Thursday, September 23, 2004
Sportsmen around Ohio will celebrate the 33rd annual National Hunting and Fishing Day on Saturday and a local sportsman's club is swinging open its doors to show off the outdoor sports.
The Weslaco Sportsmen's Club in Hambden Township has a free youth event that includes fishing, archery, air rifles and trapshooting. The 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. event is for ages 8 to 16 years and lunch is included. Early registration is needed. Call Mike Schaffer, 440-974-1692.
Wallace Lake in the Cleveland Metroparks' Mill Stream Run Reservation in Berea has a youth fishing derby on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. followed by a casting derby. The Leetonia Sportsmen's Club in Columbiana County already has a full roster for its youth event on Saturday.
The Ohio Division of Wildlife's big NHF Day event is a free Family and Youth Sportsman Day at Big Island Wildlife Area in Marion County on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be hunter education, hunting dog demonstrations, trap shooting, archery, and bow hunting activities for youth and women. A Hunter Education Home Study Completion session will be at 8 a.m. and shooting and field trial events will begin at noon.
Benefit hunt, shoot:
A pheasant hunt and sporting clays shoot to benefit the U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance is being held Saturday by Toledo's Southside Sportsmen's Club at Blue Spruce Game Birds in Bryan, Ohio. The pheasant hunts are from 9 a.m. to noon at the northwest Ohio hunting preserve with a 50-target sporting clays shoot from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cost for both and lunch is $60. To register, call Ohio Field Director Don Smith, 614-266-7304.
Hawg Fest in Huron:
The Huron Hawg Fest Open Walleye Tournament brightens the fall fishing scene Saturday with anglers arriving from around the country to compete. Hosted by the Western Basin Sportsmen's Association and Ohio Game Fishing, the weather and fishing forecasts are prime for the fall event. Teams can enter Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 5:30 a.m. to 7 a.m. at the Huron Boat Basin where the weigh-in begins at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, followed by a 5:30 p.m. awards ceremony and pig roast at the Plantation Hotel.
Perch winners:
Curt Sebulsky of Bedford gave veteran fishing guide Ron Johnson of Mentor a head start in the recent Perch Fest Derby and managed to edge him by only a little more than an inch for the coveted Lake County perch fishing crown. Sebulsky scouted the Lake Erie shoreline the week before the tournament but only fished on Sunday in the two-day event. His best five perch measured an impressive 65.4 inches, an average of 13 inches per fish, winning $1,000. Buoying his catch were a pair of trophy 14-inch perch.
Johnson took second place and $750 with 64 inches, followed by Jim Toth (63.5 inches, $500) of Twinsburg and Tom Blasko (63.3 inches) of Geneva. The youth division winners checked in three perch to win Gander Mountain gift certificates. They were Sam Cicconetti (38.7 inches) of Painesville, Jeremy Schneider (37.6 inches) of Madison and Lucas Laurenty (36 inches) of Austinburg.
