I read an aricle in a magazine talking about the same thing your asking.
Can not remember which magazine it was, but they said the 20 Ga. is a good gun at close to moderate ranges, but do not recomend it for longer shots.

Something about the energy loss due to less foot lbs at the muzzle , hard to remember.

But if I remember right, they said the 20 gA. is an effective slug gun out to about 80-90 yards anything over that it is pushing it a tad.

Anything over 125 was really pushing it.

But most of the deer here in Ohio are killed at around those Shorter distances so I would think It would probably be okay to use one.

I just wouldnt set on a 300 yard wide powerline clearing with it.

I use a Remington Wingmaster 20 ga. pump. I've had it since I was 12 (10 yrs). It's deadly. I've dropped plenty of deer in their tracks. The longest shot I've ever taken on a deer was probably just over 60 yards. Where I hunt it would be very hard to get an open shot much further. You are in good shape.

Perfect gun for out to 85 yards - anything further would be "guessing". 100+ yards can be done, just probably shouldn't.

I've killed several deer with a 20 ga.

The partition gold slugs are deadly. I shoot them out of my 12ga 870 wingmaster and I have yet to have a deer run off when hit with them. As long as you keep that slug in the front portion of the body they are down for the count.
