View Full Version : Salt, minerals, ect
Do any of you guys use salt or mineral blocks or licks? What is the best? Does just plain salt work? If so what kind of salt?

I've used mineral blocks before.
Usually I just put them in an area that deer frequent. If they take to them you'll have a hole in no time.

MINERAL BLOCKS AND SALT BLOCKS DO WORK BUT ONE THING YOU HAVE TO THINK ABOUT IS HOW MANY OIL WELLS ARE AROUND THE PLACE YOU SET OUT THE SALT BLOCKS. MOST OF THE LITTLE SHALLOW WELLS AROUND SE OHIO PUMP THE "BRINE" OR SALT WATER RIGHT ON TO THE GROUND ( I KNOW THAT IS ILLEGAL). THE DEER GET MOST OF THERE SALT THIS WAY MAKING YOUR SALT BLOCK NOT AS EFFECTIVE AS YOU THINK.

I have 2 salt blocks deer visit them regularly. I put my trail cam on them every once in a while and get pics of them licking it. Also during the winter I put rock salt down on the driveway.. They hit the rock salt more then the blocks..I had 12 deer in my drive one night eating the salt lol

Salt Mineral blocks do work if done properly. It will be used more as supplement to help them restore lost nutrients over the long winter. As an attractant they are not to good because deer only tend to use them when they are deficient in minerals. I found and its my opinion to get the most out of them, locate them near a consistent food source like an alfalfa field or food plot. Use corn, molasses, peanut butter to introduce mineral block.
Just my experience

what I do is rake the ground to fresh dirt, then put the mineral block on the fresh dirt....I put a block by my feeder and one 3 foot off a main trail...They use it when they need it. in fact i moved one of the blocks 1 time and they still dug up the dirt where it used to be...
