Nice pics Steve! I hope you have a few close encounters with those guys. I guess I forgot to mention that I'm from Champaign County and do almost all of my hunting here. I do have permission to hunt a real nice property in Logan County but so do about 5 other guys. I'll be hunting all seasons...Xbow, shotgun and muzzleloader. I'm down for whatever for a team name. I don't have any good suggestions at the moment but I'll keep thinking on it.

I just found out I got drawn for the Ravenna Hunt on Oct. 10th. Anyone ever been to Ravenna and could tell me what to expect? Hopefully I'll be able to connect and put some early points on the board for the team.
As for the name, all me has some pretty decent suggestions. Pick Em' & Stick Em' and Tag Em' & Drag Em' have a nice ring to them but it really doesnt matter to me.

Sorry for getting to the party late fellas:whistle: I am glad i missed the picking of the name, I hate doing that.
Anyway my name is Randy and I hunt mostly in Lucas county. Not a big buck area of the state butI have a couple I have my eye on:shhh:
I have a few trips plannedfor other parts of the state. I am going to hunt Vinton county in mid-Oct., Washington county with bowhunter1023 in Nov. and a gun hunt also in Washington county the second week of gun.
I hunt normally 4-5 times per week and probably won't shoot a buck unlessit breaks 130. You can count me in for scoring some doe points.

Is that a bow or gun hunt?? I have only hunted Ravenna once a few years ago and we did really well. It was an antlerless only hunt for us. Of course we both saw nice bucks first thing in the morning:irked: My buddy conected on a doe about 10 am. Wegother out and decided to sliphunt with one of us 100 yards upwind and 100 yards ahead of the other. We had hunted together for years so we knew each others pace. Anyway it was similar to other hunts we had done with our bows in standing corn(this was a gunhunt). Any way I connected on a doe sneaking away from him.
We then hit a really thick area andI did a gentle push/stillhunt to him and he busted another deer. By this time we only had 30 minutes left tohunt so I walked inside the woods maybe 50 yards from the road very slowly. I spotted a deer 75 yards off. Since it was anantlerless hunt and the deer was behind some trees I had to do some manuvering to make sure it was a bald one. It was so I hammered it. It was a button.
You should have seen the looks on the turnpike cominghome with 4 deer stacked on my hitch hauler.
My advice would be if the deer stop moving do some still hunting or gentle pushes if you are comfortable safety wise doing that with your partner. I know I would have not hunted the way we did with just anyone. If memory serves me we were the only group that filled our 4 tags. Most guys sat all day. It was warm and natural movement ceased when the sun was full in the sky.
Hope that helps, any other questions just ask.

I also take my girls out with me but they don't hunt, does that count??LOL One of the neighbor kids also tags along sometimes, shoot there is another 5:p

Well boys I've suffered a little preseason setback. My dad was hospitalized almost 2 weeks ago and will soon be released to a nursing home for rehab. The last little bit of scouting and prep i had planned for the last couple of weekends has gone by undone, but that's ok, I could go out hunting tomorrow and still be alright (things are never gonna be perfect anyway, right? Just gotta get out there...) So some of the time I'd planned on being in the field may be used on more important matters in the near future, but first things first.
Sunday I did get out in the woods at Dad's place for a couple of hours to put in a ground blind and cut some shooting lanes. After spending days in the hospital, it was pretty theraputic for me. On the picture below I've outlined Dad's place...it's 5 acres, a little over 2 in woods. This is down in Adams county. So I'll be entering the woods at the lower right corner and my blind is about 50 yds in from the woodline, kinda centered. The road is the low spot and it's uphill to the woods, a gentle slope. The house across the road is on a hill also. Right down thru the center of our woods is like a funnel, and just inside the woodline is a clearing with low grass where some deer have occasionally bedded. From my blind I can cover almost all of the lower half of the woods, and the trail spots coming from up the hill. The red x near the right corner of the woods is a huge oak tree, and there are more in our woods. It's a small spot, but deer have been traveling in and out. They hit some corn I spread a couple weeks ago and although it's late, i put out a salt and a mineral block about 30 yds from the blind. Scent control is gonna be a big issue for me in this spot, but I got a smoker and hope it's all it's cracked up to be.
I've also got a spot closer to me in Clermont county where I can hunt, and have taken pictures of a nice buck with a basket rack. In any event, I'll get a doe and a buck, I won't quit till I do. You can count on points from me. I'll try to hold out for the largest buck possible, but being a relative rookie I'll be honest with ya - if he looks nice, I'm shootin'.
Anyway, that's what's going on with Dan - I'm looking forward to the 26th. Mom is insisting that I continue with my hunting plans, because she says that some success stories will help my dad's spirits.
If I'm not successful in this spot at first, I might take some pictures and video of the area and get your guys' feedback on how to change the setup.

