sounds great, I just have to open another address on my email account. We have the master open and use it for all our bill registration info. She can read about the new offers on our cable programming, but I dont need her reading bout the happenings at deer camp :D ;) :D

george tinkham
04-02-2004, 12:57 PM
YUP ,it will be very beneficial to all, that will attend the deer camp(wn) , to be able to stay up with the happenings,we can keep tabs on quanity and quality of deer located on scouting trips and just chatting ,getting to know each other.

Hey george do you turkey hunt on the wayne? It would be nice to have a turkey camp down there.I'd like to talk to other hunters about turkeys down on the wayne.

george tinkham
04-02-2004, 07:54 PM
Well I have told those that are going to be scouting for the deer camp(wn).Hey we can check out turks too and give it a go.I am not a big time turk hunter, but what the heck,I will string the bow and go go go.Anytime you want to check it out,I'm on.

george tinkham
04-02-2004, 08:14 PM
Oh,Iforgot to mention there are a bunch of turks in our hunting area. One area is actually very popular and almost every year there will be a turkey camp set uo in the exact spot where we will be camping for deer. The first week and the first weekend will be the most pressure on turks, meaning you see lots of hunters and the turks get real smart fast. Its easy to get responses from a turk but what happens after that turk gobbles is blowing in the wind.Anything is possible.

Yes if anyone is seriously interested in joining the camp let me know so that I can add you to the email I will send out. I plan on updating with items that everyone is bringing and what we find when we scout. George and I like to scout but some help would be appreciated. Let us know if you would like to take the trip and Im sure you can twist our arm!

I doubt I'll make it to your camp. I'm not planning on coming up until the 6th of November. I'm hunting Illinois too so that's going to have a factor on what days I hunt Ohio. If I get drawn for the early gun season then I'm going to hunt Ohio first and then Illinois. If I don't get draw then I'm going to bow hunt Illinois first.

I only know when it will start, but I have no Idea when it will end. With the rut nearing the peak after our first week,I would not be surprised to see it be a 2 week camp at least,or many as myself may follow up the next weekend after the first week of camp especially if we got a big boy pegged.I know if that is the situation,I WILL BE BACK!There may be others like you who will come in later, some may be there 2 weeks. This hopefully we will have all figured out in a few months and post it up here and on our group email so everybuddy can figure out when they want to be there.

04-03-2004, 01:29 PM
Well we are hoping to locate a few good ones near the camp site area. The trophy area I know will have at least 3 p$y class or close but it is hunted heavier by locos and hocking tech students. It isnt a big secret about this area .Its been good like this for 35yrs. I have hunted there.I definately will tap it some.Unless I strike pay dirt in the camp site woods, with less pressure.

04-03-2004, 08:16 PM
Hey guys i love to hunt the Wayne.I hunt out of Logan on rt. 93 close to a town called Gore.I've saw some big bucks down there.Keep me posted on the deer camp.It would be fun to hunt with some new guys and hunt new areas. And we can hunt my area any time.I know it like the back of my hand.

george tinkham
04-03-2004, 08:27 PM
Sounds good we can expand the territory.Shoot if a whole lot show up we may need to hunt the wayne from Logan on down to chauncey, now thats a lot of woods.

george tinkham
04-04-2004, 03:47 AM
Oh thnflt.if things go as it usually does we hope to have more than one biggun chained to a tree.The trophy area,no problem but the other area is more of a challenge,a very big area,but there is bigguns there,just got to find them,and I think I have a way to find them,ALL of them.heh heh heh.B^}

LMAO George easy, when you say trophy area these guys might think it is a canned hunt.
Realisticly im sure there few P@Y or even B@C running around, but i hope nobody comes to camp with trophy expectations. This is public land.

Hi Aimrite,

I like the quote in your sign off. Not a cliche but it should be. If George keeps talking trophies and nobody sees one he is going to get linched :D I am getting excited about the season. On the trip next Sat. I am going to take up two GPS units to see which works better.

george tinkham
04-04-2004, 11:19 PM
We will see,we will ,we will .seeing is believingsee, and we will see what the scouting turns up.Hopefully we will see a couple bruisers to report on our group email. That way those interested hunters will know what to expect. If it matters to them,i realize some can be coming from far away and if thats the case we will have the latest info for them, thats why we scout.AUGUST THRU OCTOBER hopefully we got a couple 10 pointers pin pointed.

