Mosquito Reservoir tourney features fishing seminars
Sunday, July 04, 2004
The Gander Mountain Walleye Cup circuit is holding its Ohio State Championship on Saturday and next Sunday at Mosquito Reservoir with weigh-ins at 3 p.m. at the Mosquito Causeway boat ramp.
The field is competing for a $2,500 top prize and slots in the GMWC national championship this fall at Minnesota's Lake of the Woods. A Gander Get-Together featuring fishing seminars by Bernie Barringer is Saturday at the Gander Mountain store in Warren at 6:30 p.m. Barringer hosts the Walleye Wisdom television show, which is filming the tournament.
Summertime walleye:
Biff Lloyd is holding his 18th annual Fishing Tournament at Mel's Crow's Nest in Marblehead again on July 11. The Lake Erie benefit event for drift-and-cast anglers supports local police and fire departments. Entry includes a steak dinner at Mel's Crow's Nest. Call Lloyd, 419-732-6761.
This year's event will remember popular restaurateur Mel Rose, who died last summer. Last year's tournament had 60 teams and 386 anglers competing.
PWT, BASS team up:
The Bass Anglers Sportsman Society (BASS) and the In-Fisherman Professional Walleye Trail (PWT) are teaming to present the Freshwater Doubles event at the ESPN Great Outdoor Games from Thursday to Sunday in Madison, Wis. The Great Outdoor Games offered bass competitions in the past but this summer bass and walleye pro anglers will be teamed to compete for medals and cash for the heaviest three bass and three walleyes.
The PWT circuit will move to Cleveland on July 21-23, the first national fishing championship in Cleveland. Weigh-ins will be each day at Voinovich Park on the Cleveland Lakefront starting at 3 p.m.
Michigan's Kevin VanDam (OK)-RD%> won the Bassmaster Elite 50 crown this year and leads a field of 52 in the 2004 Bassmasters Classic on July 30 to Aug. 1 at Lake Wylie in Charlotte, N.C. The 2005 Bassmaster Classic will be July 29-31 in Pittsburgh. Pennsylvania ranks fifth in the country for BASS membership with 22,688 members.
Out and about:
Lake levels at Highlandtown Lake in Columbiana County are going down to allow improvements to be made to the dam and emergency spillway. . . . Greg Rustemeyer of Gahanna has been elected to Safari Club International's 300-person board of directors. . . . Catching too many walleyes cost Kingsville, Ontario, commercial fisherman Christopher Murray $3,000 and boat owner D.W. Murray Fisheries Ltd. another $5,500 after bringing in 1,150 pounds of walleye over their limit. The company also paid $12,147 in restitution.
Mount Vernon deer hunt:
City council members in Mount Vernon, northeast of Columbus, will allow bowhunters to help them solve the problem of too many white-tailed deer roaming the city. Council voted 5-2 to adopt Councilman Burt Hanson's ordinance opening certain areas of the city to bowhunting with permits from the Ohio Division of Wildlife. Landowners could allow sportsmen to hunt deer on their property.
Shiny spoons:
The July issue of Boating magazine has a strange way to make spoons and spinners sparkle. Tabasco sauce. Dip them in Tabasco sauce and let sit for five minutes, then wipe off the sauce. The metal should sparkle.
The article also recommends using boat wax to rejuvenate crankbaits, or diving plugs, and make them shiny and bright.
Eagles abound:
Ohio set a modern-day eagle record again this year. Wildlife officers counted 108 eagles nests in Ohio, including 21 new nests in 15 counties, the 16th consecutive year the number of eagle nests has increased. Nest success was reported in 73 of the nests and 127 young eagles have been fledged this year.
Pennsylvania reported its bald eagle nests have increased from two in the Pymatuning region along the Ohio border 30 years ago to 75 around the Keystone State this year. Bald eagles were upgraded from an endangered to a threatened species in 1995 because of nesting success around the country.
