Well looks like I have a pretty good team :D I recognize most of the names on it.
Team #11

Atowngolfer, davideugene05, uncleodie, Cap’t Ernie, BEARBOY360, “J”

I have a feeling this is going to be a good year for us :bouncy: I'll start it off. I'll be hunting Mahoning, Columbiana and Guernsy counties this year. They probably be some side trips throughout the season but these will be my core areas of hunting. I live in Salem and most of the properties are within 20 minutes of my house and I'm planning on spending as much time as I can in the woods  With the exception of David and BearBoy I'm pretty familiar with the rest of you and glad to see Uncle Odie with us. You have a good rep as far as getting the good ones :D Well feel free to chime in with your thoughts on this. Again welcome to the team and start thinking of a name. I'm pretty open to that. Later. Hey everyone, good to hunt with ya this year. I live and hunt in Highland co just south of Hillsboro. I baicaly hunt in my front and back yard. Pretty much have everything set up and ready to go. Got a few more stands to set, but we will be ready when the gate opens.

I see a couple names that i have not seen on a team in the past. Welcome to both of you and enjoy the fun, i have had a good time and enjoyed the past seasons.

J, don't know much about my rep, weather it be good or bad but i guess that would depend on who you talk to. I am retired and have plenty of time to hunt. I spend a lot of time in a tree during bow season and try to hunt wise and hard.

Good luck to everyone and lets have fun. :bouncy:

My name is David I am hunting mostly in mahoning county and wayne county. i have some good deer on my property. Nothing with a ton of points which is what we need but i have some that have alot of length and mass. I go to college but I hunt as much as I can. I also plan on taking both of my brothers hunting which just got their licenses this year so that can get us some extra points. If i can do anything to help let me know. This is my first year doing the contest so if i have any questions I am sure you guys might know the answers. I am mostly ready for season and sure am ready to get into the woods. I have some pictures of my deer on the cam page so if you want to take a look feel free. Anything I can help you guys with let me know. Glad to be hunting with you this year.

Welcome aboard Guy's, Looks like a few more need to check in then we can decide on a name for our winning team :D Think about what you'd like for a name and then we'll hash it out. In the mean time I'm still getting prepared and getting the itch  Have a good week.

Heard from bearboy and now just waiting for Davideugene So if you happen by stop in and say hi. Has anyone been thinking of any names yet? I have really put any thought into it yet but if tou like something post it and we'll put it to a vote. How's the scouting been? Not to bad where I'm at nothing huge like some others I've seen posted on here but enough to hopefully help  Keep in touch. "J"

Sorry i haven't been on the board for a couple of days, but i had a family member that had some health issues, but we are all squared away now and things are fine.

Got some camera out and have been seeing some decent bucks. Got some stands up but still got to put up a few more. Prob gonna try to get them up next week. Anyone else got a big one lined up for the taking?

Whitetail Wizards, Whitetail Wonders, Whitetail Wackos, Deer Dudes, any name is fine with me.

Has anyone heard from our last team member? Maybe on vacation or just shy. I am sure he will check in soon.

I havnt thought to much about names either. Whatever we choose is fine with me. I have been seeing the same big boy pretty often. Mostly in the dark but some in the light i also have a few decent little bucks. Got one more stand to put up this weekend and just got a new place to hunt tuesday so i gotta go scout it a little bit. But i am hopeful for the season.

Is mum the word?? Just wondering, no one talking. Has anyone heard from our 6th team member? Got to go check cameras today and maybe put up a tree stand or two. Made 4 ft ladder extensions for 2 of my ladder stands yesterday, they just were not high enough.

atowngolfer
09-05-2009, 10:47 AM
What do we do if our other guy doesnt check in? Season is getting close and we need to get a name dont we? I am also going to check my cameras today, got another stand to hang then going to scope out the new farm i got permission on. It should be some good hunting but i will let you guys know what I find when i get home.

uncle odie
09-05-2009, 12:40 PM
We will have to get an alternate if he dosen't check in soon. There has been a few names thrown into the kitty, but any is OK with me. Bearboy suggested Buck Busters, but like i said , any is fine with me.

09-05-2009, 03:48 PM
No preference, buck busters sounds fine. If you guys I want I can probably come up with a picture signature with our names on it, etc. I've done it for the last couple teams, nothing fancy but it works.

