I got drawn for the Ravenna Hunt on Oct. 10th. Never been there before or any other controlled hunt for that matter. What is typically to be expected from this hunt?

You wil be instructed to arrive early in the morning. You will go through the gates and your vehicle will probably be searched for contraband ie: alcohol, lighters, cameras, etc. From there you will go to the briefing building and go through the pre-hunt talk-rules and regs for the facility. From there you will be shown how to get to your assigned area. The areas are typically 60 to 80 acre zones. You will have a hunt master at your assigned parking lot that will assist you with any questions you have. You will arrive at your assigned area after daybreak, so be ready to go once you get to your parking zone. At this point you go hunting.
I see that you will be hunting early in the season, so the areas will be very thick with vegetation. My advice to you would be to listen to your hunt master since they know the area. Try to locate an area with good trails and sit for the better part of the morning. After this you can do small pushes with your partner. There are plenty of deer on this area, but they are not dumb. Can't give all my secrets though. Hope this helps a little. Good-luck.;)

How long does it take for them to contact you and how do they contact you?

I got drawn for a Mercer 11/2. They will send you and envelope with permit and instructions through the mail in the next few weeks. If it is like NASA they will require you to take a background check before the hunt.

RR...Pm me your area.....I have been there a few times, and I'll be there in January too. I'll be goose hunting there in October as well.

"J" That's unusual for that time of the year to be an anterless only. Where did you find out about the anterless?

Some friends got drawn for the 10/10 and 11/28....waiting to see what they are.

56, I got the material in the mail Tuesday. Had the areas to hunt and marked antlerless on both permits. I've been there before and out of the 5 or 6 times I've only been drawn once for and antlered deer and that went to my Son because I put him in for it. We saw nothing but does that year  This year we'll see some booners for sure.

LOL...Been there on that. I'm surprised the paperwork is out already. I also have been there a few times.

Three years ago, I had a 170 class Pig chasing a doe, and in my scope and I didn't have the Buck tag. I shot the Doe and the Buck just stood over her, watching her. I had the scope on his vitals at 35 yards for almost a minute before he left the area. It was November 7, and they were in the rut mode.

That was the second time over the years, that I had a shot at a 150 or better deer there and didn't have the buck tag:whistle::irked:

I have tagged a few in Plum Brook though!

Mosquito is a refuge type hunt were you draw your area then proceed to it where you'll find your blind in a row of corn. It is a fun hunt as long as you got people that are willing to let the birds work before getting shot at.

I struck out for the 7th year in a row. Its a money game. You have to send in all your relatives who dont hunt, so they can transfer their permits to you. Spend enough on the applications and rest assured, you will hunt. I perused the names and picked out quite few related to so called acquaintances who budget $300 for permit apps. Saw one name, 87 years old, I know he wont go when its 20 below zero and 3 feet of snow.

The state has definite cut back on the number hunters picked. for the adult hunts, 40057 applicants, 1038 permits. Thats $120,000 to the state so the profit per permit is $115. and thats assuming everyone applied on line. add in $12,000 from youth hunters.

The overall success rate for adults is like 2.6% got picked. lousy odds.

I plan on taking my mom with me to the ravenna hunt on Oct. 10. Shes been deer hunting over 20 years and still hasnt gotten one. I just got my paperwork today and the rules state that if you can't field dress and drag your deer out then you shouldn't go. How do they expect women to drag out a deer? Does anyone think I'll have a problem bringing my mom?

Shouldn't, most of the escorts that I've dealt with were all very friendly and will go out of thier way to help you out. Talk to them when you meet them in your area and you'll see. I've got a friend who does that every hunt out there he knows the arsenal like the back of his hand and you'd be surprised how many people don't take his advise then gripe because they saw no deer or got any shots  Good luck and post the results. I'll be out there the 14 of November with my son, I'm really looking forward to it. :)

Tell your Mom to shoot any deer, and then find you. You'll drag it out!!!

I would!!
