1-19-04 Called 3 yotes in yesterday morning. One KIA! Finally got snow on the ground down here. Went for 2 hours this morning. Zip! Boys the last couple of mornings were just about perfect conditons. Little wind, cold, and they are getting hungry.:) Be out in the morning. Have a lot of new places to set up this year, and from the scouting there's several to shoot at. I took a couple of pics with my digital, but dont know how to get them on here. Need a little help on that end. I can kill the critters, but dont know how to use a computer.:D

i live in wood county west virginia the cyotes are getting thick here, but i havent figured them out yet. i hear them all of the time just cant get a shot
Thanxs CG, gang! At it again this morning till 9:30 Made 6 stands. Saw one at second stand but didnt get it. Came out of woods about 5-600 yds. Came out into pretty good view. I scoped him and he just wouldnt make up his mind. Finally took down low into ravine that I was at the top of on fence line. Waited a good 15 minutes and he never showed. You got keep going if you want to see em. Like Dennis Kirk says, these eastern coyotes are tough, and forget the idea that you're gonna get one everytime you go out. And if you keep this idea in your head and enjoy being out there. They'll come!:) Cant go tomorrow, got to ketch up on chores. Gonna see if I can get my dad to go with me Friday. And this weekend, Im heading to Cadiz. Who says theres no yotes there?:D I'll be right where someone said there is none. Georgetown-Harrisville-New Athens area. Have several good stands to go to there. Hey Bill, sounds like youre just below me on the river, Parkersburg-Willow Island area? Yes theres several coyote down that way, specially the bottom areas around the river. I'll e-mail a pic to ya CD2 of the one I got the other day. Anyone want to tag along in the Cadiz area holler. Im no expert, but can show ya some places and if were LUCKY we might get on. :D Later!

Not much of a story Shane, but can tell a little about what I am using. Weapon is a TC Encore-stainless-26 in. bull-22-250-with 6 1/2-20 Leupold attached. Good shooter:) Had several shots last year that I didnt take cause I figured they were too far and only had around a box of shell thru it. After a few boxes at the range this summer I wont pass up shots out to 400yds. I jsut use mouth calls. The only ones that wont freeze up too bad in this weather is open reed calls. I been using a Sceery howler and one of Dennis Kirks cottontail calls mostly. I like Dennis Kirks howler a little better for sound, but the Sceery is a little easier to use. And you can take the horn off it also. I wear a white facemask, gloves and toboggan. (Cabelas brand) dont mean to advertise.:D You guys, if you have any buddies that work in plants that use chemicals. You might ask them to get you some of these disposable chem coveralls. I have a buddy that got me a case a year or two ago. I try to get 2 uses out of them before they get too dirty or barbwire or briars get them. They actually keep you warm. I lay down in the snow when I set up, and they are almost waterproof and are quiet. And you dont have to beg your woman to wash them. 25 in a case and I think I looked them up one time on the internet, and you could buy a case for like 50-60 bucks. I have enough to last me at least 5 years. Before I write a book I'll get off here. Hope to have another pic in a day or two.:)

Russell thanks for the story i like to see what guys are using to see what maybe is working ,I have the cabelas recorder that i use i go between the rabbit distress and the fox call,I want to get the woodpecker tape(never though this one would work but some say it does).I 'm also working on a decoy to help out but have not yet master that one yet, might just have to buy one:(
I like the idea of the throw away suits might have to check at work to see if i could get a box or two. Will be hitting it again this weekend so wish me luck.
If you need soem help posting pic just give a yell i will see what i can do for you(what windows operation are you using?)
Well, howd you guys do today. Had a big male yote busted at 7:30 this morning. :D Called in for a ton of grain yesterday, and where I get it at Shadyside Ohio asked if he had been seeing any yotes lately. Said he had, so I asked him if I could come up early this morning and set up. My Dad which is 77 and still a pretty fair shot went up with me before daybreak. Brrr! Dads still a good shot, but cant take the cold.:) I set him in a good spot, and I went up to the top of hill. Wasnt 5 minutes into calling and off to my left was ole Wiley staring at me around 125yds. I swung around and scoped him and it looked like he spot me and was running off thru the scope. I looked up and he was running toward me. Back in the scope and he stopped. End of story! Sucker went down, but as soon as he went down he got up and down over the hill into the brush like I didnt touch him. Dang, I figured another day shot tracking. Went and got dad and by then the workers were there and we loaded my feed. Left dad in the truck and went back. Little blood where I hit him and little all the way down out of the meadow and into the brush. Roughly 200 yds from where I downed him I found him. The shot was directly in the front of the chest with a six inch exit wound in the back. How these animals do this is beyond me. He should of never got up. Anyway, Shane I'll send ya a couple of pics today. And you can pick out one. Sure would like to learn how to display them. Wife says we have Windows XP, if that helps. Later guys! Get out there and git em.:D