To me Erie ice is an adventure every time out. The end of the season last year was almost too much of an adventure:bouncy: We got off but alot of guys did not without help from the CG. If we get ice and you want to give Erie a try hit me up and I'll get you out. If there is ice I'll be there.
As far as the deer I got a nice giddy-up in my step over the weekend. Had a nice 8 in Sat., Sun., and Mon. night, just after legal time on Sat. I'll see if I can get 1023 to post the pic here.

Well we're a week away from the opener...is everybody ready?
I'm still not sure if I'll be out on the 26th, my dad is convalescing in a nursing home and may be getting out around that time. I just got an apartment for them that's real close to me and I'll be moving their stuff this weekend. Hopefully I can get everything done and all my honeydo's done before then and be able to be out next weekend.
Last Sunday spent time in the woods at my folks' place in Adams county, checking cameras and tuning my setup there. Also got to go to the place I'll be hunting in Clermont County and cleared a ground blind spot. Gonna put out some corn this weekend (I hope) if I get a chance.
Have y'all been following the smoker threads? Who uses smoke? I'm giving it a try.

Dad's still in the nursing home, getting his strength back and doing as well as can be expected. Looks like he'll be there for a little while, at least past this weekend. Got Mom moved in and mostly settled last weekend, moving more furniture tonite that should just about get it. Now if I can get some outdoor lamps hung (I promised my wife I wouldn't go hunting until they were done) this week I just might be able to go out Saturday:bouncy: Keep your fingers crossed.

I had planned on being out Saturday morning trying to get a hunt in before the rain. Now I find out that a buddy of mine is moving into his new house Saturday and I had already promised to help him move. So guess where I'll be Saturday? The bad part is he is a bow hunter also, he should have known better. Everyone else going to be out Saturday? I'll be out Sunday for sure.

Hunted all day Sat at my Clermont Co spot - saw 5, got busted twice, :irked:no shots. Hunted till noon Sunday at my dad's in Adams county, didn't see a thing, and the corn I put out a week ago hasn't been touched:confused:.
Saturday was a good day though - after seeing nothin all morning got up to spot/stalk and saw two crossing a path between hillsides, tried going around the hill to catch 'em at the other end but nothing doing. Went back to set up on the crossing spot and got busted by a couple as I was settling in - if I'd only been there 5 mins earlier! Then in same spot 45 mins later put my bow down and was rattling around in my pack for a snickers bar and BAM! look over and there's a doe looking at my spot, stomping the ground. Started snorting and faded back into the brush. She stayed over there snorting for about 15 mins. I learned a lesson though...I found the hot crossing, but tried setting up too close, hoping to catch them in the open on the path/clearing. Should have set up about 20 yrds back and let them come over and busted 'em as they entered the woods. Won't make that mistake again.
I have doubts about my dad's place being able to produce for me. I have pictures of them coming thru, but the pics only happen every few days and I think for early season it would just be luck if I were there at the right time. But it will be a good place (I hope) to try and rattle/call 'em in from the other side of the hill during the rut.
All in all, a good weekend, learned alot. Hope to produce points for the team soon. Hope you guys had a good one.

I took my son out yesterday afternoon and we did not see a single deer:( I checked the BEC behind the house and of course there were three does and three bucks that visited the apples:nono: I guess I picked the wrong spot. The 8 point would have been a nice first buck for my son.
With the wind and rain forecast over the next few days I probably will not head out until Weds after work.

