Fishing report

01/30/04

Lakes and ponds around Northern Ohio are offering good to excellent fishing for bluegills and crappies with Cleveland Metroparks lakes adding foot-long rainbow trout to the winter mix.

Crowds of ice-fishing shanties have been reported on Mosquito and Pymatuning reservoirs, where walleye and crappies have been in the spotlight.

The Cleveland Metroparks lakes are due for another stocking of 1,800 pounds of rainbow trout after a stocking in late December. Receiving the stocked trout will be Wallace, Ranger, Shadow, Ledge and Judge lakes. Shadow Lake is set to receive the largest load, about 800 pounds.

The ice fishing along the west side of South Bass Island is in full swing with good ice conditions reported. Most walleye have been in the 17- to 23-inch class with some small walleye from last year's hatch showing up in the catch. Yellow perch are also being caught in fair numbers with most 8 inches or smaller.

South Bass Island guides include John Hageman (419-285-2029), Pat Chrysler (419-285-4631), Bud Gehring (419-285-3615) and Jim Massie (419-967-3395). For a ride to South Bass Island, contact Griffing Island Airlines (419-626-5161) in Sandusky, Dair Air (419-285-5057) in Port Clinton or Hardwater Airboat Transportation Service (419-285-3106).

The mainland ice fishing along the Western Lake Erie shoreline has been hampered by poor ice conditions. Anglers have had to be rescued from shifting ice floes over the past week.

Ohio shoreline ice fishing has been limited to the harbors and marinas. Sandusky Bay fishermen are cutting holes and catching some yellow perch off White's Landing, Crystal Rock and around the old Sandusky Bay bridge.
