I just got a rifle from my dad that I want to customise.
It is a 308 tightneck on a trued 700 action. I also got a 6mm and 243 barrels for it.
I like the idea of being able to switch barrels. My question is I want to put a benchrest stock on it. If I do this will the different barrels still fit in the stock properly and will this affect accuracy?
Also any suggestions you guys have would be great.
Oh yea it is a short action.

I’ll try to help you out even though I may not be the most knowledgeable on this. I assume it is a Remington 700.

If all the barrels have the same couture they should fit the action in the new stock. I am not sure how the barrels are fitted in the action. If they are stock they screw in. Does it have some kind of mark so you know when you have the barrels torqued on for the correct headspace? As far as affecting the accuracy I may be wrong but I think it would be hard to get every thing screwed back together the same every time with out affecting accuracy. At least benchrest quality accuracy.

If you find that special load that produces benchrest accuracy.
The smallest change could and probably would mess it up. I would think just a small difference in the amount of torque while screwing the barrel on could change the harmonics of the barrel.
Of course I could be all wrong. So if any one that knows different jump in here.

There are some questions that I need to know the answers to to help you out.
#1. Why do you want a benchrest stock? In most cases the different barrels shouldn't make any difference as long as the stock is relieved to free float the largest barrel. You also will want it pillar bedded so that the action sets on the pillars. That way you can tighten the screws w/o having to torque the screws just right each time you switch a barrel.

#2. How are the barrels tightened to the action? I know Savage has that wonderful lock nut that so many gun whiners...er I mean gun writers complain about. I know that Fred from Sharp Shooters Supply has put this system on Remingtons. Now the key to accuracy is consistency. So if you can put the barrels on the exact same way each time you shouldn't have much trouble w/ the rifle grouping as it did before, though I'm not saying that it will hit to the exact point of aim as before.

#3. You want to customize this gun in what way? You already have a trued action & a tight neck chamber. You do realize that you have to turn your necks to .0002" under the chambered neck size. That way the brass can exspand enough to release the bullet. If you happen to fire a regular cartridge in a tight neck chamber the neck isn't able to exspand enough to release the bullet & pressures go though the roof. NOT a good thing!

As for some suggestions....be careful & have fun.;)
