I've been seeing all over the net in outdoor forums about people eating puffball mushrooms.... I was out scouting today and found a nice white one that wasn't too big.. I brought it home, skinned it, sliced it up and fried it like a morel mushroom.
One bite later i was dry heaving in the kitchen sink.. I mean seriously who the hell likes this... I've had mushrooms that grew on cow crap that tasted better than that...
Off to go scrub my tongue with the wire grill brush...
I think i'll just go back to kicking them and laughing..

I've tried them fried in butter. They tasted like fried stale bread. Don't think I'll try any more.

hmmm, had them couple times and they tasted fine, they don't taste like morals to me though so I'll stick with morals. If it tasted that bad than it surely was bad for some reason

Thanks for the laugh Jack!! I just got this mental picture of you bent over the kitchen sink dry heaving out a cloud of spores right beside the lazy susan with an arrow hole in it! LOL!!! :bouncy: ;)
Well thank you for being the ginie pig and letting us know how bad they are.

got to get them when they are fresh, real white. if they are drying, I would not pick them. slice em, dip in egg and bread crumbs, fry in butter.

Thats the way i fixed it, just like i do morels..
It was smallish.. About as big around as a coffee can. And stark white... The inside down by the root was all white too... It was a young fresh one......
I love mushrooms, but this sucker tasted like a mushroom times 10... I think a fried rotten log would have tasted better.... Wayyy to fungus tasting for me...

I eat a lot of different wild mushrooms & puffballs are at the bottom of the list. One recipe I haven't tried is slicing & cooking like french toast. Then add maple syrup. Some guys love them.

puffballs - only one way to eat these suckers IMO & that is soup. I've tried them fried and I have them on my property so I get them the day they pop - not good compared to other shrooms.
Buddy had a muchroom soup recipe using these - it's good. We actually picked, sliced, dehydrated, and vacu-packed a half dozen fresh ones last week. They will make tasty soup this winter:shhh:

Eat them every year!!! Found a dandy last week would not fit in a five gallon bucket!! Gave half to my sister-inlaw!! Sliced about 3/8" thick dip in a mixture of 1 egg, splash of milk and tsp.of Old Bay seasoning. Then drege in seasoned flour!!! Fry till golden brown.

The bottom pic looks just like how most have explained they taste! lol
Seriously though.. Old Bay? That stuff has 2 uses.. To make something good taste even better.. AND, to make something that tastes like sheet taste like spicy sheet..lol