Went out this morning, not much luck. The day started out bad when my butane lighter clogged so I couldnt get my scent smoker going. I went without it and got busted at 7:30 by a deer at the bottom of the hollow I was hunting. Thought I had the wind right but who knows on a day like today. I had to hunt from the ground because it was so windy. I did see a flock of turkey and was able to call them in to 20 yards by just using my mouth, kind of excited about that. I had them gobbling and clucking like crazy. Other than that Im windburnt and have class for the rest of the day.
On a side note: How many of you drink coffee before you head out? I always have my cup on the drive out and after getting winded today it got my thinking if the coffee and banana I had this morning was enough to bust me today?

Swan, I think we get points for you taking your son out, don't we? Does he qualify?
I'll have to check the rules but I'm pretty sure he does, he is only 13. I'll have someone post some pics and his story when he gets one!!
I hunted the hard winds last night and saw a small 6 point and a pretty good 8 I would like to get my son on. We are going to hang a stand for him today between work and soccer practice. I really hate to put up another stand but mine is 27' and the tree is too big for a harness so i don't want him hunting that one. I have a tree picked out and should not have to trim anything, hopefully in and out in a 1/2 hour. If we get it done quick enough I am going to take him to another set-up where I already have two stands up.
As far as the coffee I seldom drink it while in the woods, just Pepsi. I doubt that is what tipped them off. If the wind is wrong they will smeel you no matter how scent free you are. The only thing I have seen work most of the time if the deer are downwind is the scent smoker. Its not foolproof but works better than anything else I have tried.

Took my son out agian last night to one of my better spots and we did not see a deer or squirrel:irked: He had fun so that is all that counts.
I went to a secondary stand tonight and had a doe moving in and I tried to get in position for a shot and another doe i did not see must have seen me move and gave me a whistle and they both busted out. Did not see jack the rest of the night.
Hopefully I will get my son out tomorrow and one of us will draw some blood.

I can't remember what section I hunted in Ravenna, sorry.
I hunted a buddy's stand last night and had 3 nice does in but just could not get a shot. It was a great evening out. I had tons of birds (robins, cardinals, doves, turkeys, and wood ducks) all hitting the small pond. Great action all evening.
If my wife gets off work early enough to take over soccer duties I am going to hunt a stand I have not hunted since Dec. of last year. There is a huge white oak that always produces. I have a pretty good feeling about this stand.
I'll be out in the afternoon tomorrow and Sunday, not sure where yet. Have stuff I need to do both mornings.

I'll wait till Jan. to post just a story:whistle: I am pretty confident he or I will score at some point while hunting together:whistle: This is his third season and he killed one with his shotgun his first year, and one with both his smokepole and crossbow last year. Good job, stealth. I'm glad someone's on the board, we'll all get there soon I'm sure.
Boys, I was out again this weekend - got busted 3 times on Saturday morning, wind was swirling in the hillside hollow I was hunting. I'm seein' them, but they're seeing/smelling me. I'm about tired of hearing the stamping and the snort/wheeze.
Saturday nite moved to my dad's - was waiting for the normal traffic from across the road, thru our yard and into the woods where my blind is - that nite they picked to come bounding across the yard at 7:15 parallel to the woodline, then cut into the woods 150 yards to my left. Bummer. Sunday am was in the blind from 6:30-8:30am, didn't see anything but squirrels and the sunrise.
I really thought I'd have tagged one by now; I guess that's just hunting.
I am optimistic about the next time I go out to the spot where I've been getting busted - I built a sniper nest from downed logs that should provide better cover and a better location to shoot from.
Good job, stealth. I'm glad someone's on the board, we'll all get there soon I'm sure.

That is hunting.:D
You hang in there and DO NOT get casual. Your turn will come my brother.:coolgleamA:

I have yet to see a deer from me stand. I thought they were hitting the oaks but it must be another oak tree they like better. I'm hunting a big white oak so they will start hitting it soon.

I went to the range this morning and made sure my shotgun was still sighted in for my ravenna hunt this weekend. If a doe pops out she should be done for. My shoulder took a pretty good beating though, I'll see if I have any bruising in the morning.

Nice doe stealth!!
Not much to report from here. I have not seen a deer this week, the last two days I have not been out due tosoccer games, maybe tonight if the rain lets up. I took my son out a couple days ago I did not see a deer but he saw 6! He shot over the back of a 7 point, man was he excited. Glad he at least got to see a few...

