I think I am reading this correctly, ALL sucessfull deer hunters have to complete this survey. Anyone else hear about this?

Hunters to Expect Changes in
Deer Harvest Recording Procedure
In an effort to more effectively manage Ohio's deer population, the Division of Wildlife has implemented a new scanning process for deer harvest record forms. All successful deer hunters are required to complete a harvest record form, which is available at registered deer check stations. Throughout the hunting season, the forms will be collected and electronically scanned by Division researchers, a process that is expected to reduce the time required to capture data from several weeks to a few days.

For this program to be effective, however, hunters will need to do their part by clearly printing letters and numbers on the form, particularly entries for name, address, and date of birth. A little care in filling out the form will go a long way in helping to improve the quality of information used to make decisions about deer hunting regulations.

WHAT CAN I DO?
Print neatly inside the BLOCKS
Completely darken the appropriate circles
Provide ALL required information
WHY DOES THIS MATTER?

Deer management requires good information about the harvest
Neat and accurate data allow us to process harvest information more efficiently
Your license and permit fees are used more efficiently-it saves money!

This process will help us determine who are the successful hunters and provide information on hunter distribution and hunter pressure across Ohio . We use this information to develop hunting regulations, like bag limits and deer zone boundaries, and to identify and prioritize areas for purchasing future public lands for hunting.

WHY DO YOU NEED THIS DETAILED INFORMATION?

The Date of Birth and Driver’s License or State ID Number are needed to uniquely identify individual hunters. Remember, Ohio has more than 11 million residents, so there are many "John and Jane Does” across the state.

Date of Harvest – This tells us when hunting pressure is greatest and how the deer harvest is distributed throughout the season.

County of Harvest – Ohio’s deer management occurs at the county level, so we need to know how many deer are harvested in each county. This allows us to set future regulations and keep the herd close to a desired population size, one that minimizes deer vehicle accidents and crop damage, yet still provides wildlife viewing and many hunting opportunities.

Biology – Deer management requires data on the harvest of bucks, does, and yearlings to maintain a high quality deer herd. (This section is completed by the check station operator.)

I think its a GREAT idea!! A clear and acurate picture of the deer harvest is critical to proper management. Another good job by the ODNR!!!