09-05-2009, 04:35 PM
Thanks Ernie that will work just fine the BuckBusters has been voted by the majority so I'll let 45 know that we'll go woth that. I've already PM'd 45 and he knows we have a no show and after this weekend we'll see about an alternate. Thanks guy's. Good luck with the stands and camers. I'm still fishing some tourneys for the next few eeks so my stand time is limited. But after the boat goes into staorage look out :D Have a good weekend.

Good to see you showed up. Welcome to the team. I just checked my cameras and got the stands hung. I was happy with what I saw except for one picture. I got a picture of some guy that doesnt have permission to hunt where i do because I know for a fact that I am the only one with permission. Didnt get his face but as long as he stays away for deer season and nothing comes up missing i dont really care. He walked about 5 foot from my camera which is pretty much in the open so and he didnt take it which i am very thankful of because alot of stuff has gotten stolen out in that area. Other than that I seen the usual bucks the little non typical never showed his face in 2 weeks but he just popped up a couple times last month so i think he was just crusing. The big guy is hard horned now. I had 399 pictures in 2 weeks. Also got a real crazy looking doe. I dont know if she is getting he winter coat in or what but she looks wierd. Just figured i would share the pics with you guys.

David, thanks for checking in you had a little worried :) Glad to see you have some deer lined up. I think we will give other teams a run for thier money. Yeah BuckBusters is what's lookin good so we'll see when 45 has the time to add it to the team listing. Also thanks for the offer to hunt it's appreciated and I may take you up on the offer later on in the year when things settle down in my neck of the woods. Well guy's looks like we've got a complete team and ready to get it done. Have a good weekend what's left of it.

Kinda dead around here, hopefully everyones out scouting  Hey Ernie could you come up with a signature for the team? You seem to be pretty literate when it comes to that kinda stuff. Me I'm not that computer savy  Well a few more weeks and it's going to get started. Of course I'll be out of town that first few weeks but should be home the later part of October in time for the rut :D Hopefully it will be a good one this year. I plan on hunting for a bout a 10 days during the rut so we'll see how that works out. Take care.

09-10-2009, 07:03 PM
I have been trying to get most of my honeydo's done so i can go play when season starts. Got most of our stands up, but have 3 more to go. Should have them up this weekend. Bought me a new Summit Goliath, now i am going to see if i can get my big old tired butt up a tree. It will be good to be mobile in some of the areas we have to hunt.

I think the team spirit will increase when season starts and we will see a little more chatter, especially when some points start getting posted.

Thanks Enie, take your time. Odie good luck with the climber, but be careful!! I started using a ladder stand last year, it belonged to my buddy and he let me use it. I haven't hunted out of a stand in years and forgot how nice it was to see a long distance lol. Seeing deer come in from a distance instead of seeing them on top of you is a good thing :biggrin:

Im am getting the itch real bad. I went and took down both of my cameras last weekend though after finding out who the trespasser was. I was afraid with them knowing where they were they would come up missing . But I got all my stands hung up and I am ready to go come on Sept 26.

davideugene05

"J"
09-11-2009, 07:31 PM
Heck David I figured you'd get on stand a day early and wait it out till legal shooting time :) I'm debating if I should go out opening day or just wait I leave the next morning and with all I have on my plate adding a harvested deer to the mix would just add more things to the list of things to do. Oh the dilemma's

decisions, decisions, decisions, what to do. that is a tough one, you could always go out and sit and watch, and if the big one walks by i think my plate would run over. just a thought.

i am going out opening day but if it warm, which it prob will be, i won't shoot unless it has big headgear. anyway,it will be a good time to catch up on some quiet time.

any of you guys use the scent smoker?

"J"
09-12-2009, 08:59 PM
Yes I do and I highly recomend it. Have used it last season with incredible results. You won't regret it. David, we're pretty close if you want to try mine let me know and we can meet up and you can use it. Let me know.

atowngolfer
09-12-2009, 09:53 PM
I just bought one. If i dont like it for some reason im only out 40 bucks. I have only heard good things about it so i am going to give it a try. How long do the chips last and do you have to use their chips or can i get shaving from a wood chipper? I dont see why not. just a question i had about it. Thanks for the offer J but i am just going to go for it. Ya i just realized you are in Salem. My grandparents live in Sebring and both my parents grew up in Sebring.

