Any West Virginia hunters on here??
I will be moving to WV this winter and plan to deer and turkey hunt WV hard for the next two years.
I was just wondering how the hunting was for these two species on WV's public lands?
Hunter numbers?
Critter numbers?
There is no way I could see any less deer there then I am seeing in Ohio this year.:p
Thanks everyone.

Had a camp in WV for ten years in Tyler County...unfortunatley my grandpa passed away and my uncle sold it. Lots of good memories down there. The quanity of deer is def. there if that is what your looking for but the quality of deer isnt nearly good as Ohio. Finding a Pope & Young down there is not all that easy. I have hunted down there for probably 8 years 4 of which I was tryin to hunt mature deer but the biggest bucks I seen were a 115 in 2005 and a 115 in 2006 which in turn both got harvested. If you have some quality time to hunt it you may have a better chance but when your only down there on the weekends as in my case you gotta whack anything with a descent rack because thats how everyone is down there for the most part.

Thanks guys. I will be in Morgantown where the campus is. Not sure what county that is yet. So is it fair to say that a 115" deer in WV is equivilent to a 130" deer in Ohio?

Yes, for the most part 100-120 is an awful nice WV buck. The part of the state you'll be in gets alot of pressure from Pa hunters. There are some nice farming areas that might produce a little better deer, but remember, they use rifles and are allowed three bucks per year:yikes:

Monongalia County...
Good luck with that buddy. Its like getting sent from the MLB to A-ball in some BFE town where you're lucky to have 100 fans come watch you play. One thing I can say about WV deer is that they move all day long. They also have two legs shorter than the other two! You kill a 120 in that area of the state, you'll be the Mike Rex of WV!!!

Well im not a huge fan of rifles, a 3 buck limit or Mike Rex. :(:irked:
It will be neat to hunt a different area though. As I said before I cant do much worse there then I am doing here this year. It looks like they have some pretty huge chunks of National Forest land though, so that will be fun to explore.
Thanks for the info everyone..

I used to hunt the National Forest in Tucker County (St George area). Big country, but a fair amount of deer in some areas. Where we hunted there actually was a lot of river bottom ground (Cheat River) that was cropped. Deer bedded in the National Forest and headed down to the crop fields at night.

i am in morgantown you will see some real nice bucks running in town. If ya wanna hunt some big woods coopers rock/snake hill wildlife wma holds many a deer and lots of turkey small game. yes you can use the rifle but as you'll find not many 300 yd shots other than fields powerlines and many ahill for backstops also the rifle isn't all that much different than the inline ml. Several 120+ deer are killed in preston county which is next county over. If ya just wanna see deer you are in for a treat they are overpopulated in dam near every county of the state. Not to mention ya can hunt black bear head to the mountains and trout/smallmouth fish. Then again i will be traveling to ohio the next several weeks to do my bowhunting:mischeif:. As for nice bucks OH can't be beat. But finding yo self stuck in morganhole ain't too bad. As far as fans he he! Our mascot fires a musket:D:D
