Its been about 2 yrs since I have caught a walleye or saugeye. I have a real itch to do it. WHen is the best time to fish the rivers? And, where are the best inland lake to try in NE Ohio? Thanks in advance for the help.

Now through the end of April is the best time to fish the rivers. With a lack of significant rain fall over the past week the water levels should be perfect. The inland resevoirs can be hot for walleye and saugeye through June. My advice for an inland lake or resevoir would be to target shallow water flats near the shore early in the morning and late in the afternoon. These are great locations late April through Mid May and a light jig(1/8 oz or less) tipped with a minnow is a great presentation. After that the fish tend to hold deeper and suspend over open water. Trolling with small stick baits and cranks tends to work better this time of year. As for specific places to target I can not be of much help because I have not fished the waters up that way. Good luck.

Cast large stickbaits (floating/suspending rapalas, crystal minnows, thundersticks, etc.) from the piers after dark. Try edgewater or east 72nd, where you will see a crowd of folks casting for the eyes. Watch what others are doing -- especially the ones catching the fish. It's often hit or miss (more miss than hit for me), but provides a chance for catching a 10lb+ walleye without using a boat, and without the headaches encountered on the rivers during the run. It's hard to beat a nice warm spring night on the lakeshore -- especially when the 'eyes are in the 'hood.

Misquito Resovoir has to be one of the best in NE Ohio! Also an excellent crappie lake if the eyes are'nt hitting.....TF

In this area Mosquito is good for walleyes and Atwood and Piedmont are rated excellent for saugeyes. On Mosquito I did well trolling Hot 'n Tots and Rattletraps and also drifting and trolling nightcrawler harnesses. I am still learning about Atwood's saugeye, but went with an excellent angler last year and did pretty good with jigs.
