Are they the best? IMO no, they get noisy after several years of use. They are a nice built stand, durable, good construction.....but I definitely don't think they are the best....Are you planning on moving this stand around alot, or will you be leaving it in a good productive area?

i'll leave it out thru the season and move it only if i feel it needs moved...i will bring it home after season...i just bought a big dog or something like that, lots cheaper, and the noisy stuff on it is the band with pin that holds the ladder sections together...the metal band slips over the section ends then the pin goes thru it at the ladder sections where they fit together...the band is loose fitting and can rattle when you move...so who makes a quiet one:mischeif:

I think the ameristep skyscraper is AWESOME.....especially if you leave it up for most of the season.....the ladder is narrow, its lightweight and you can put it together in sections.....the comfort level is unbelievable. Super plush seats, leg rest, and a nice fold away gun rest as well, the platform is huge, the seats are huge, you could stay up in it ALL DAY and not get wore out.....its definitely my pick.....the only con, the trap door you need to use to access it...but I've never had a single hunter that couldn't get in it......I have the big dogs, big dog xL's, big game, etc, etc, etc.....but this one would be my pick if I had my choice about it.......cabelas for 279.00

One had my blood boiling tonight........Short story then im going to bed.

I share many of my hunting rights/farms with other hunters. So tonight I slipped ever so carefully into a spot for the last hour of the evening only to find a brand new 15 ft ladder stand in the immediate (almost exact tree) area I wanted to hunt. It wasnt there last Monday, so whats this tell me.........................
1) the area is polluted with scent
2) the deer will now alter there movement around this new human scent equipment
3) My area that I usually hunt and then leave alone will be hunted over and over and over and over and over and over again.

In short, a ladder stand lays claim to an area unlike my mobile style......I put up a stand and take it down almost every time I hunt. Leaving an area free to "who ever is there first"

I can make a list, similar to Medic's but longer, but as someone else said, we all have our preferences. I've hunted from about everything, this is the opinion I have of ladder stands (the negatives):

1. Theft magnets
2. Trespasser magnets (why not climb in, it's easy, it's there, and the owner isn't)
3. They stick out too much, deer need time to get used to them
4. They aren't mobile or easily moved
5. They anchor you to one spot, making you more predictable by deer
6. Generally they aren't high enough for my liking
7. Can't be adapted for all trees as easily as a good hang-on
8. Unless I hunt the same one over and over, I'd need at least 12 of them

I agree ladder stands are safe and comfy, and lots of deer die from hunters in them every year, but the negatives far outweigh the positives for me. Like medic, I am very mobile, my stand/sticks go in the woods and come out of the woods with me on every trip. That style doesn't suit everybody, but it solves about all of my issues/concerns. :D

theft magnets...i leave mine on the wayne, prolly been used but never taken,my ground blind was used too on the wayne but left...guys are lazy today, too far to pack out:D...
as for deer fearing them ...i have set them up night before, and had deer under me next day...had deer so close i could kick them from 8'ladder stands,i've never needed height...actually i dont need a stand or blind as far as getting busted...the biggest advantage for me with being up in a stand is usually seeing deer before it sees me...i dont think being up high helps from being scented...it also keeps wild animals from getting you:Dkeep in mind my ladder stands were harder to see...just a platform to stand or sit on,no seat:eek:i like anything thats fast to get into, whether it be a ground blind, fixed stand or ladder stand...i like the climber for quick moves as why i want ladderstands...wendy:biggrin:...:Deven with climber i dont get to far off ground...faster quieter set up,and good angle shooting in close on deer

I disagree....I don't think deer notice them that much more, I think that educated deer notice them more. We have tons of ladderstands up, and we use portables.....portables are more convienent, but they can be more dangerous. As long as the stands are hidden good, bucks will not notice a ladderstand

Here is a story for you that relates to this topic. I think it was Sunday night.... after I got done hunting I stopped and talked with my folks for a bit before headn on home. Well I decided to cut through a 300 acre farm I hunt and see if I could spot some deer with my peripheral head lights. This particular farm is around 300 acres and has a private road that cuts right through the middle of it. I also share hunting permission on this farm with a gentleman named Bruce that has 3 large ladder stands. About midway through the property I see a flash light beam in the woods near one of the ladder stands. I call Bruce and say.."you tracking a deer?''. He says "no, Im sitting on the couch watching TV". i say "well someone is in the woods over here by your ladder stand". He pretty much doesnt care and Im left alone to investigate the trespasser. I decide that since i dont have my Springfield EMP 9mm that Ide let this one go but Ide be back first light to investigate. here is what I found.

Looks like I had caught them red handed and I wish now Ide have called the law and investigated. The thing that makes me really upset is I had a stand and three sticks stolen in this same area last year. I wont leave my gun at home anymore this year.

I use the Partner stand by Big Game when i take my son or daughter hunting. This is the third season for it and I never have a problem with it making noise.

I had an ameristep blind in the same place a couple years ago and someone stole it. It was lighter weight and easier picking then the Big Game. The big game also has a double rail ladder which really makes it strong and supportive. It is a permanent stand and has been in place since put up a couple years ago.

That is why I (and I'm sure Medic feels the same way) prefer packing my stand/sticks in and out on every trip.

A trespassing thief can't steal the stand off the tree if it isn't out there. It's quiet, fast, and easy to set up...it's extra work, yes, but it protects my investment in quality gear.

And just to throw this out there, anyone who does use a climbing stand, if you leave it at the base of a tree so you don't have to carry it in and out, you're begging for it to be stolen. I've seen other people do this, and I don't think there's an easier theft target you can leave out there.
