrus.

Madewell speaks:

Lake Metroparks deputy director Steve Madewell knows how good the steelhead trout fishing is in northeastern Ohio. Madewell is featured on Wednesday at The Trout Club of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History dinner and his talk is entitled "Lake Erie Steelhead Fishing: The Future's So Bright That I Have to Wear Shades."

Call Karen Menn for tickets, 216-231-4600 (Ext. 3278).