CritterGitter
04-05-2004, 11:06 PM
Aimrite, trophy bucks can and do come off of public land. My best deer ever came off of public land right in the heart of central Ohio. When you factor that the very spot I harvested this buck from gets hunted by people from Columbus, Delaware, Marion, Marysville and even Mt Vernon you can see it gets hammered with pressure. By the way, that's 5 different counties and each of those cities mentioned are as big or bigger than Athens. Here's an analogy. If Delaware Wildlife Area were represented in size by money it would be a quarter where as Wayne National Forest would be a $20.00 bill. Now, if you divide a nickel between 500 people each person has a fraction of a cent. However, if you divide $20 by 100 each person has .20 cents. It is late and I am rambling, barely making sense????

I'll be checking out a deer camp this year. Oh, and I love to scout!

george tinkham
04-05-2004, 11:23 PM
you might be surprised just how many biggies come off public land, people dont seem to understand the wayne, how it is all broken up with private holdings and everything is being driven for deer, public and private.so the deer are run off private as well as public.and in bow season the deer prolly get bothered as much if not more on private, but you got some control on private but not always.i hunt both private and public and see very little difference to quanity and quality.my 2 biggest deer ever seen was on public, one a 190.the 190 was from the"trophy area and was the 2nd boone I know of kilt from there. Many obb have been taken from this area.

04-05-2004, 11:25 PM
Beentown your enthusiasm is inspiring. I still haven't made it up to the bow shop yet. Work was crazy, but they cancelled OT for this month so that will free up some of my time. I can't scout anytime soon. This weekend is Easter and the one after that I will be in KY for Turkey season down there. Woohoo!

I'll get up there soon though.

7:00 am Arrived 1 hr early at the nelsonville McDonalds.

(Tried to find a default picture of a McDonalds in TF's picture gallery, but couldnt find one)

Attempted to sleep, couldnt, so went to store to get some powerbars and red bulls. Got back to McDonalds 20 minutes later, and at that time my stomach reminded me how good breakfast would taste. Me and my buddy downed a few Mcmuffins and awaited the arrival of the others.

8:00 after a few minutes of handshaking and some BS, we headed off to take a look at camp HQT for the week. A few twisty roads later George lead us to base camp.

Camp will accomadate plenty of tents, a few campers, a 3d range and the toilet seat / trailer hitch contraption TF posted earlier

After camp, we hit the immediate area behind it, for those who wish to stay closer to camp. Found a few good places there. From there, we got on the twisty road to another spot, and found some more potential sites. turkey sign was everywhere.

Round 2:00 we boke for lunch, icecream and pie, then moved to another spot. We were finding tons of turkey scratching as well as piles of whitetail's winter coat. Nice area with lots of ridge running deer. This area had more of the sign that this flatlander is used to looking for

http://www.ohiosportsman.com/photopost/data/520/716resizerub0001.jpg

But I quickly learned that there is more to the Wayne that meets the eye.

We followed and listined to george's instruction taking both electronic and mental notes. One trip and its clear, he knows what he talking about.

Through the rest of the day we came across many landmarks left by others whose feet touched the same soil tens to hundreds of years ago.

As daylight was getting short we decided to head back to our cars, and we all took a moment of thanks for the day, and this downhill walk.

Most of us are used to seeing "sign" in a compact area due to our hunting areas being limited to 10 - 100 acre woods. I found in the Wayne the sign is a little more spread out and so are the woods. When we came across this one we went from little tired to being excited.

GRR am I slow or is this the hardest site to post a pic? Anyway check out the pic of xx78 posing with the rub to give you a better idea in the picture gallery. It is titled Nice Rub!!!

YeahI know what you mean. Ive been digesting all of the things I took in that day, and I'm learning a lot. I wish I saw just a little more sign behind camp, I kinda liked that area. Standing on the top of the hill we first walked up at camp, looking down that old logging trail towards the first gas well, I wonder what the ridge to the left is all about. Next time we go I want to check that area out. Even though the sign is a little less, the prerut is a whole different level of deer movement.

xx78,there is very good huntin there, remember schoonie talkin of the big buck crossin the dam,at the pond.back where we came out by the houses and dogs are the ticket,i got trees there i've used.you can drive down and park at the pull off.i'm sure the clearcut on the hill(second growth)is good and can be easily walked to from camp by the old log trail.i think this spot will be hot,i have scouted the second growth in the past and lot of sign.we got the whole summer to figure it out.

