Fishing report
Friday, May 14, 2004
The walleye fishing is finally waking up around the western basin of Lake Erie. The yellow perch bite is improving along the Ohio shoreline and smallmouth bass are being caught from near-shore Lake Erie structure. Inland waters are giving up excellent numbers of crappies and bluegills.
Lake Erie
The night bite continues to lure fishermen to near-shore waters and to the piers and breakwalls. Good numbers of trophy walleyes have been caught in the Cleveland area, especially along the Gold Coast off Lakewood and off East 72nd Street. Good night fishing also can be found between Huron and Vermilion, in the Lorain area and off Avon Point.
Daytime walleye anglers have been doing best off the mouth of the Rocky River. Around the western basin, a large school of walleyes has been reported from the Rattlesnake and Green Island areas to the Niagara Reef complex. Trolling anglers are having the most success.
The yellow perch fishing has slowly heated up off Cleveland. Perch are being reported caught in the Fairport Harbor area, off Lorain and in the Marblehead area. Smallmouth bass are beginning to move to the shallow-water areas around the Bass Islands and Kelleys Island, around the Ruggles Beach area east of Huron, and east of Fairport Harbor.
Inland lakes
Crappies are in the spotlight at Mosquito, Pymatuning, Berlin, West Branch and LaDue reservoirs. Anglers are having success working near-shore brushy areas and causeway rip-rap with minnows under a float. Walleyes still are being caught in shallow waters at Mosquito and Pymatuning reservoirs. Berlin walleyes are being caught by anglers drifting live bait along the bottom between the Ohio 224 causeway and the dam.
West Branch muskies are chasing small plugs and spinnerbaits in the shallows around the east end of the lake. A few northern pike have been caught on the same lures around the west end.
White bass are being caught at Clear Fork Reservoir on white jigs worked under a float. Saugeyes are being taken at Pleasant Hill Lake on floating jigs and leaders worked along the flats.