Hey Razor, deer season isn't over yet. I never did make it over to Alum Creek. I keep going to my old stand by's in Delaware State Park and the last 3 times out I haven't seen a thing? Well, I am taking Friday off and I plan to hunt all day and then again on Saturday morning. Then, deer season will come to an end for me. This weather sure has been crazy. Snow, wind, rain, cold, then more rain, then ice storm, then more wind and throw in some more rain? I hate when it rains in the winter time. It just makes a mess of everything. Good luck gettin some yotes!
CG
Dont forget them shootin sticks Razor! lol If it werent for bipods on mine, I would never hit one. Gotta look at it on the bright side though. There's one lucky happy Coyote out there. :D Gonna start back on em tomorrow myself, if the wind dies down a little. Pretty rough weather down this way the last day or so. Fresh snow though and thats a plus. Hope ya git one next time Razor. CG, better get out there and get em. Did you ketch any fish?

hi critter, i haven't been to alum since muzzleloader season, that was a mess, everytime i'd find a good lookin spot someone would come in and setup within yards of me, even when they saw me and knew i was there, talk about maddening. i did get a runnin shot right close to the end of shootin time but i clean missed, this isn't soundin good on my part last 2 posts i've talked about missin shots.lol. we hunted back the dead end road right next to the humane society. i didnt see that monster i'd seen bowhuntin though. good luck and i hope you have good weather for hunting this weekend. i would definately be on stand in the middle of the day to if the weather stays this cold, they will and have been doin most of there feedin right in the middle of the day here around the house.
205, i hear ya, last time i get lazy and leave em behind, i think that dog could be called to again, maybe not howled in as easy as this time but the o'l bunny blues might end it for him. if i can hit it.lol. this may sound odd to some but i may be gettin layed off for a couple weeks to maybe a month with this weather, but i'm kinda hopin to, more time to hunt coyotes and get ready for spring turkey.lol. good luck huntin

Well, Razor what was bad for you during Muzzleloader seasn was good for me, kind of. On that Saturday I set up on the back side of the state park which is bow only. It is adjacent to public wildlife area and all those guys gun hunting out that way flushed game to me. I saw 4 coyotes and for the first time ever had one come within bow range. I missed him at 25 yards? No excuses, I just missed. Then, a doe comes in from straight behind me and gets nearly right under me. Then she walks off and just when I think I might get a shot she walks up under a blow down and beds? So, there she lays only 20 yards away and there is too many branches for a shot. So, I wait it out. About 10:00 or so, a small 8 point buck comes charging in. Clearly he had been flushed and was just looking for the best escape route. He came in on my left and the doe was just to my right. I possibly could have soft-grunted or whistled to stop him as he did cruise by at about 30 yards, but I was tied up sort of. If I draw the doe will definately catch the movement and likely bolt and if the buck doesn't stop, I'll have no shot. So, the buck runs up to a ravine and stops to re-asses things. Then, he comes back my way but more towards the resevoir and on the other side of the doe. So, the doe gets antsy and gets up and slowly walks out of the blow down. At 22 yards(but I thought it was 20?) she stops broadside and I let it fly. It looked like I hit her low. She bounds off about 20 yards and looks back. Then, she slowly walks off. My arrow was in the dirt and I found a few hairs, but no blood on arrow or ground and there was lots of snow, so I think I just grazed her underside. I have spent 2 to 3 hours a week practicing since and I think I got the bugs worked out. I just hope I get one more opportunity. Sorry this was long, but it makes for an interesting story to tell how I got humbled not once but twice in one day!

It's 12, noon, on Friday here in Portage county. I just saw a red fox walk within 15 yards of my office window at work. I watched it work the woodlot for about 5 minutes looking for something to eat. Those Critters are hungry! It should be a pretty good weekend to bag a coyote or fox (season closes Sat). I'm guessing we should have some decent varmint posts by Monday. Good luck.

went out again today. didnt get to first stand until a little after 11:00 a.m. , had chores first, (buckrun) i started at the place you and i hit first, i stayed up on the high ground where i sat when u called, i turn on the prey master singin the bunnie blues, about 3 minutes into callin, here comes a big nasty red lookin coyote, he's about 75 yards when i first spot him, he tops one of those hills pauses and dials in on the caller and full bore here he comes, he goes down into a dip outta site so i swing rifle where i thought he'd show, well he shows up about 20 yds further to the right, and coming straight at me, i cant move now, he stops within 12 yds of me ( the caller is still runnin) and stares me down, i'd say about 3 minutes long. by then caller shuts off and he starts the downwind thing starin at me the whole time. goes behind tree and wham i swing to get on him he musta heard or seen or smelled me right then and busts butt across the field, i whooped at him and he slowed enough i tried a shot and i hit just over him!
poof! he's gone outta site. so after whiping up my tears i walk back to the truck and head home. get about 1/4 mile down the road and spot 2 coyotes layin on the open hillside sunnin themselves. i stopped the truck and to look at em and devise a plan of attack and as soon as i stopped they bolted. so another dissapointing day.
i plan on goin again sunday. maybe things will go little better.
good luck huntin guy's

