FISHING REPORT
04/23/04
Big winds made the Lake Erie fishing interesting for spring anglers, kicking up high waves, muddying the reefs and shoreline areas, and scattering schools of fish.
When the winds allow them to get out, Cleveland anglers are catching yellow perch in fair numbers off East 72nd Street pier. Night fishermen are still picking off trophy walleyes while casting from breakwalls and trolling near-shore areas with minnow-style lures.
Western Lake Erie fishermen report good numbers of walleyes on and around the reefs. Post-spawn walleyes are suspending around the reefs, although the windy weather scattered walleyes around the western basin. Reef anglers are casting jigs and minnows, but big walleyes are being caught while trolling minnow-style plugs when the wind and waves allow.
Yellow perch are being caught off Lakeside and the Marblehead Lighthouse. Smallmouth bass are being caught in 20 to 30 feet of water around Kelleys Island and the Bass Islands on tube jigs, blade baits and jigging spoons.
A few steelhead trout are being caught from the lower stretches of the Northeastern Ohio rivers.
Inland waters
It's crappie time in Ohio, with Pymatuning in the spotlight as crappies begin to bite along the causeway and in the shallows along the north shore of the reservoir. Crappies also are being caught from Mosquito, LaDue, West Branch and Berlin reservoirs. Mosquito and Pymatuning anglers are catching fair numbers of walleyes on blade baits or jig-minnow rigs, with a few fishermen wading and casting late in the day and after dark.
Fair numbers of trophy largemouth bass already have been caught at LaDue Reservoir. Muskies have moved to the shallow areas at West Branch Reservoir.
