Welp as much as i hate to say it but i can shoot two bucks in my county next year.I disagree with this all the way but if they are going to let me do it then welp i guess i have to do it.I read this is a newspaper article i hope this is all a miss print,If not we will have every Tom ,Dick and Harry shooting any buck just so they can brag they shot a buck,so much for our management program:( i guess in about three years bucks will be hard to find good luck to everyone in these zones and have fun shooting all the bucks up.
Please can someone shine some light here and tell me this is not true.

First of all this isn't written into law yet, it's what's being proposed for next year. Second, you better read the laws and not some newspaper article. The web site states the proposal as being only one antlered deer.

I think Ohio as it has been managed to this point is in the top 5 easily across the U.S. for trophy bucks. That's great and it makes me proud to be a hunter in this state. However, we have a lot better habitat and a LOT more of it than the likes of Kansas and Iowa. If our state implemented an "Earn a buck tag" program we would blow the doors off of every other state! The meat eaters would get there deer just the same. The young bucks would stand a better chance of surviving to be mature bucks and it would be a win-win. Somehow, others just don't seem to agree with this view though????

personally if we wanted to hunt trophy bucks,we all just need to scout a little better.because i don't care what people say there are plenty of trophy bucks out there.thats why it is called huting.

I believe also that Ohio is a well mangaged state for deer. At the recent Buckey Big Buck Club banquet one of the gues speakers said that without a doubt that he believes Ohio is the best state for hunting trophy deer, and he said he does guest appearances all the time. Who knows if he really meant it, but he appeared to. This year there were a record 700 entries into the club.

One thing I have been bouncing around in the ol noggin is Ohio having point restriction areas. Meat hunters can get does or large bucks. Gives them time to grow. This also would help with the buck to doe ratio. I don't know about the rest of the state but where I hunt it is out of whack! Must be a strong chromosome because I have taken many doe and plenty ended as road kill. And it is still to high on the doe count.

It'll never happen, but it's nice to dream.
The ODNR doesn't care about trophy quality. Their priority is balancing the deer herd for it's habitat.

I would like to see a 6 point rule...Shoot nothing under 6 point..that will help alittle at least there would be more 8 pointers and bigger.

Could you imagine the bucks you would see here in OH if we did have point restriction areas!!! It would be Eden!!!

Flip side of forcing more does to be shot would be a LOT more button bucks shot also. Mainly because there are a lot of people that pass on the little ones regardless of horns, with that rule they'd be more inclined to shoot ANYTHING without a rack just to make sure they got there Deer.
I think things are done well enough for the most part.

If you do it in certain areas then people wont feel inclined to shot small deer. It is working in Penn.

I'm all for point restriction but doubt we will ever see it. One of the upsides to having a point restriction is that people are forced to get a good look at a deer before shooting instead of just blazing away when they see rack.
The truth is that the average ohio hunter could care less about taking a big buck. They just want a deer. I pass a decent amount of bucks every yr and when doing so I know deep down that even though I passed up that Spike, 8 point or 115 10 point chances are he will be mowed down during gun season.
