I know there have been alot of threads about the scent smoker. I am thinking about buying it. How many people have tried it and like it. Are there alot of success stories with it? I have some scent locker clothes and i am kind of worried about smoking them because of how much they were and the sole purpose of them which is to hold your scent in. If you smoke up your clothes does it come out with some washes. I am just kind of erie about it. What are your guys opinions about it. Thanks David

I have had mixed results. This year will either make it or break it for me.

I bought one after reading/researching all the threads about it on here but this will be the first season using it. I'm optimistic for good results.
I think it would be a really good idea for the moderators to promote/sponsor one thread that would get everyone's participation/opinions and make it a sticky. Or they could find the best thread already done and sticky-ize it. Just a thought.
I hope you get the specific answer you're looking for about how it will interact with your scentlok. I have no experience to tell you about and can't say. I've seen a couple of other guys try to start smoker threads that have fallen flat because I think alot of guys on here have "scent-smoker topic fatigue".

Well, there is a Product Review forum, but not many use it. Do a search, tons of pros an cons.

used one the last 2 seasons and not been busted yet.
Same here, search for Jackalopes post on the scent smoker he's the one who put it too the test and he tried to prove it didn't work and was surprised how well it did work.

Why wouldn't I be just as well off by standing next to a smoky campfire for a few hours with all my hunting clothes on?
Really no differance Steve just I don't always have a campfire at the house before I go hunting :D

Thats basicly all I do. I just hang all my gear an put the gas grill in the out building an smolder some wood chips. If anyone needs some chips, let me know, I have tons of 'em. I can send you a bag or you can come over and get a whole truckload. I have 2 big apple trees to remove tomorrow.

I can not vote on this poll. The reason is I can not answer yes and no. I was optomistic about it after reading about it. I thought I would try the theory out. I made a makeshift smoker and used leaves to smoke up with. The results I got I liked and am planning on continueing to smoke up before I hunt.

DO not use scent smoker with your scent lol..it will completely ruin it. Use your regular cheap camo clothes while using scent smoker if you are not sure you will hunt with scent smoker forever. the smoke will not come out of your clothes even if u wash them 100 times and leave them on the clothes line for 3 months...i would sugesst you get and use a scent smoker but make sure you do not use with your expensive scent lok...try it without first... i found out the hard way..good luck and happy hunting.

For the same reason some people buy a Corvette and others ride a Bicycle... Both will get you to work but one is so much easier and efficient.
Using the smoker itself allows the smoke to be more concentrated and controlled for direction.. You can put the smoke exactly where you want it and in the quantity you need.
Campfire smoke is uncontrollable and much less concentrated due to dispersion.. You have to hop around it like you're doing a rain dance to get in the path of diluted smoke...
Like you said, "stand around a campfire for a few hours (bycycle).. Take 10 min to smoke up with the smoker (Corvette)
It would be the same as sitting outdoors around people smoking cigarettes. At the end of the night, sure you'll probably smell like some smoke.. But if those people blew smoke directly at you from 4 inches away you'll be highly coated..
It's just a far more efficient and convenient system.

Just picked up 2 bee smokers off craigslist for 20 bucks! I had to tell the hippie lady I bought them off of that I was going to use them for smoking meat. She just looked like I would have ruined her day if I told her my actual intent.

Do you have details on how it "ruined" your scent lok suite? Just curious, I just got my smoker delivered yesterday but I also use Scent Lok. Thanks!

Anybody got any feedback on smoke's effect on Gore-tex or Squaltex raingear?
Would it inhibit it's rain resistance?
I assume none, but haven't smoked my new rainsuit yet.

I do not see how smoke would make something not rain proof anymore...

Have not used the smoker and most likely won't. I've never really had any issues trying to remain scent free. I don't own Scent Lok either. I must be fortunate and taking the correct precautions.

I've been using in the last 2yrs and have done my own field test and I will continue to use the smoker while I still continue to try and remain scent free at possible, washing cloths, changing in the field or cabin, scent free soap, I think the smoker just helps to mask the human order and in the areas I hunt most use wood burners. I've used it on gortex an rain gear with no problems, like someone said though its a very heavy smoke an very hard to completely get rid of the smell once you have smoked your cloths a couple times.

