View Full Version : Desperation
Okay guys, bout a month into the season, and I have an interesting question. 2 days ago I missed a 140 class buck, and I found myself wondering if I would ever get another chance like that this season. After the miss I have found myself subconsciously lowering my buck standards.
At what time in the season do you find yourself ............
1. Holding out for a big buck
2. Shooting a smaller buck, or atleast lowering your standards
3. Shoothing or wanting to shoot anything that moves just to get on the board???????????

I did exactly the same thing last year. After blowing an EASY opportunity at a 140" eight pointer, I took the first mature deer that came by. Ended up being the same deer I passed 15 minutes before the 8 pointer came along, just two days later. My self confidence was as low as it could go and I needed to prove to myself I could still do it. I knew I could kill a 140 class deer if I just waited, but at that time I didn't care. I'm still glad I did, but later in the season while I was letting P&Y bucks walk, it didn't seem like the right choice.:D

from the beginning of the season I try and go for a buck bigger then my biggest ever shot (which now is a 7 pointer). I wont take a doe till after the rut. Once rut is over all I look for is meat for the freezer. I always wish for a Huge buck But if I come across a 8 point or better I will shoot it... Once I get a 8 pointer then I wont shoot anything smaller then that...

Right now I'm looking to fill the freezer. That's why I'm using my 12 ga tomorrow morning.
I've had the luxury of not having to be picky though. Just about every state I've lived in has let you take multiple bucks and deer so it's never really been an issue.
The only exception would have been during my 2002 hunt when I killed this eight point.

That morning I missed a doe and a much bigger buck with a narly rack. That afternoon I had a P&Y class buck stand just outta bow range for about an hour watching a doe that was under my stand. After he walked off this lil guy shows up and I couldn't take it so I hammered him.
At first I was pretty PO'd at myself because I wanted to hold out for a biggen, but now that I look back I'm glad I shot him because the rest of the week I never had another good buck come with'n bow range.
