Last year every time I was on Erie I saw some poor guy getting towed in. I Have heard it cost from 3 to 5 hundred depending on distance. (hours)
How much towing insurance is enough?
Now that I have thought about getting insurance if I don't I'll break down for sure.

keep Radio, cell phone and make friends at the marina.
Worst case scenario you have to call and offer 50-100$ for a tow on open radio channel. Somone will need easy gas money.

I just sent the bill in to renew my Boat U.S. membership. I opted for the $500 coverage this time (had the $350 coverage level before). To date, I have not had to use a towing service. But since I spend a lot of time in the summer months 20 miles off shore, and my boat is going on it's tenth season, I want the piece of mind of having the insurance. They say the average cost of a tow is $350. There are other towing services available. Sea Tow is one of them. I know that Sea Tow keeps a tow boat at Geneva-on-the-lake Ohio.

Thanks for the links Ray. After thinking about it I think I'll go with the $500 plan. I don't think I'll ever use it but when Misfit is aboard as 1st mate almost anything can happen.
I try to be prepared for the normal "problems" I carry an extra battery, the boat is equipped with radio, GPS, and I usually have the cell phone so Zfish can call and say "where ya at". :D

the insurance is a good idea since nobody's come up with a workable anti-misfit device:rolleyes:
but if you have to get towed, don't make me ride back hanging upside down over the transom with both hands impaled on a reef runner:eek:

when zfish calls to ask "where ya at?",we could just have him come tow us in and save the money.
but then again,he wouldn't have a clue where we were since he can't even find us at the beach at alum:rolleyes:  :D ;)

now that you have his gps,he's really lost:eek:  ;)

Well now that you brought it up  ....
hanging upside down over the transom with both hands impaled on a reef runner

So I guess I'll tell the story :D

It happened on the last day we was able to get out on Erie sometime in the November time frame. The day started out in the low 30's with some large swells as we headed out to the 27-27 area. After doing some drifting with only a cat to show for it we decided we would troll some Reef Runners. By now the waves had turned into soild 4 footers. Well when misfit dropped his reef runner over the transom the prop wash grabbed it and tangled it in a small chain that I have on my drain plug so I don't lose it. Now this is where it get interesting, As misfit leaned out over the transom and reaching in the water to untangle this mess he got a set of hooks stuck in his left hand so he reaches his Right hand down and gets it caught on other set of hooks with the chain inbetween them like a set of handcuffs. In the mean time I'm standing there for about 5 min looking at a big round rump stuck up in the air with the rest of him bent over the transom with his hands in the water as we're bounceing around in 4 footers. After I asked misfit a few times if he needed help with no reply he got his right hand lose and asked me for the pliers and pulled the other hook out. It took him a few min before he told me he was hooked and had the choice of pulling the drain plug or pulling out the hooks. Oh one more thing about this trip is that it was the first trip all season that no eyes were put in the boat :(

YEP going to get the towing ins.

another misadventure for the chronicles of the misfit and toad:rolleyes:

they should put a warning on the package that those reef runner hooks are extremely sharp:eek:

Hey guys, you might want to check your boat policy re: towing insurance. I know I pay $10/year for up to a $500 limit. Its paid on a reimbursement basis like your auto policy. THINK SPRING

Thanks Brain, I checked mine out (ins) and they don't have towing on it. It will be something to look for when its time to renew.