I meant to ask you about that red clay with the tracks in it near the first gas well. Is that full of minerals, or did they just happen to walk through it a lot?

george tinkham
04-13-2004, 04:50 PM
if there was mud around on all the roads and in all the dirt areas all would have lots of tracks but one or 2 deer can make lots of tracks.they like hanging around those areas, possibly salt deposits in the ground,i know this to be the case sometimes.the trophy area is known for natural salt licks mixed with the soil/sulphur deposits, deer magnets,i will show you some soon.

very simple,i put my name on them, they are made of wood and resemble a screaming eagle type stand,i got bout 15$ in them and have been using them for bout 10 yrs.,i use detach steps on private and climbing sticks on the wayne.most prolly figure they aint worth climbing a tree for but they are more sturdy than any production stand made.

OK, now I know why you haven't had any stolen. :) Not to many folks are going to steal a cheap looking wooden stand.

So you can screw in tree steps and leave stands hanging in the Wayne?

You can't leave any stands or use screw in steps in the Federal properties were I live.

TF

george tinkham
04-20-2004, 07:54 PM
you can not nail a stand to a tree on wayne,or permantly attach it that harms the tree..as said above i use climbin sticks on the wayne, detachable on private, makes it hard to git a ole wooden hang on stand which is legal anywhere.also my name being on it helps as most hunters there know me and respect me and my stuff as i do theres.there is latter stands on the wayne chained to trees ,homemade and legal, some left up for years.

Beentown,

I'm a Chief Warrant Officer. My boys load bombs, missiles, guns and rockets on the F/A-18. We also configure and maintain the armament systems.

Last cruise I was going to set up an archery range in my shop, but they put one of our avionics divisions in with us so that blew that ideal outta the water.

I'm reporting to a helicopter base in July. If I deploy next Spring/Summer I'll be on the land. There will plenty of sand to use as a back stop so I'll be taking a bow with me.

Sounds good, just some advance is all I need. Im as interested as always, but I also know its summer time, and there's a lot of things we all have to take care of in order to get our field trip permission slips signed by the mrs. Its deer camp, and it will all come together. I just have to remind myself not to lift on my legs the day before we go back.

xx78 an it is gettin hot in them woods.i would like tuh get out just before light drive the roads a lil slow an then get out an set up a scope on the power lines.this time instead of coverin country,i'll hit proven areas,an we can pick a tree or ambush spot.if we cant get everybuddy there,i can go bout anytime tuh get everybuddy a good place.

wow, they really keep their pattern for that long?
I would think it would be based more on food areas etc.. at the time the hunt comes. corn fields dropping, acorns, etc.....

george tinkham

thats whats neat bout this,i already know where they will be,there patterns aint changed in 20-35 yrs...B^}

It is different down there. Not as much need to change patterns. Food, water and bedding is everywhere. They don't have "fields" to travel between. Kinda different for me since I am an AG field hunter.

oh there are fields, quite a bit too,but it dont seem like it cause there is so much woods, keep in mind the hock hockin riverbottoms aint really that far away, thats why so many deer git kilt on that stretch of 33 ,it follows the hock hocking.lotta green fields, corn, soybeans.then there is the gobs.man, wish i was down there.

late aug. you can check for beds, trails, droppings, tracks, food sources.after oct. rubs, scrapes.you can find these all over the forest but it is very concentrated in some areas, this is where you want to be.get out there enough ,you will find them.

Putting time in is the the most important part of scouting for deer in my opinion. The more time you invest the more you will pick up on what to look for and how to interpret what you see. It doens't always have to be rubs and scrapes. Sounds to me like ole George has a sound game plan and of course it helps that he really knows the area. I'm kind of anxious to check it out, but it's cool if it doesn't happen until June or later. There is plenty of time. Geoge, if you catch me on the right weekend, I might even be able to go down with you to help hang stands.

Hey bean, if I happen to be down there at same time you are, I can butcher it out for ya.
I dont do the bone sawing stuff etc..... I process it boneless so although there seems to be less in the freezer, its minus the bones.
I process deer up here in the northern area out of my garage just for the heck of it for 50 bucks. ( no pun)
