Ohio Region of the Gander Mountain GNWC heads to Lake Erie for Third Qualifier
By Steve Weisman
Gander Mountain GNWC Publicity Director
Lake Erie is the third stop for the Ohio Region of the Gander Mountain Grand National Walleye Cup (GNWC). Set for Sunday, May 2 at Port Clinton, this tournament offers the promise of big 'eyes and heavy baskets of fish.
According to Gander Mountain GNWC Executive Director Bernie Barringer, "This tournament should be an exciting one. I think everybody is familiar with the reputation Lake Erie has for trophy walleyes. Add to this the race for the Ohio Team of the Year, and the weigh-in should be an exciting one for the general public."
According to Barringer, the timing should be just right for the post-pawn walleyes, and that means one thing-monster walleyes. Plus, the location of the fish should be to the advantage of the teams. Barringer adds, "The fish should be close by so that anglers without big boats can also get to these fish."
Craig Aust, owner of Herb's Bait Shop, echoed those thoughts and hopes for good weather and noted that a lot of the teams will probably work on and off the reefs that are about six to seven miles out from the peninisula. "We should be into the post-spawn, so the teams have a good chance at the big females in the 7-10 pound range. A lot of the tournament guys run cranks or they might be switching to crawler harnesses by that time."
Going into this third tournament, the team of Mike Defibaugh and Tom Defibaugh from Bellefontaine hold the lead for the Ohio Region Team of the Year honors.
Openings still exist for the Lake Erie qualifier and Barringer encourages interested anglers to contact him at 1-800-890-FISH (3474), or email the GNWC at info@walleyecup.com.
The tournament director will have the trailer at Catawba Island State Park from 6-8 p.m. the evening before the tournament to take late entries and answer questions.
Teams are to meet at Catawba Island State Park the morning of the tournament for registration and mandatory boat check. Herb's is the host bait shop.
Take-off is at 7 a.m. with the weigh-in commencing at 3 p.m. sharp. "As the GNWC circuit has made its way through Ohio, I think people are beginning to see the excitement that occurs at the weigh-ins. We hope that a lot of people will turn out for the weigh-in so they can see what has been caught and to hear what presentations worked to catch the fish."
Title Sponsor for the GNWC is Gander Mountain with other major national sponsors including Skeeter Boats, Yamaha Outboards, the Sportsman Channel, Berkley, Aqua Innovations, YoNet Folding Nets by AMFYOYO, VIB"E" Lure Company, TowTector Shield and UpNorth Outdoors.com. The Ohio Regional Skeeter Boats sponsor is Boat Boys out of Newark, OH.
