Well today (the 4th) just so happens to be one of the days I dont like to miss.. Maybe it has something to do with the fact I killed my 10 point in 2005 on the 4th? haha.. Well I pulled an all day sit down in a creek bottom located in Holmes County in Killbuck.. I had activity from first light up until 1:30, then it died off untill 4:00 till dark.. Seen 22 deer for the day, 1 nice shooter about 110yards away. Couldnt grunt him as I had a doe and a BB 30 yards behind me I had been watching that I didnt want to blow outa there and for sure ruin any chance of him coming down, so I watched him roll on by.. I seen 15 different bucks through the day.. The one I mentioned, as well as a decent 9 and a pretty nice 8 that may be one of them "I shoulda shot" kinda deer.. I could have put arrows through 5 different deer tonight at different times..

Now, the thing ive never had the pleasure to witness before..

At 4:15 I look to my right and here comes the decent 9 straight toward me.. I put the binos on him and decided he wasnt a shooter so I would just watch.. He came within 30 yards and watched him make a nice rub right in front of me.. He milled around and headed off far enough I couldnt see him.. I thought that was cool anyhow, but about 3 minutes later, I look back to where I had last seen him there he is again comin right back to me.. I put the binos up and realized he looked WAY different than I had just seen him.. Dude was PUFFED up walkin like a bad arse.. I wondered why at first.. That is until I put the binos down and noticed the nice 8 about 30 yards behind him puffed up even more and lookin even more like a bad arse! At first I figured it would just be a run off kind of deal.. NOPE! They were on the same trail and end up splitting off in a Y and then cutting back in to meet.. I couldnt believe what I was seeing.. It was ON! These animals were PO`d to say the least.. They both got the sideways head thing goin on and then outa no where BAM they started slammin, BIG TIME.. I have seen bucks "tickle" antlers but I have NEVER seen this kind of fight in person, at 35-40 yards no less! About 30 seconds into it and the bigger 8 has the upper hand easily and he hits the 9 hard enough at one point that it broke off the 9s right side antler just above the brow tine! I seen it go flyin.. They carried on for a minute or so until the 9 wussed out and started walkin.. The 8 continued to "escort" him (or push him) out of the area back to where he came from all while grunting and wheezing.. In this process, they both came within 20 yards of me and I was still just sitting there taking it in and didnt even grab my bow (really think maybe I should have, but hopefully it pays off in the end).. They walked up past the rub the 9 had made and the 8 smelled it or seen it and decided to claim that as his own and tear it to shreads.. Once they got to about 60 yards, I figured id see if I could grunt and weeze him back in, and maybe I would take a shot.. He definatly showed interest, but definatly seemed more interested in getting that 9 (well, not anymore haha) outa there.. Seen a few more after that, one being a nice young 10 that will be AWESOME if he makes it to next year.. Hes good now, but looking at his body you can just tell hes very young, probably 2.5.. Once I got down outa my climber, I headed to fetch my peice of memorabilia for witnessing my first full blow fight, the broken antler!! I was pumped and it made the all day sit worth it in itself..

Now I need someone that can maybe utilize this antler and build me something I can use (a knife, parts for a longbow, just something) so that this memory can last a lifetime and I can keep takin it to the woods with me..

Anyways, all of this "activity" and only a couple of the bucks were even around does.. So the chasing isnt full blown yet, but "its on" in every other way as these 2 bucks showed me tonight..

Thats my November 4th story.. Hopefully I can follow it up with a "spit deer" and a Wall Hanger kinda post..

Awesome story Meister. I have yet to see two bucks go at it. That is something that I hope to witness someday. Thanks for sharing.

That would be awesome to watch a full blown fight. Just to see how bad they can get. I know with the muscles in their necks they could do some heavy hitting :D. Just to cool of a story. Good luck out there and hope you find your brute.

Was intense for sure.. Wasnt expecting to see that with the lack of "rutting" activity besides the little guys cruising.. I mean, I seen activity, scrapes and rubs allll over, but no does bein chased.. Still the perfect time to hunt and next week will be ON FIRE I gurantee it..

That is pretty sweet! That ranks up there with actually getting one. That is something you may see once in a lifetime.

You should have shot the 8 and watched how the 9 reacted. He would have been like, "OH CRAP! I killed him!" and ran off while looking around to see if anyone witnessed the "murder".

That was my other reasoning that if he came back in and gave me another shot, I would take it.. Just for sake of the story I would have behind the buck.. If I see him again, I may have to deflate him.. By the looks of it, if I lugged a buck decoy down there, hed eat it alive.. haha

Great story, I enjoyed that a lot! I've got a 5 minute or so sparring match on video from two button bucks, lots of shoving mostly. It is pretty neat to watch, hopefully someday I get to see what you saw!

I watched a small six push around a forkhorn earlier this year. It was hundred plus yards out and I was watching from the edge of the road on the four wheeler with my son. Pales in comparison to your story. I hope to witness something like this eventually. Thanks for sharing.

I got to watch a knock down drag out fight for about 45 minutes several years back. There were 3 bucks in all and one was just and innocent bystander and never got involved. The innocent bystander only had 3 legs and he was simply watching. So these other 2 bucks are going at it and I mean all around me, pinning each other down, locked antlers, spit and snot flying, I'm talking po'd knock down drag out. At one point the bigger of the two had the other right up against the bottom of my tree pinned down for about 10 seconds.

So anyway, this went on for 45 minutes or so. So this 3 legged buck (maybe a 5-6 year old (as I had seen him at 2.5 years of age 3 or 4 years before)) was simply trying to feed on acorns and really acted like he didn't care that the other two were in a knock down drag out fight. Well the smaller of the bucks was getting his butt kicked, he finally got up after being knocked on his azz, looked over at the 3 legged buck, went on a full sprint charge and rolled the 3 legged deer. The 3 legger gimped up, kind of looked around and then here came the bigger buck after the one that just rolled the 3 legger. Well the smaller of the two that was in the fight took off beating it, 3 legger went back to feeding and the bigger buck slowly eased into the thicker stuff never to be seen again.

Was pretty cool episode, the only time I've seen it get like that.
