My son was picked for the youth hunt on the 26th. I've only hunted squirrel this ealy in the season. My question is: with all of the vegetation, how do you keep the bugs away? I'm mostly concerned about ticks and mosquitoes. I've used permethrin spray and deep woods Off, but I'm afraid the deer will smell us a half-mile away. So is there a way to mask the smell? Will the typical spray scent eliminators work? (I have some Scent Shield) Will it neutralize the effect of the insect spray?
I know neither of us will las long w/out some protection. Any suggestions?

I've heard the Thermocell devices work well.

Mosquito goose refuge is one huge wetland besides the lake. pray for a decent breeze to keep the mosquitos at bay. do wear headnets, camo masks, and gloves. Its not just the odor of the repellant, but the arm motions swatting the bugs.

You may want to take a gunny sack with you, good chance the sheepshead. mushrooms will be out, under the giant white oaks. And dont be surprised to find some nice sheds in there, or complete skulls.

Best hunting area, try to get the parking lot dead center of C block, north of Mallard Pond.

I recommend the Thermocel. It's worth the money, I have had it for a few years with excellent results. 1st time I used it on opening weekend after shooting a doe, sat it down as we field dress it via headlights and not a single mosquito.

Also Saturday I used it with a belt clip while squirrel hunting squirrel and it worked great, went out Sunday evening and decided just to use off and regreted it.

I second the use Thermocel! I hunt some lake "hollors" here in TN and the "skeeters" are so bad that will tie knots in your hair! The Thermocel works great!

Take it from a Florida hunter and fishing guide. You want a Thermocel !!
Our bow season starts in the month of Sept when the temps
are still in the 90's high and mid 70's low.Without a Thermocel
I wouldn't go to the woods

Thermocell works. Its outstanding. Dannman had one at the "Clay Shoot" this summer. The gun range was one of the locations we tested it. Normally its loaded w/ skeeters in the evening. I'm sold on it! (Thanks again Dannman)

Very cool device :coolgleamA:

PS- not sure how it works on ticks...
