I thought I would start this poll since there was one on smoking while deer hunting..I have always dipped Copenhagen while deer hunting...I am not a pro by no means but I have shot quite a few Ohio deer, most have been while dipping...Do you think it hurts?

I can honestly say that at least 90% of the time that I am hunting, I have a chew of Copenhagen in my mouth.

Never spooked a deer that I know of (from the chew), but I could have been winded and not know it, but I probably smell a lot worse than the chew (and it smells pretty bad).

I never have. I just figure why go to such extremes to keep your scent down with Scent Lok, scent-a-way spray, coon urine and the like. After being completely scent free and then have a big chew in just never made to much sense to me. I always put a big one in after the hunt though.

I dont chew on stand, Like Q2, I sure do enjoy a chew on the walk out, or just after I harvested a deer sitting in my stand waiting to go recover it. Just remember, Its not just the deer that you have observed that you could of spooked, but how many of the deer that you ddint see didnt come in because of it? If its only 1 deer, its one deer too many!! Pike

Depends on the mood,i use to all the time but talked to a hunting buddy about it and he convinced me not to on stand ,but on the way out(always) or over my dead deer i will put in a big fat one.The only time i will a have a big one in on stand now is if i'm gun hunting or if some jacka comes walking bye all the time and blows your setup then its time for a big one.I have shot deer with a dip in and without a dip in.

I don't smoke or dip, but to each his own I guess.:)

The best answer I have seen:
Its not just the deer that you have observed that you could of spooked, but how many of the deer that you ddint see didnt come in because of it? If its only 1 deer, its one deer too many!!
I always ask my clients if they smoke or chew. I hear the same old answer many times from the ones that do " I see deer all the time and they are never spooked" I always ask how much they spend on gear every year and how much time do they practice... After hearing their answers I simply state that why would they invest all that money and time then take a chance on spooking an alpha buck, once in a lifetime, by thinking wrongly as they do...
I quit smoking at the bell for 2003 and even though I smoked (wish me luck on quiting) I never ever did in my hunting clothes, going to or from my stand or especially in it... Again do you guys that do really think your not spooking any deer? Sometimes the wind will be in your favor and you'll see a nice deer now and then but why take the chance? Younger deer you may see but mature deer will be far and few between;)

I dont pay any attention to scent what so ever, dont try to mask it or cover it up..So I guess that is why I will chew while hunting.

I smoke cigars & dip. I don't do it in the woods. When I work I dip Smoke other times. The deer can smell the smoke or hear me spit. So no I don't.

THANKS Še§perado™
I am going thru DT's as I type LOL
It is not as bad as I thought by being 45 and having smoked for 28-30 years... Had a complete physical back in Nov and X-rays showed no damage to the lungs (X-rays are not all that great for detection but...) so I said it was time to give quitting my best effort... Any support from any source is greatly appreciated :D
I am at that point where I could kid myself into having just one smoke LOL I promise not to give in

I dip copenhagen while hunting and I usually get a deer. So I dont think it hurts any at all.

I dipped copenhagen for almost ten years. I've been "clean" since January of 1998. I've done alot of challeging things in my life, but quiting dipping is still the most difficult.

I used to carry a 16oz plastic soda bottle and spit in it. I don't think deer care about dip spit or it's smell though. Dipping did cost me a 25 yard broad side shoot at a 140 class buck once.

As I drew back my spit bottle fell out of my jacket, hit my treestand, and then hit the ground. :( That buck was later gut shot by a shot gun hunter. :( He had a very distinct rack...

You know I was amazed at how much money I saved when I quit dipping.

I always had gas in my truck or a few cent's to buy a soda. I used to dip two to three cans a week. I was so additiced that from the time I woke up to the time I went to sleep I always had a dip in.

Kodiac, Skoal, and all the othe sissy brands didn't have anything on Copenhagen... It's amazing what the nicotine addiction will do to ya. I remember buying copenhagen in the middle east. Man..... that was some nasty stuff.... It was full of fermaldihide and really hurt your gums, but you dipped it anyway....

To this day I still find myself craving a dip. Shoot, I want one right now....

I used to dip a can and a half of cope a day but quite 4 yrs ago...Quiting that stuff was the hardest thing I've even done and as TF said...i still find myself craving one now and then..
I used to kill deer with a dip in...heck, I've even had does under my stand licking the ground where I'd been spitting...
My take on it is if you just wanna go out and shoot any deer having a dip isn't gonna matter....But if your after a better than average deer then those are the ones that have been around long enough to be wary of unfamiler smells...

