I have some visitors coming in the next month or so. So I
decided to clean my gun room. I worked on it for about 6
hours yesterday. In the first hour I had it looking pretty
good! Then I decided to do some remodeling. BIG mistake I
spent the next 5 hours making a HUGE mess of it. I started
in this morning & have been at it for a couple hours. I
thought I would give you an idea of what I am up against!
I’ll post some pictures of it when I am done. I just want you
all to keep in mind I have never let it get any where near this
bad. It all happened during the rearranging project that I now
regret starting. All it needed was a little clean up. WHAT
WAS I THINKING??????

That is a Browning Safe door. The room is block walls and
the door is mounted in a poured concrete wall. The ceiling of
the room is 4” of pored concrete.

After spending most of the day cleaning I am almost done. I
just want to figure out some way to organize my ammo
better. This is what 25+ years of collecting gets you. There is
a lot of stuff in here. I don’t use much of it any more but you
never know when I will need it.

I was happy to be able to put up a couple pictures that I got
at the National Wild Turkey Federation Conventions I have
attended. I also made a rack to hold my cleaning rods. It is in
the corner of my cleaning bench. I used 1/2” PVC to hold
them and keep them clean. I hung a lot of the soft gun cases
on hooks. They help hide a lot of stuff on the shelves behind
them. There are also some I had to stack on the top shelf
above my loaded shot shell shelf.

I think it is presentable now. Now I need to sit and rest for a
while!

Thanks Buckrun!

Now I know what my room will look like when I build it. I've got I liberty Safe, but I like the idea of the room. I myself would probably still keep the safe inside it to protect my collection from fire.

WOW What a difference, nicely done. I finnaly got my flytying stuff tamed down. 12 new plastic shelves later and 2 more big tubs. I stuffed lots of it in the crawl space.

Spitfire- I think you described it best! HOLY CRAP I have
more junk I mean CRAP than I know what to do with.

lureboy98 - I may be a little crazy!

rackman - I couldn’t ever part with any of this CRAP! You
will have to wait until I kick the bucket. I always tell my
wife I have never seen money bags on the side of a hearse.
So don’t expect me to leave her a bunch of money. Just have
a big sale after I am gone. Then you can retire! You only go
around once and if you do it right once is enough!
XX78 - I have thought about a safe in side of the room. But I
tried to make it as fire proof as possible. There are heat ducts
running in to the room. They have fire dampers on them.
Hope I never have to find out if they work.

What are the dimensions and how much did it cost you to build minus the door? I priced block today and was looking at a few options for a door. It was about 600.00 for the block which would give me a 14X14 room using an exterior wall as a fourth wall, and about 2 yards for the ceiling. It seems cheeper than buying a bigger safe. I'd like to have everything on display guns and boxes, almost like a sporting goods store rather than cramming just the guns anywhere they will fit in my present safe.

When we built this we were adding on to the house. We were putting in the basement anyway so the only added cost was the door; a 26-ft. poured wall across the basement and 4” concrete on top. The contractor put wood barn siding in for my ceiling then braced it up and poured the concrete on top of that.

I have a couple friends that made their safe under their front porch. That would be a little less expensive but it wouldn’t be as big. One of them has said they had a bit of a moisture problem. I have heat and cold air return this keeps air circulation moving. The ducts have fire dampers on them. From what they tell me they have a wax think in them that melts and they will snap shut if there is a fire. I also have a drain in the floor and run a dehumidifier in the room in the summer. So far I haven’t noticed any moisture problems.

The door is a browning safe door. I can’t remember what any of these things cost but the door was around $1300.00 The nice thing about this is we have a lot of our family things in the room. Like pictures and bank documents. I have actually thought about getting a fireproof safe to put in there just to be double safe, with the things that can’t be replaced. I just don’t think I want to try to get one of those things down there now.