For those of you that do use it. What kind of wood chips do you use? Is there any type of wood that you feel covers better than others?

My best friend owns a tree service, so I just get a 5 gallon bucket of any hard wood I can. Some guys buy the bags, if so I'd buy something close to being native to ohio. For my liking, mesquite chips are a little too much for me.

I wonder if putting "Liquid Smoke" in a spray bottle and applying it to oneself would prove superior results than "smoking up"? You'd be like Jack Links Beef Jerky running around the woods. :D

Any hardwood chips will work fine. I would use hickory or oak. My understanding is that hardwood has a higher phenol content when burned. The phenol in the smoke is an antibacterial. That is how it makes you HUMAN scent free. The deer will smell the smoke & quite often look right up at you. Since a deer has never been attacked or shot at by a campfire they don't feel threatened.

Even if you change your clothes prior to getting back in your vehicle after hunting I imagine you still have a strong smoke smell, so does your vehicle smell like smoke. I was thinking of trying the smoker but dont really want the inside of my truck smelling like smoke all the time.

I'll offer a contradictory opinion. I tried smoke for one season and I did not like it. The smoker product is great. If you want to use smoke, it is definately the way to go. However, I don't really like smoke. If you smoke up.....you are going to smell like a campfire. So, now after hunting I have to take another shower. This is an inconvenience. Also, I did not find the smoke method to be any easier than just washing my clothes and taking a scent free shower prior to hunting. Now, if you miss something with your laundering or fail to shower.....if there is a chink in your program.....you'll get busted by a deer in a second. Smoke does seem to cover/coat all and do a good job of diminishing your human scent.
Now, for deer camp for a week with no access to a shower or maybe on an Idaho elk hunt it would be ideal. Anytime there is no access to a shower I think the smoker would be the deal. Another dilemmna.....once you smoke your clothes......you aint getting rid of that smell entirely. They'll always have some smoke smell even after you wash them. I'm due for some new camo next year and I won't be smoking them.

We crawled into bed last night and Tracie says: "You smell like hickory smoke." I said: "I know. Ain't it great!!!" :D Obviously, I didn't take a shower after my hunt. I love the smell personally and I live with, and so does my wife, for four months of the year!

I have washed my hunting clothes twice now. The smoke smell isnt nearly as strong, but I can still smell it. Maybe as the season goes, and I wash them some more it will eventually remove all of the smoke smell.

Do all you smokers mind the wind at all, or do you "forget the wind and just hunt?"
The reason I ask is because I have a spot that is really hot right now but I dont think I am going to get the right wind to hunt it for awhile.
I guess it would be a good test for the smoker.

I hunt where I want to hunt now. I do like to play the wind if I can just to be on the safe side of things because you never know how deer will react. But the spot I hunted Saturday AM is in the bottom where 4 hollers come together. I have been hunting there for 10 years and I could never hunt it without being winded before the smoker. I am yet to be winded in 10 hunts down there with over 30 deer coming through. I watched the falling leaves blow a full 360 degrees Saturday morning down there and they were blowing at my doe when she was there. I waited 10 minutes to climb down and the leaves were blowing 180 from where they had been when I shot. That is one spot that smoking up changed for me. Its such a great spot, but I could not hunt it effectively before smoke. Any more, I just hunt where I want to hunt even if it means hunting on a wind that is not great for that set-up...

Thanks for the info, this will be a big play for me this week, as I have a spot where the deer are hammering the acorns. The wind is forecasted to switch directions later this week which would have normally made me steer away from hunting this spot.
This is my first year using a scent smoker, might as well put it to the test!

I was very hesitant to try the smoker. I kept bees a couple of years ago and still had my smoker, so I decided to use it on some old camo. That night I had a doe and two fawns walk right downwind of me without any adverse reaction.
My deer camp does not have showers or running water. After a hard weekend of hunting....I stink.
I have used it all in the past...scentlock, deodorant, body wipes, powder, chapstick, soap, laundry detergent, dryer sheets, pine needles and gallons of the spray...still got winded and snorted at.
Now I just smoke my clothes right before I hunt and ignore the wind. I've even worn my camo into stores, bars and restraunts, then smoked it right before my hunt and got NO reaction from the downwind deer. It is so much easier to use the smoker. I will not go into the woods without using it.
