Took my first black bear last week on 8/31/09 while hunting in Northwest Ontario. We were primarily hunting treestands over bait, but when we were going to move my stand the guy spotted this bear in a berry field, and I was able to put a stalk on it to 20 yards and get a shot.

Bow? Rifle? Shotgun? kinda scary to be on the ground with a bow at 20 yards.

I hunted with Lac Seul Evergreen Lodge and this was my first bear. Due to the thick cover my stalk on the bear had to end up close. I took the bear with my rifle, a Remington model 700 in 7mm Remington Magnum with Federal Premium 175 grain trophy bonded bear claw bullet, although it would have been a perfect quartering away shot with my bow. I took the bear with one shot- entry through the back of the ribcage and exit in the arm pit on the other side. The bear ran about 30 yards and was down for good. The shot took out the liver, both lungs and the top of the heart...so I was very pleased all the practicing paid off in the moment of truth. They did not weigh the bear, but my guide Gary, who has been guiding for bear since 1989, guessed it would field dress at 200-225lbs, putting its live weight around 260-270. They said they only weigh the really huge ones. The head was not measured.

Good job on a good bear. You should be happy with that one.
