I'm a bowfishing nut. I just love to bowfish carp, gar, suckers. If some one wants to go out with me just drop me a line. It would be great for a forum to start about bowfishing, along with carp angling. ;)

Sounds great i have been wanting to get into some 30's my self ,Just get some directions and maybe some saturday or sunday when it gets warm and the spawn hits we all can head up that way to see what we can get into.I hang out at Indian lake and the miami river alot of fish but mainly in the 10 to 15lbs range need some big one also would like to get into some gar you know of any good holes for gar?
Še§perado™
01-05-2003, 06:24 PM
I found a few good places for gar. I only bowfished up at Indian once. Got lost back in the catacomb and was lost for a few hours. I'll come up that way and you can show me around the lake. Do you have a boat?
Caribou Dreamer2
01-05-2003, 06:37 PM
Yes 14 ft alum boat rigged and ready to rock,We built two platforms on the front and rear to make it easy to stand and shoot off,We named her the carp buster. We do all of our shooting during the day light hours so no lights on the boat.Have not tried any night shooting yet but people say thats the best time. Will work on lights this spring and maybe try some night shooting.I know what you mean about the area you are talking about it can get confusing if your not used to it.

I have a 16 ft Lowe Jon Boat. I have a trolling motor on the front and bowfish by myself most of the time. I have the deck that was on it, also a floor put in it the full length of the boat from the factory. The name of my boat is Mud Shark. I can give you my number if you want to call and we can stay in touch before season. Or even get together and work on the boats and talk bowfishing.

Hey Clarence, this is Brent. I shot at the Buckeye classic last year. I don't remember if I met you or not. Anyways, if you (or Caribou) want to shoot the bay, give me a holler.
I sold my bowfishing rig last summer, but before I did I spent a lot of hours exploring the bay. There are some monsters in there, that's for sure. It's a big place and can take a few trips to find out what's what-so if you make it up this way let me know. I'd be glad to show ya some good back bays.

I like to bowfish a lot too. Buckeye lake is good in central OH. I usually go to Hoover or Alum since they are close to home. I usually go to a tournament in Michigan every year at Saginaw Bay. That place will spoil you. You can easily shoot between 1500 and 2000 lbs. of carp on a good weekend there (2 man team) It usually takes between 2000 and 4000 lbs to win the tournament though.

The tournament is always the weekend after Memorial Day. It is in Caseville MI. Our best year we shot 1714 lbs. came in 19th place. Also placed 11th one year with around 1250 lbs. We don't use a boat we just wade. If you go you will be shooting against pro teams like Team Muzzy and Bear and the likes. The pro teams have air boats. It's lots of fun First place pays $700.00. They pat to the top 20 places. 250 teams participate.

Your right Arrow1. When I had the Buckeye Classic Tournament here in Ohio. The Sportsman Class World Champions were in it. That was Tracy Harper and Mark Whitacre. Also Don Paisly the record holder in Ohio for the Buffalo sucker. They are really good friends of mine. I'm going to be looking for a partner this year. Maybe sponser some more touraments this year. I want to start up the a bowfishing club here in Ohio. The states around us have one and Ohio doesn't. I want to set up tournaments with our neighboring states. Uh-oh! 17 lbs? I gotta get you guys out on the bay. There really is no place like Erie to shoot big carp. I'm not braggin when I tell you this, but EVERY time I went out last year, I shot MANY fish over 20lbs. Most were between 25-28 lbs. It was gettin to the point where I was like-"well, it doesn't look like it's over 25, so I'll let it swim! I usually don't shoot every fish I see when I'm out by myself, just the bigger ones. It can and will spoil you. I was used to shootin the Maumee-it has some big carp too, but not like Erie.
Hey, if ya need a partner for the Buckeye classic, I'd like to go if ya haven't got anyone else in mind. I was gonna ask Jake, but I figure he's probably takin Jess. I'll send ya my # and we can talk it over if ya want.
It's great to be able to talk with some other guys from the state who bowfish. O yeah, thanx Steve for the sub-forum.
man dont bring me down there LOOKMA NOHANDS i thought that was pretty big for this area.now i feel like it was not that big after all with what youre sayin about the ones in the tournament.oh well it was still fun though.

Sorry-I didn't mean for it to sound that way. It was simply my way of extending an invite to come up and shoot some pigs in my neck of the woods. I'd like to see everyone that bowfishes shoot big fish.
I realize that other parts of the state doesn't grow 'em as big as up here. Nothing wrong with that. I wouldn't be ashamed of shooting a 17 lb'er. That's still a good fish.
If ya want, I'll give up a location or two on the Maumee where you can probably get a new personal best. There are some 20+lb'ers in there too. Like you said-it doesn't matter how big they are as long as you have fun!!!!

Hey all, heard thru the grapevine that there is some bowfishin talk happenin so I figured I'd jump in. I've shot a fish or two and can vouch for Lake Erie... If you hit it right you can fill a 55 gal. drum in 20 minutes with fish from the upper teens to mid 20's. I shoot throughout the State from the Ohio up to Erie...even ventured cross the line into canada before......My motto is Have Boat...will travel....my only problem is that I usually can't hit a fish unless its stuck in a barrel or if someone else shoots it first and lets me reel it in...lol.....I'd like to hook up with some of you Indian lake Locals sometime...I made one trip up there last yr but caught a cold front and didn't do good...Plus my wife Jess was shootin em all before i could even get drawn...If anyone wants to get together and go sometime just let me know....