Hey gang! Somebodys gotta start a new thread pretty soon. :D Well, me and buddy Doug took a hunt yesterday for 3 hours. Zippo!:( Didnt see any, but found a number 1 set-up. Made 7 set-ups. This morning at daylight I was at No.1 stand. (listening Doug?):) Razor, dont feel bad, I saw 2 coyotes today within gun range and didnt get either one. Gonna have to get back to the basics. These suckers have lazer type vision like our Stealth bombers. When you get rite in their backyards you have to be sneakin. I went into first stand and laid down in snow as usual, overlooking a big open area. I always look area over and settle down before calling. Made 3 lonesome howls and started to tuck howler inside my white coveralls. While I was tucking it in I glanced down below me and there was ole Mr. Sneakum staring at me about 125yds. He came in around a corner below me while I was howling and probably saw the hole show. Down over the bank he went, and I figured Id git a shot when he came up the other side. Wrong! That sucker never stopped. I tried distress, whined, he looked back a couple times like Yeah Right Bucko. I watched him cut across open ground and up a wooded hillside around 800yds away till he was outta site. He should be in Cleveland by now. Thats the second time one spotted me this year fartin around with my calls. Lesson 1. Third setup I just parked truck out of site of where I would be calling, and with little noise as possible I started moving in towards my stand. My stand was only around 75-100yds away. I just got to where I was going and looked towards where I was going to call, and theres ole Mr. Sneakum II up high on a logging road walking away from me around 200 yds. He stopped and looked at me while I was standing there like a statue, but before I could get down and get a shot he got up around a turn to never be seen again.:D Lesson 2 Guess what Im trying to say is from the time you leave your vehicle you should be on guard till the time you get back in it! Ya got to give this critters some credit. Anyway, glad to see vvarmitr and Buckrun are back. Get em guys. And vvarmitr I see your from Dover, and I could meet ya one of those days in Cadiz. Im retired and will probably be after the critters for another week or so. Shoot me a PM. Was gonna go tomorrow with my dad, but there calling for 0 degrees and some wind, so we probably wont go tomorrow. And hay Caribou, like that pic next to your name. Then you woke up!:D Later

205 Retired! must be nice. My wife says I have 20 more years of hard labor then I can retire to do the odd jobs she has planed. I hate to think of what she may come up with in the next 20 years! I think I will have to get out and go hunting before she gets up every morning and starts barking orders. I think she was a drill Sgt. in a past life!
I guess I better go! I think I hear her calling.

I think we should all try and meet up some where some weekend and try our luck together and see what we can find,Maybe one of you could show me some tricks here.Where is cadiz at??
Hey Dreamer, Cadiz is south on State Route 250 approximately 25miles of I-77 at New Philadelphia. Its the county seat and the heart of coyote country. Coal country! Yotes love this old strip pit country. But, I have noticed there isnt as many the last 5 years or so. Lot of the old strip pit country being tore up and reclaimed has made them move. Also, seems like I'll be driving down an old deserted road back, then has a new house or two now. Sorta screws up some of the good areas to call. Anyway, me and dad made 3 setups yesterday morning with no results. Had one come in behind us on one setup that we didnt see. We cut his track on the way back out. Oh well, thats the business. Buck, wait till you been married 30+years! It dont get any better.:D I'd get rid of mine, but Im too old to break in a new mother-in-law! Hey vvarmitr, I tried to PM and e-mail both and couldnt get to ya. PM me again or e-mail me your phone number and I'll give ya a call. Like to go after them sheepkillers(goatkillers):D We might not kill one, but I can show you what works. Later

hey Caribou, havent been out since Sat. This ice situation down here has made me a little leary. Busted my arse several times this week.:( Gonna get after them starting Fri. Hope to kill a couple more by the end of next week. Shhh, hope them yotes dont hear me. They sure are crafty critters.:) Gonna try AEP for a couple days next week. Never hunted them there, but is a good area and a good population. Razor, that would be one Sweet weapon.;) VV, got your PM. Call ya tonite. Shane, or anyone for that matter that would like to make a hunt say in Cadiz just holler. Im not an expert and learning each year, but I'd say that at least 75% of scoring on these critters is locations and chosing the right set ups. The actual calling is minor. Anybody can call with practice. The best setup in the world isnt any good if there aint no coyotes there. And a bad setup can hinder your chances with a lot of coyotes. Scout your setups in advance before you start calling. Cause if your in a bad setup and start making them call shy(just like turkeys) it will be hard to call them later. Example, me and Doug went last Fri. and found a No1 setup on an area I had been calling before about a mile above. Easy to slip into and can see a lot more area. Better git off the stump, might start looking like Howard Dean.:D Anyway, hope all you guys git one this weekend.:)