CatDaddy
07-18-2003, 01:06 AM
I always take a empty water bottle w/ me so that im not spitting on the ground. But you gotta love that copenhagen! I do need to cut back on it though...Im only 19 and chew a can a day.

I just put a big ol fat dip of Cope in before I got on here. I always hunt with some kinda backer in my mouth. Cope, Garret, Mail Pouch, Red Man...whatever. I had a Garret in one time and was a spittin all the way to the stand. A doe came in and winded the scent and actually jumped a fence and came right under my stand on that scent trail. I think she liked the sweet smell.

COPENHAGEN! If some hunters bad breath isn't spookin deer, then what is copenhagen going to do? I honestly think that scent cover is over rated, but thats just my opinion. And everyone knows what they say @ opinions... opinions are like butts, everybodys got one and most of them stink.:)

Actually one of my dogs treed on a couple of hens last fall! Using his eyes, saw some meat in a tree. The turkeys looked baffled when I walked in on them. I guess they were just freaked out with the dog barking and slobbering on their tree.

WCTHers don't do alot of things! I use to think along those lines & hated deer hunting. This year I said the heck w/ it all & I got the biggest buck of my life & my first bow kill. Did I have a chew in? Yes, until I started my stalk. Then again I didn't have my fannypack, sling, bino's, quiver, or hat on when I made the shot. I crawled 35yds on my belly to get w/in 20yds to shoot him lying in his bed. What a rush! :D Now that's hunting:p
I bet WCTHers don't do that either!

Since you stalked you used the wind to your advantage that cannot be lumped into the use of tobacco products AGREED?
I also never said you cannot take a trophy class animal while using a tobacco product but your odds are overwelmingly in your favor when you do not...
If you choose to spend good $$ on guns & bows and good $$ on clothes & gear and spend quality time in the pursuit of trophy animals why would you risk it all for a smoke or a chew?
Kind of like doing everything right before a date but not bathing it may work out for you and may not but risk it? I'd dare say not ;)

Hey atrkyhntr, I didn't think it was childish I thought it was a sense of humor and kind of slamming myself not anyone else. As for world class hunters, they are not hunting on the family farm in Wayne Co., Ohio either. If I paid the money they do to travel and hunt the places they do I am sure I could have more sucess also. My father gets a deer every year ( and some darn nice ones too) and he showers every morning and puts on his Auqa Velva and hearing aids before he goes out. I say use your natural instincts, skills etc. instead of spending 100's of dollars at Cabela's to improve your chances.

Back when I use to do that stuff I would swear that every time I put a wad of chew in I would start to see deer. It got to be so often I use to go without for a long time and then put some in and sure enough DEER. I never did draw a conclusion if it really had anything to do with it, but I sure thought so. It was just to obvious. I can tell you for sure it never hurt the action. Oh in case your wondering --Levi Garrett

Also the poll is sorta off, You see I had to answer No I don't BUT it use to be YES I did

I too think some people are watching the "pros" hunt a little to much. Do yall think thats real huntin? If so you are badly mistakin. Atleast its not like that where i hunt. Then again Im no "world class hunter". LOL Just a country boy from southern ohio. Im not saying that chewing hurts or doesnt hurt your chances, i for one dont see how the deer relate tobaco to humans:confused: And i know plenty of people that chew and kill mature bucks consistently. Personally I wouldnt stick that crap in my mouth. :p If you want to kill mature bucks the best way to do it is turn off the "pro hunters" and get out there and spend some time in the woods. I dont do alot of the stuff that the "pros" do, but trust me im happy with my results.

I use to chew while huntin, but I quit smoking and chewin about 3 months ago.
but i never seen a deer react to the chew smell.
the way I look at it is, if the deer is in a position to smell the chew on your breath, hes not stickin around to investigate it with or witout the chew.
Hes what I like to call "in snorting mode" and all your likely to see is a white flag waving thru. the thicket.
if he can smell the chew, he can smell you.
so it really doesnt matter.

I know when I quit smoking seeing deer and trophy deer went up for me... I use scent cover and that works very well too so stating that if they smell the chew they can smell you does not fit for me...