I knocked down a big doe saturday at the ravenna hunt. It will be a few days before I get some pics up since I had to borrow a camera. Too bad it was doe only, she came running with a 140"+ 10 point and another doe.

Congrats! Musta been tough to watch the 140 run by, but that meat in the freezer and 5 more points on the board will help ease the pain a little.

Still havent received an e-mail with my pic yet, but at least I can fill you in on the details of the hunt.
We got there about 5:15am for orientation. Id say there was close to 200 hunters there, not counting the escorts that hunted (1 per zone). We head out to our spot and the road to our parking lot was gated shut. Our zone was a good 1/2mile down that road and with my mom's knee bothering her, there was no way we could walk it in a short amount of time. One of the escorts volunteered to drop us off on the back side of the zone so we could get started. We didnt see a thing all morning so I put mom on stand and I went for a short walk. I ended up bumping 2 doe which ran the opposite way of course and ended up right in the lap of 2 escorts hunting in our zone. They both get one. I circled around back to mom and saw 3 more I thought for sure were headed right for her but no luck.
We headed out to the truck for lunch. I had to walk back and get the truck now that the gate was finally open. During lunch we talked to a non-hunting escort who told us of a spot to try for the evening. We made our way out to this spot. I set my mom up on a ridge top opening covered with acorns. I went out the ridge about 50 yards and found a clearing to watch. A couple hours pass with no deer until I notice something moving at the bottom of the ridge. I make out a good buck with at least one other deer running up the ridge to us. I whistle to mom to get her attention and point out the deer. The buck was leading 2 doe right up to us. He came running about 25 yards of me with the does out at about 60 yards. Being a doe hunt only I had to watch the buck run by. I picked out the bigger of the 2 doe and when I had a clearing I gave out a bleat. Surprisingly all 3 deer stopped. Of course the buck offered a clear 25 yd broadside shot and both does stopped behind trees. They only stopped for a second before they were off again. I bleated again and this time the big doe stopped in a clearing 60 yds away. I was able to get a shot off before they took off again. They went right behind my mom but stayed in the brush so she couldnt really see them. She never did get a good look at the 140"+ buck which was a bummer. I loaded another shell and walked over to where the doe stood to see if I hit her.
I found hair and good blood and backed out to go let mom know and give the deer time. When I reached mom she said she heard a 'thud' like something hit the ground across from her. We sat for 30 minutes and proceeded to follow the blood trail. After about 10 yards the blood was covering a 10ft span on the ground and was sprayed up on the brush and samplings. After a few more yards my mom spotted her down in front of us. The shot took out both lungs and the top of the heart. I swear by the 3" buckhammer slugs. Deadly accurate and put a devistating hole in a deer.
I think my mom was more excited with the deer than I was which was awesome to see. It was just great to be able to spend a day out in the woods with her. Id rather of had seen her get the deer but it never works out the way you want.
I heard just a few shots all day. Id say out of maybe 250 hunters, there might have been 50 or so deer taken. Im still looking for the harvest numbers. All in all it was fun. It was not like I was expecting though. Theres not a lot of deer in the arsenal anymore. I seen very little sign, no trails, and 2 fresh rubs all day.

But i already had taken this buck
http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk212/bakerbuck/IMG_0214-1.jpg?t=1228680493
So i looked hard and found his sheds, then this summer i got him on trail cam in velvet. Then on thursday oct 22nd i had him come within 10 yards and i went to draw and he heard the arrow on the rest make a slide sound, but never busted me,so now i knew i had to come up with a plan so i took my index finger that holds the bow and raised my arrow and drew , just as my bow was gettig ready to cam over the broadhead hit my glove and nocked the arrow out off the string and it fell to the ground, of course he ran out of sight. Then on oct 27 he came within 10 yards again but it was raining so he didnt hear the arrow this time, now at full draw i put my sights on the arm pit and let it fly.He took of and fell dead with in 45yrds.Hit him perfect in the heart. He weighed 230 pounds field dressed and i rough scored him at 147 7/8. I was pretty excited!!!
Here are his sheds from last year

Sorry boys, nothin to show for this weekend. Lots of action tho, and I let two forkhorns pass in the morning. Saw a fat 6point with a small rack a few times, always out of range. In the afternoon had one come within seven yards of where I was sitting on the ground, but his right antler was broken or deformed, so I let him walk. I didn't see a single doe all day! Working all this week but taking vacation Sun 8th thru Sun 15th.

