This picture was taken yesterday 2/16/04 at about 35 yards away from my brother's condo in Westerville. At first I thought that it was a doe, but judging by the size of it's neck it might be a buck that has dropped it's antlers. What do you think?

We could be looking at a young buck. The two dark spots just above each eye could be buttons. The size of the head and the body indicate that is a yearling deer.

I went up to my brother's place in Westerville yesterday. The deer was bedded about 20 yards on the other side of the fence. My brother thinks it's one of the two bucks that he has been seeing off and on all winter.
When the deer got up and walked away it appeared to be a young buck with a thick neck. Couln't get a shot at him with the D-cam:mad:

I know where that picture was taken. It was taken at Sharon Woods Metro Park, that borders Columbus. It looks like a fawn from 2003. They have shorter necks and when they get the long winter coat it makes thier necks look bigger.

Thunderflight, It actually looks like 100% burger to me. The park where that deer lives is very large and it is totally fenced in. The deer in there are almost as tame as domestic live stock. They get over populated sometimes. That is when they send sharpshooters in at night to kill them with rifles. They shoot them from a tripod or some other kind of elevated stand. Then they take them to the meat processor where he grinds all of the meat up into burger. Then it is donated to the local food bank.

I took a bow killed deer to Oiler's meat processing one year to have it cut up. What I saw there was unbelievable. There on the floor was literally a huge pile of deer. All of them had been shot in the head with what appeared to be a medium powered rifle such as a .223 or something. I questioned the folks at the plant about the pile of deer. They said they had all been shot at the Columbus metro parks the night before.

The picture was taken from my brother's condo's dining room. He dosen't live near the Metro park. He held the camera up to the window and took the pictue making sure that the flash was off. He lives on the northern edge of the Westerville city limits. With all the building around there the deer have moved to what ever cover they can find.

A few years ago in April we found a dead buck about 50 yards from the condo, I made a skull mount out of it, I'll try to get the picture up. It Grossed 133 3/8 and Netted 121 6/8.

MasHunter is right. I saw a nice group of bachelor bucks last summer strolling right across the Polaris sign that can be seen on the west side of I-71. Then in late January I saw 4 bucks feeding in a field behind the mall in mid day. One was a big 8 point. The other 3 were basket or scrub rack bucks. Two of them had dropped one side but that 8 point still had both sides and looked like a shooter for sure. Of course, I was shopping and not hunting?!?!?!? lol There are a lot of nice bucks that roam that south eastern part of the county. I don't know that they get hunted at all as there aren't too many large farms in that area. In fact, there are only a few small farms remaining and some isolated wood lots.

SteveOH,
I guess I mistook that well groomed lawn that borders a high fence with a woods on the other side for Sharon Woods Park. If your brother has not taken you there you really ought to go sometime. I am not sure what the deer density is in there but I know they have cut it way back. There use to be a browse line in the park as high as a deer could reach on it's hind legs. Your brother must live very close to me and now I am trying to figure out exactly where that picture was taken. I had several deer move into my neighborhood this past year due to the construction on the other side of Africa Road. Just last week I saw nice 8pt. that would score about 120.

I haven't been to Sharon Woods since they started thinning out the herd. Last time I was there the deer were skinny and they had everything ate up. Brother lives around County Line and State.
I see your'e a Muskie fisherman, how's the Muskie fishing at Alum Creek?

SteveOH,
The muskie fishing at Alum Creek Res., can be very good or very tough. I fish it 1 to 5 times per week in the summer. It really turns on when the weather gets hot. Alum grows them big and fat.

Not to take this off subject anymore but...I have good luck fishing for Muskies below dam at Alum when the ice really starts to come off. Caught a few biggies before people noticed and started snagging them. The rangers took care of the snaggers. I couldn't believe the size of the fish. You could see them darting and chasing fish. Great sight.
