With the new steelhead season quickly approaching I thought I'd start a thread featuring steelhead flies that are solid producers to get everyone going on the upcoming season. :)

Do you have success with your purple skunk? I like to tie wet/spey style flies, but i never caught a steelhead on one yet. I just stick with egg or nymph patterns.

Personally? Not alot, I have buddies that do well with skunks. Then again I haven't done well with everyone's old standby wooly buggers on steelhead either! lol I've got some goals to catch fish on some of the other flies that are popular with the masses. I'm mostly fish nymphs and sucker spawn/crystal meth type flies.

i have set goals to get a fish to hit a wet or a dry fly before. never caught a fish yet. i had one steelhead turn its head and follow a dry fly once, but no hit. the only luck i had with a bugger is one that is a egg-sucking leech.
What type of hair is that on the purple skunk?

The wing and tail are gray squirrel. Catdaddy got me a nice bunch of tails last fall. :)

I've got a buddy that fishes buggers almost exclusively, go figure... Yeah dries are another goal but much loftier. I tied myself up some good steelhead skater type flies last spring with hopes of getting something to turn on a day with low clear water and I ended up fishing in 20 mph winds, need I say more?

Cool flies and they look easy enough for me to tie.

Thanks Steve! I'll be posting more weekly as the season rolls along.

ESL, stonefly nymphs(small) and sucker spawn produce most fish for me. I am not sure if steelhead will bite a dry fly as you need to fish close to bottom for these.
great patterns lance. thanks for sharing.

Thanks!
Good to see you stoppin back again! Hadn't seen anything of you since you were heading to PA to fish. The dries are a spring time goal. Better odds then. ;)
