View Full Version : Friend Stink scares deer away

I was hunting with a good friend of mine in the Medina area over the weekend and here are the facts. The wind was blowing what felt like 100 mile/hr. yet where we are stll hunting. My buddy has done a good job planting food plots and providing deer the valuable nutrition needed to support the large racks. There are plenty of large bucks in the area, but with the conditions over the weekend, they definitely were not moving.

The doe however seem oblivious to the windy conditions and wanted to get to the food plot. Both my buddy and I were hunting in identical 16 foot ladder stands and when the doe came in down wind of me, they seemed a little nervous but still proceeded directly to the food plot. However, when they were within 100 yards of my buddy they took off like they had just been shot. I thought something else other than my buddy's scent must have scared them until this same thing happened on three other occasions.

After the hunt (might as well call it spooking deer instead of hunting), I confronted my buddy about his scent only to find out he had been hunting directly after work and the hair spray (that's right I said hair spray) odor was all through his hat, especially with the wet conditions. The smell was so bad in the vehicle we had to get rid of the hat completely.

What would you tell your friend about wearing hair spray out in the field. I should also mention that it is his land we were hunting. So please anyone reading this, please give him a hard time and more importantly useful advice on scent control.

Thats quite a situation there. I understand you don't want to offend the person who's land you hunt on. I would just make suttle comments about how you can smell him, so the deer are definitely going to smell him. I'm surprised he would go through all the work of having food plots and not understand the importance of scent control. That really makes me wonder. If you keep telling him about his stink, and he keeps getting busted by deer than eventually he will change. Unless he likes not getting deer. Good luck!!!

Go to Walmart and buy him a bottle of the green hunters specialty soap and some of their non-scented deoderant.

Put it in a box and give it to him as a gift.

That is exactly why I do not take any of my friends into my honey holes. I just do not trust other people to be as nuts about scent control as I am.

See this is what you get when you take a good friend out hunting and he tells all your hunting secrets!! Let’s get a couple of thing straight; first of all, have any of you tried utilizing Hair Spray to attract deer?? It is an old Indian trick, I have kill 50-250 190 class bucks utilizing hair spray, but I’m not one to boost of my success.

Second of all I have spend two months getting my food plot together and getting pictures of seven bucks coming to this plot (1 – 10 point, 2 – 8 points) My Friend from Pittsburgh and I did say Pittsburgh, well he has never shot a buck bigger than a six (6) point and been asking me to take him hunting.

Do you think that the hair spray trick was planned???

All I can say is that the 10 point and the two 8 points are still returning to the food plot and my buddy from Pittsburgh still only has a six point to talk about!!!

Indians using hairspray as an old trick? 50-250 190 class bucks? Slight bit of variation, ur positive u've shot atleast 50 but not more than 250 bucks.

Dude Two bits of advice: 1.Dont use hairspray if u plan to go hunting later that day.
2. After u've fought off the temptation to use it before hunting, but still have that desire to have some extra volume without compromising hold. Spray your hair in a well ventilated area, for those vapors have made u crazy.

I think I heard about the "Hairspray Hunter" from Medina. I'm told he's 0 for 20 years of hunting (that will come as no surprise to those of us who consider scent control when taking to the field!). I'm also told that he put tassles and pinwheels on his cams and that he's only capable of pulling 20 lbs. draw weight! Word of advice Ohio Bowhunters, If you see this 'man' prancing through the woods with his pink bow and ballet slippers, RUN!

elkhunter
10-20-2004, 10:46 AM
Ok, maybe not 50 to 250, maybe it was 450 to 800 - 190 class bucks????? After seeing what hair spray did to your hair, I'm switching to Gel or Mousse!

I just spoke with elkhunter (stinky) and he informed me his new ladder stand position is in the middle of poison ivy vines. The reason he knows they are poison ivy vines is he just returned from the physician in an effort to relieve the swelling and itching from the rash.

The question I have is how do you get poison ivy on all parts of your body even though you are fully clothed? I think he is doing more playing with himself and putting on hair spray than actual hunting. I can say this now because I believe my hunting privledges are being revoked.

Well elkhunter, I bet you keep your hands out of your pants in the future when you have an encounter with poison ivy.

countyroad320
10-20-2004, 02:24 PM
It all depends on how sensitive you are to poison ivy. I know of a kid that got it really bad on a boy scout campout. He hunt his towel up to dry near the campfire and they burned logs with poison ivy on them. The smoke from the fire was blowing toward his towel. Well later on when he went to dry off with his towel it transmitted the poison ivy to him. He had to go to the doctor because his testicals swelled up so bad. Thats how he got the nickname "Balls".

After reading the post about spooking deer due to "buddy" wearing hairspray, I knew exactly who these two bozos were! I am willing to bet that they were not hunting out of identical tree stands, but were both in the SAME tree stand. Either they were in a "buddy" stand or sitting on each others lap! I know they are going to ask me to go sit in a small ice fishing shanty, and frankly I am scared to do it. If you have read this story you'll notice that they were "hunting" next to a food plot, or in simple terms BAIT! Neither one of these guys would know what to do if you dropped them off and said hunt, I'll be back to get you in eight hours. Their idea of hunting is... plant bait, (not too far of a walk from your truck) go out for two hours, and go back at 330PM. Elkhunter got his name because he went to Colorado, his friend shoots an elk, and the thing falls down near death 50 feet from his stand. He shoots it once, puts a tag on it and returns home to talk about how hard the hunt was physically. Stinger on the other hand has never done anything. Sure he talks a big game, insults his friends, and talks down their accomplishments, but he has never accomplished anything worth talking about. Stinger does have one characteristic, he has more EXCUSES than anyone I have ever met. I could go on all day, so if anyone wants any additional info on these two just ask.

Sounds to me like the reply from Beaverstalker ring of jealousy. Maybe we should talk about the facts. If Beaverstalker is who I think he is, he hunts with a pistol that he cannot hit the broad side of a barn with. I'll admit I hunted with him once and he wounded two deer in the same day (from his description, both hits were in the hind quarters) and one was a large buck I had spent the entire summer and fall scouting (neither deer was recovered). When inquiring about more details of the shots, Beaverstalker said he was walking through a thicket and jumped the deer. He said it was very thick and he did not have time to aim, but he still emptied the pistol twice on deer running full speed through the brush. I have hunted at every opportunity for the past 27 years, and the things I saw that day went against all of the hunting ethics I have aquired.
Needless to say, after this happened we had a major confrontation and Beaverstalker ended up lying on the ground with a broken nose. I am not proud of that moment, but that is the last time Beaverstalker had permission to hunt on the property and he has yet to kill a deer, but continues to use that pistol he pulls out of the closet for one week a year. Beaverstalker if you want me to explain the reasoning for food plots, please give me a call and I can explain deer management in the area you used to be able to hunt.

Please grow up Beaverstalker and only tell the facts.

Hey Bow Master/Cornholer

Care to update us on your early season 14 point wounded buck story? It was great job of early season scouting, stand placement & utilization of the trail camera to pattern him. Now, if you could only pull more than 40 lbs. and make a good shot at 12 yards, you could complete your journey for a 170 class buck and have him hanging on your wall instead of rotting in a brush pile.

If your calling that 140 class, I think you forgot to convert from centimeters to inches.

As for helping drag the deer out of the woods, I figured if you can't pull more than 40 lbs., there is no way you are going to drag a 105 lbs. deer out of the woods.
