I was just thinking that we should look into setting up a New Foundland Carbou or Moose Hunt for say 2006.
If we got a group together we could split the expenses of driving.
Anyone interested?

I do believe Caribou is the least expensive of all hunts plus in most cases you can harvest 2 caribou.

TF, Are you planning to drive all the way up or just to an airport.
I went on a caribou hunt back in the 80's with Jack Hume Adventures.
Alot of the outfitters including Hume, stage thier hunts from Schefferville, Quebec which has no roads leading in or out of the town. You can either fly in or take the train into the town.
Do you have an idea of where you might go or what outfitter you might use?

Actually, I've found some very reasonably priced moose hunts up near Maine. If you time it right, you can combine it with bear or whitetails. The cheapest (quality) caribou hunt I could find was around $2500. I think I've seen some moose hunts closer to $1000.

Is it BOW hunting or BOU hunting, I know bow hunting involves a bow and arrow, is the other one picking flowers ? :D :D :D :D ;)

I'd prefer to bow hunt, but gun hunting isn't outta the question either.
To be honest I'm really leaning more towards a moose hunt.

Do your homework and you can go to Alaska cheaper and kill a nice bou. I know from experience. Im planning another trip in the next year or two.

I would like to do a elk hunt. I just can't swallow $3,500 or more....way more. What is the cheapest route? I would like to take a few people with me and bivvy hunt. What do you think my total would be minus food, gas and lodging?

Beentown,
You can do an archery elk hunt for about half that cost.

Beentown, my dad and 5 or 6 other guys we know go to CO every year. They camp in State forest, stay in a large army tent with oil burning heaters(very comfortable and dry) 4wd with chains up to about 9000ft. The over the counter bull tag is $493, every other year you can apply for an either sex tag (with preference point) The area they hunt is outside Gunnison and a muley tag (draw only) is very hard to get and costs $298, if you apply every year for a deer, about every 4 years you can draw a tag. (worth the wait though, two guys got 200"class bucks last year) Their total cost per person with food, fuel, tags, beer, etc is around $1000. The success rate is generally 50% overall, with about 20-30% on bulls. The bulls are usually 4xs or 5xs (spikes are not legal, must have a brow tine) although last year a guy got a pretty nice 6x. At least in their area you really cant expect to shoot a trophy but if you draw a cow tag you can usually get one. Of course you need to factor the initial cost of all the equip. But overall its really not that expensive, the reason i dont go is the time, its hard to justify almost 2 weeks away fom home and still try to hunt OH and PA and all the other stuff. I dont want to be too long winded....if you need any more info let me know...

When I went "bou" hunting with my bow we did not pick flowers but we did pick wild blueberries from the sub-arctic tundra and ate them.
I can see going with a group on a caribou hunt. We had 5 in our group and we all did very well. But I really don't know how that would work for a moose hunt. I think 2 people max. would be the limit if you expect to have any success on the moose hunt.

Yeah, but if you take us to those spots then Thunder is going to get "real" mad. Remember what happen a few months ago on bowsite.
As for caribou, I'm pretty sure you have to do some flying. You can hold Caribou Dreamer2's hand. :)

thnflt, thunder knows where i intend to hunt and he made it clear on that site that there was no problem with me using the area we agreed on.all i am using is the trailhead access and will be miles from the area they hunt, actually if i can find another access close by i may be better off using it.i also know another area about 20 miles or a little more from there in another nat. forest.

I'm sure I saw you post that stuff on Bowsite.

When I went on my caribou hunt back in, I think it was "83", It was my first time to fly. We flew from Montreal to Schefferville in a jet. Then, we flew from Shefferville to the middle of nowhere on the sub-arctic tundra in an Otter, which is a float plane. We had an eskimo for a pilot that had a hard time with english. I will never forget the "power dive" landing to lake surface that the eskimo put us through. He said he had to do it to miss the rocks in the water, but I think he did it just to scare the crap out of us, and he did. Believe me!!
The flight from camp was no picnic either. It took 2 planes to haul us and all of our meat back to shefferville. Our plane was so loaded down I did not think that plane was ever going to make if off of the water on takeoff.

HOLLY COW, I just visited Jack Humes, website. $3500.00 for an outpost camp bou hunt which is the one I went on which is also his cheapest hunt. I am pretty sure we paid $700.00 dollars for our hunt back when I went. We were allowed to kill two bou for that price. The only difference I can see in the outpost hunt today is we had to buy all of our own food and take it in with us. Now, it appears he supplies food on the outpost hunts.

I guess the first thing we'd need to do is decided on an outfitter.

I've been doing some checking.
If I was to drive to Anchorage Alaska it would take me a week to get there. Gas would cost close to $500 one way.
It's definitly cheaper to fly to Alaska.
I found an outfitter that looks pretty good.

$2,900 for a two on one hunt.
Add tags, airline fees, and other stuff and it comes to about $4,500.

i have priorities above hunting, its just that way, even the 1100$ it cost for the elk hunt,i did some deep soul searchin on,an for that much on caribou i could do 4 elk hunts,i was going back elk huntin this year but in the long run i could not justify spendin another 1100$ this year too.my other family members want to do things too.thats what i mean.

now if i hit 500mill. in the lottery,i could prolly fit an xpensive hunt like that in,an antelope,an moose, etc.

Hey George i'm with you on the priority thing, I wish I would have done the caribou deal 10 years ago when it was around $1000 for two bulls. Where do you go in CO, it sounds like you do the same thing as my buddies out by Gunnison. (in my earlier post). That is a great way to get a bunch of meat. Do you guys get some nice bulls in your area?

I could see if they were naked or dressed in suggestive lingerie, but come on... At least they were holding deer antlers...:)
If you go on the community forum you'll see a thread about "The worlds most beautiful woman". There are a few suggestive pictures there, but no one has axed that thread or deleted the pictures.
