I had the day off, so I took my son and went w/ a buddy to hunt doves. It was the first time going after doves for me and Brad (my son). Even though we didn't bring anything home--had a pop at one, but missed--I was reminded of why I love hunting so much. What an awesome day to be out: temp. in the lower 50's, overcast, and the trees just beginning to display all their fall glory. And to top it off, I got to share it w/ my son. Wow, it was quite a day to be out!

Maybe I'm old-fashioned, but I'm the kind of person that gets a rush just being outdoors on days like today. Whether we kill anything or not, I enjoy being in the field. Bringing home game is the icing on the cake.

On the way out, my buddy and I were discussing the present state of hunting, how, it seems, so many so-called hunters are just after self-promotion and fame. I guess I don't understand that kind of thinking when it comes to hunting, or fishing, for that matter. Sports like football or basketball, yes, I can understand wanting to be a hero. But it seems to me that we miss the essence of what it means to be a sportsman when we fail to appreciate the beauty of nature and the joy of being, if only for a little while, a part of it.

Happy hunting and don't forget...

Glad you got out and enjoyed it today.

Someone has a line like "there's no way to hunt and go home empty handed". True words.