Desperado,
Don Paisley is a very good friend of mine. I was just at his place a few days ago. I don't know if he told you that he took that state record away from one his buddies or not. I was the buddy that he took the record away from. The Ohio state record buffalo sucker had been long standing before I broke it. I had it less than 24 hours and Don, set a new record which still stands today. Thats OK though. I can't think of a better guy than him to break my record. BTW, I am the current Ohio state record holder for for the biggest fish in the "sucker, all other catagory".
Desparado, you sound like you know about the "Great Lakes Bowfishing Chamionship" up at Saginaw. Have you been there? I'v been going for about the last 10-12 years. I did not make it last year though because my partner had shoulder surgery.
LookMa-NoHands!
01-06-2003, 08:07 PM
Hey! So your the one who stole MY record sucker!! HaHa!! This is too funny. I broke the old record, 4 lbs, 14oz I think, from the Kokosing river. I shot a 6.36 from the Maumee, and a few weeks later you shot your 7.36. How weird is that?
So I know how ya feel about having a record not standing long. We'll have to get together somethime and shoot some fish. Talk about a small world!
LookMa-NoHands!
01-06-2003, 08:10 PM
Oh yeah, it seems like we should try to possibly set something up to go shoot Caseville on Saginaw Bay. That sounds like a good time-plus it seems there's a TON of experience between the guys I've seen so far on this site.
The Ohio boys sweep Caseville........how cool would that be?
Arrow 1
01-06-2003, 08:21 PM
Casville is a blast, but if you are hoping to place in the top 20, it is pretty tough. All of the pro teams with the sponsors show up for this one. People from all over the US are there. Me and my partner have done better wading than most of the guys with the air boats. It has it's share of cheaters too. When you have a $700.00 pay out for 1st place, the riff raff come out of the woodwork.
Arrow 1
01-06-2003, 08:31 PM
LookMaNoHands, So you are the one! The only thing that the ODNR told me about that whole situation was that some young boy had just broken the record before I broke it again. I felt kind of bad taking it away from a kid. At the time I was getting it officially varified I knew nothing about your record! But yeah, I do know how you feel.
It seems like a small group of us here do know of one another or have a friend in commom. How weird is that.
LookMaNoHands, If you don't mind me asking, just how old were you when you shot that fish?
My fish was a Golden Red Horse. What species was yours.
LookMa-NoHands!
01-06-2003, 09:08 PM
Don't feel bad. I was actually 22 yrs old then, I think. Not really a kid-maybe it was because I look really young for my age.
Don't feel too bad though. Last year was a bad year for shooting in the river, but the year before that I shot 3 suckers that were within one and a half onces of your fish. And I caught one on rod and reel that weighed in at 9lbs. even. All within a one week period. Maybe if I hadn't blown a big chunk off the one's butt.......lol.
My fish was a Golden Redhorse also. I think they get the biggest. I only shot one time in the Big Walnut-I didn't see too many fish there. You must have a honey hole-I was surprised when I saw my record was beat from there. But I guess the big fish are wherever ya find 'em!

I'm surprised there are that many big suckers down there. But as for getting back the record, I'm not gonna hold my breath. Big suckers are kinds hard to shoot-at least up in the Maumee they are. They usually stay deep, come up to a shallow spot just for a second to spawn, then they're gone. Plus the time and water has to be just right. But I'll keep tryin!
Of course, I'm not gonna celebrate until I see my name in print this time! LOL! Good luck to ya!

Jake, I'm looking into lights for the boat as we speak. Might go with 4 on the front and get a generator to put in the boat and take it out during the day.

Desperado-----Thanks for the info. I was'nt sure but I thought it was in the 30's for carp. My son shot a big grass carp in a creek last year that empties into the Ohio River. Well, to make a long story short , he pitched it not realizing the white amur would qualify. About a week later he notified the local warden who told him a carp was a carp and it did'nt matter on the species. In a flash he went back to the area only to find what the coons had left him. Not a pretty sight when your staring at a state record! I felt bad for him, but know he may get another chance oneday. The biggin weighed 49# and was 43" I believe! Bummer, huh?:( TF

Turkeyfoot, No ,I really don't consider myself a carpmaster. I really love to bowfish and have been doing it for a lot of years. I have had more than my share of luck. Thats what a lot of it has been, pure luck.
That is too bad about that grass carp. I think other bowfishing records have been broken but the shooter just does not realize what he has so it never gets officially recorded.
Desperado, We should drag paisley out with us when we go. Since he is retired he looks for stuff to do. As far as that bowfishing club idea, what did you have in mind? How would it work? What would the club do?

As far as the club goes . I'm talking to Sully and talking to other clubs and seeing how they got going. I need some people to step up that are serious about this to help me get this off the ground. Just so you can sleep tonight, turkeyfoot, grass carp are NOT recognized as 'carp' by the Outdoor Writers of Ohio. They are the ones who keep the official state records.
I thought the same thing, as I know of a pond that has some monster grassies in it, so I sent an e-mail to the president. He replied they don't count as carp, they don't have their own catagory, and one wasn't planned for them. I also asked why sheepshead didn't have their own bowfishing catagory, and he replied 'I was the first to ever suggest it'. Maybe if enough of us wanted these fish included, we could make it happen? Never know.
