The late Jim Fofrich Sr., the western Lake Erie fishing icon, officially now is ranked as a legendary guide.
This week the National Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame in Hayward,Wis., so-named the late Fofrich among its 2004 honorees.
Fofrich died in October, 2002, at age 66. Lake Erie and its sport fisheries were his lifelong passion and his status as an honest legend preceded this most recent honor.
He was cited by the Hall of Fame for his active conservation efforts, including leading a drive to eliminate deadly commercial gill nets from Ohio waters of the lake.
He truly left behind a sport fishing and conservation legacy, and previously he has been honored by the Lake Erie Charter Boat Association, Ohio Department of Natural Resources, and the Ohio Lake Erie Commission, among others.