Ditto! I've been on vacation the past few days and while Thursday was surprisingly slow, today was the exact opposite. My hunting partner and I played tag with a 140' 8ptr that was running a doe all over the woods between us. Also saw another nice deer bumping 6 does at dusk tonight. The next few days should be excellent. Good Luck!

Long story short I misjudged the yardage on a 150 class 10 point on Friday and only saw a couple small bucks the rest of my time down south. I plan a couple after work hunts this week and then am probably going to head to Michigan for the rifle opener this weekend. Still plenty of season left, I'll get something on the board, hopefully soon.

I couldn't agree with you more dannman, I keep passing up the small bucks waiting for that big one and so far only seen one shooter. Also seems like everything is working against me this year as far as getting a doe. Everything from bobcats, 10 people riding horses right through where I'm hunting, even the button buck eating food from me. But I'm still going to hang in there and drop one here soon. I've had at least 5 small bucks withing bow range but passed on all them I need some deer meat.

I havent seen a thing since I got my doe on Oct 10th. I wouldnt even know its the rut if it wasnt for others posting their success. I think the deer are nocturnal from alot of hunting pressure where Im hunting. Ive been out at least once every week but havent seen an actual deer yet. Ive seen fresh sign and a good buck keeps leaving me fresh rubs every time Im out. I hung my camera up yesterday while I was out to hopefully find out when they're coming through and what direction they're coming from. Based on what my buddies were seeing up north in Mich. I decided not to spend the $140 on a tag and made the trip a social event with old friends rather than a hunting trip. Good thing is I did not burn any vacation time and have 4 days left to use.
When I got home from the trip north I took my son out and he missed a doe:irked: I think he was shaking too much lol.
I did kill a button last week. I did not put the binos on him, I thought it was a 1.5 year old doe. Oh well its meat. I need to get another for the contest, I forgot to take pics.
I'll be out tonight, fishing Erie tomorrow, and youth season this weekend with my boy. If I don't get it done tonight looks like next week will be my next chance to get out.

11-27-2009, 07:52 AM
I'll be out bowhunting on Saturday and I'm taking off work Monday and Tuesday for gun season. I've been seeing a lot of deer on the property I hunt, but only one 8 point that I would consider a shooter and he has stayed out of range all 5 times I've seen him. He was bumping does around Monday evening so hopefully I'll run into him again Saturday or Monday morning. The adjoining properties are hunted very heavily so I'm betting after Monday morning he'll either be in a truck bed or in the thickest cover around. For those of you that are planning to go our monday, I hope you all have a safe and successful hunt.

Took a nice 6 pointer first day gun season. I took a picture with me cell phone and it didn't turn out. So after I get it back from the processor i will take a picture of the antlers along with the tag. Wasn't a monster , about 17" spread. The exceptional thing about him was the weight, he weighed in at 165 after field dressing. I had a heck of a time dragging him out of the woods.

I hunted 4 days and only saw one, couldn't get a bow shot. Skunked both gun days.
Cruel irony, I killed a doe with my truck on Mon nite after being out all day.

Not yet, I was south for the weekend. A buddy got out Sunday at a marina. Hopefully the rain coming over Christmas does not ruin things, I am off next week and was going to try and get out.

Will be heading out tomorrow to try and fill my moldy buck tag. This is the latest in the season in which I've ever bowhunted and I've almost had it. I have been seeing piles of deer, but no horns at all. I had pretty much given up until a friend and I were setting up a camera last Saturday and bumped 4 bucks out of a field edge on the ATV so that got the blood flowing again. We had numerous close encounters with a 140' 8 ptr earlier in the season and he's been showing up again. I'm not optimistic...but as they say, you can't kill anything from the couch. Guess we'll see what happens....

I see we have dropped to 7th place, does everyone have their points turned it? I've been ice fishing the last few weeks so I haven't helped getting us any points.

I have still been chasing does a time or two a week. I have been chasing the kids around with their stuff and getting some stuff done around the house. I need tohave Hunter get his youth hunt upfor our 5 points.
