Well, me and Varmitr hooked up Monday and went for a morning hunt. We saw crows, hawks, squirrels, deer, turkey, geese, cats, and even a few buffalo. Not to mention putting the glasses on a lonesome fire hydrant.:) But, no coyote. :( Tons of tracks and made some pretty good setups, but it just wasnt our day. They musta knew we were coming.:D Anyway, we did get a little target practice in. We both bagged a nice gobbler a piece down on the Georgetown road and 5 canadian geese.:D All n all had an enjoyable hunt with Victor. Anyone else do any good over the weekend? Later!

By the time I got home, it was all I could do to get out of the car. :( You sure put the "whoop" on me, but I had a great time!
Me never would have gotten those turkeys if we hadn't been checken the coyote tracks in Ohio Bill's backyard.:D
From what I've learned about calling coyotes we couldn't have picked a worst day, a lot of wind.
Thanks again 205;)

It sounds like you guys enjoyed a good time. I went out Saturday morning for some rabbits and the dog did well. She ran 4 of them and brought the last one past me twice? Once it was too far for a shot the other time it was straight into a chilly northwest wind so I didn't see it soon enough. It sure was fun. If my buddies could have gone, I am sure we would have gotten a couple of them. Good luck the next time out for them yotes!

Way to go CG. Glad to hear somebody got some fur. For all the coyotes in Harrison county, I sure noticed a lot of rabbit tracks. Plenty of game here. Ohio Bill, got your PM. We were hunting around Hopedale-RoseValley area and pretty much in your backyard. The old Georgetown offices and toward New Athens. Later guys :)

Ohio Bill,
The bunnies are probably just eating browse. They like to hid in those multifloral rose bushes that your probably getting accustomed too. The deer like to hid there too. You probably never had any of that stuff in your Bedford backyard.

I went back down to the same area that 205 & I hit Monday. I went to this one spot we called & didn't see any fresh tracks at all in the new skiff of snow we got at night. (this was the place w/ the lone angus, Russell except this time I crossed the pond drain & went up the other side.) I did my set then headed to the car. Just as I crossed the drain again there were coyote tracks around my tracks. They smelled my tracks & turned around & left the way they came.:( Was I upset .... heck no I actually called in some coyote.:D  Maybe if I keep progressing at this pace I will shoot one in about 5 years.:o :D Thanks again Russell it was a real shot in the arm. I'm all fired up again!;)

Way to go vvarmitr! You keep it up and you'll have one in the crosshairs!:D Thats a good spot, just a hard place to set up. Havent been out since we were out. Gonna hit it 2 or 3 more times in the next few days and then Im done for the year. My cows are due to calve anytime now and have to stay close. I may give Cadiz another shot Sun. but not sure. Itchin to pull the boat out and get in the river for some eyes. River is about ready.:) I'd just like to see a couple more before I quit. Holler at me if you wanna go Sun. Might get another turkey or two.:D

This sounds fun, what is required for a "setup"?

205; I love to go Sunday, but.... I'm on midnites:( You'd have to wake me up after each set to show the paw prints where they ran me over. :D My snoring might bring them in. lol:rolleyes:

XX78: 205 & I just happen to be both fans of the Dennis Kirk system. You have a howler & a squaler. No decoys, no electronics, blinds, etc. As D.K. says "Keep it simple." Get in, set up quick, do your call, pick up your coyotes, & get to the next set. We call for about 10 min. & I know a lot of hunters say 15-20 min., but in the area we have to hunt I feel 10 min is better cause if they aren't there in 10 they more than likely aren't that interested in coming so pick up & get to the next set. Plus the more sets you do the more chances of gettin a coyote.:D

XX78, vvarmitr is steering you in the right direction. The eastern coyote is one tough critter to hunt in more than one respect. 75%+ is finding GOOD locations (setup) to ambush these animals. I'll be scouting all year this coming year while out and about. I picked up several new stations this year that I didnt have last year. Some were only several hundred yards from where I called before. Others may be the next farm over calling the same critters. It is a fun sport that many get discouraged too soon. Persistence is the key. When I first started turkey hunting, I hunted a turkey every morning for 2 weeks it seemed, and never did see him. Then I was hooked, and for the next several years I couldnt stop till I bagged one.:D James, me and dad went Sat. morning and made 2 setups half heartedly. Zippo. No snow down here. I might go one more time. I pulled my 205 barge out and getting it ready. Spring is in the air, cant wait to see my first redwing blackbird!:)

Thanks guys,

I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for more sign. I usually pay pretty close attention to the places that I hunt, and I dont think there are so many coyotes out there. I do have some urban places where I may be able to try it. How close have you gotten to them, ie can they be successfully paterned enough in an area to bowhunt em. Seems there are places that I may be able to setup a call and then hunt from a tree. Sounds like I may be reducing my chances too much.

Again from what I've learned/read they don't stay in one area all that long. You could go into an area that you know holds coyotes & set up a tree stand & do a call from there & maybe sit there for a hour or as long as you want. If you have several tree stands you could set them up in several areas & hit them all in a morning. This could work in the more brushy areas.

205: hearing that first redwing blackbird is a wakeup call to spring for me too.;)

Hey XX78. I missed a coyote from a tree stand earlier this year. It was opening day of muzzleloader season so I set up on the back of a state park. Well, there is public gun area adjacent to it and there was a bunch of guys pushing this thick area near the resevoir and they jumped up about 4 coyotes. One came within in 25 yards and I shot just under the little sucker. It was neat though. It was only the 2nd time ever I have seen a coyote from my tree stand while bow hunting for deer and the it was the 1st time one came within range.

I ve had a couple of shot opportunities from a treestand. They dont hang around forever thats for sure. I got a full body mount of one, but I'd like to have another. Looks like another hobby.

I'll be hanging out this weekend at deer camp near Cadiz. I'm taking the Savage 25.06 and a couple of distress calls. It should be a pretty good weekend for yotes provided its not too windy.
The critters should be moving and hungry. If any luck then I should have a couple pics for you on Monday.

Saw a groundhog in my cow pasture today that you could of shot at James.:D Least you got to go, and Im sure you had a good time out and about. How about Buckmaster? Im pretty much done chasin those yotes for the season. Got my boat out and had it in the river twice this week. Gettin that kind of fever now. That ugly mug of Misfit to the left holding them crappie is sure giving me the urge. Was there still a lot of noise in the Cadiz area when you were there Fri. Id still like another day on em up there on a Sunday. A lot quieter and less activity going on. Did you pretty much hit the same areas we hit, when we were up there James? Had three calves this week also, which has kept me close to the farm. Nice black-white face calves. First bull calf named him Bosco. 2nd a heifer called her Oreo. 3rd bull calf, named him Michael Jackson.:D Gawd, hope spring is near. Later guys!;)

Did you name the third calf because he liked to sleep w/ the baby goats? LOL:D