"J"
09-12-2009, 10:02 PM
That's cool, I don't think you will be disappointed. The chips will last at least a season or two depending on you habits. Mine lasted a full season with my son and two of his buddeis coming over a couple of times a week doing thiers  They went a little over board with it but it worked for them also. So I've made a few converts :D. Good luck with it.

How close is Salem to Y-town? I am just over the border in Grove City PA. Man we got a pretty close team!

atowngolfer
09-12-2009, 10:59 PM
Salem is about 35 40 minutes from youngstown. How often do you smoke your clothes? and for how long do you smoke them

uncle odie
09-13-2009, 07:39 AM
i smoke my camo's every morning before i go to the stand. i will post a pic of my setup this afternoon, it will be easier then explaining it. but they do work!!

"J"
09-13-2009, 08:43 AM
Most people do what Odie does. I do it every other time usually but it also depends on the hunt before. I've taken one of those large plastic containers that you put stuff in with the lid that snaps in place sorta like a large tupperware container on steroids, and the drill a 1" to 1 1/2" hole to stick the spout of the smoker into and then just let it flow in and then turn the clothes after a little bit and do it again. When you remove the lid it will look like you're sending smoke signals  But it sure does a good job and is easy to do plus I just store all my hunting gear in it. And I mean everything the only thing not in it is my bow and arrows :D The first couple of times it was a little overwhelming (the smoke) but the body gets used to it
Salem is roughly 20 minutes south of Ytown. I drive through it, well around it 4 days a week on rte 11 heading up to the Ytown airport. Ernie Gove city is just down the Highway from us. Just has to have a passport to cross the line back into Ohio :yikes: :D David I have a Brother up on Turner road you close to that?

atowngolfer
09-13-2009, 09:19 AM
ya one of my really close friends lives on South Turner. I actually live in austintown if you know where that is at.

"J"
09-13-2009, 10:00 AM
Yep, I used to hunt N. Turner Rd. Spent a lot of time up in that area back in the 90's before that one developer bought it all and built the housing delevopments. Lot of deer still up theere just no access. Plus it was in the urban zone.

atowngolfer
09-13-2009, 10:17 AM
ya there are alot of deer out there. Most have gone onto meander for a place to get away from all the people. But i think alot of people are hunting in there now to. Just my opinion.

uncle odie
09-13-2009, 06:26 PM
here is what i use to smoke up. a canvas closure from Walmart with a x cut in the rear for the smoke to enter. (i cut mine a little high) when i get up in the morn i put on my coffee, go out in the garrage and start up my smoker, place it in the hole, go back in and get a cup of coffee and get ready. by the time i am ready to put on my camoe they are smoked up and ready. when i am done for the day, i place them back in the closure and repeat in the am. i hope this helps.

atowngolfer
09-13-2009, 07:00 PM
That is a good setup I was thinking about just getting a rubbermade container and cutting a hole in the side, fill it with smoke and put tape over the hole. I have read that on here somewhere. Do you smoke up when u get to the spot you are going to hunt to? I have 2 dogs and they ride in my jeep so i dont want my clothes smelling like dog. I am trying to pay more attention to my scent more than i ever have before so I have some questions.

uncle odie
09-13-2009, 07:04 PM
thanks J, i am not really organized, but i do all my hunting right here around the farm and i don't really have to be very mobile. hoping it might give some of the other guys some ideas. every little idea, example or bit of info helps.

i smoke up every morning, but i hunt right here on the farm so i don't really ride anywhere. i think some of the other guys on the OS site uses the rubbermaid containers to smoke their camos in and change when they get to the area they hunt which i think is a good idea. just ask all the questions you want and some one will give you an answer. i enjoy trying to help some of the less experienced hunters, not to say that i am an expert, but when i started hunting deer in 1972 hardly no one hunted them so i had no one to ask and i imagine J was in the same boat since he is not that much younger than me. we will help any way we can, am i right J?

"J"
09-13-2009, 07:42 PM
Couldn't have put it any better. When I started I hunted for years without seeing a deer while deer hunting, now when we were rabbit/pheasnt/quail hunting (yes you could hunt all three back then) we saw a lot of deer, usually with thier tails high. So we are now pretty spoiled to the point of if we don't see multiple deer in a day it's been a bad one. But any questions feel free to ask between the two of us we probably have 60+ years experiance  And David the way you want to do it is exactly the way I do it. Easy and quick.

I just went out to my hunting spot one more time to dump some more corn and finish making my shooting lanes. I am not stepping foot into the woods again until I have the bow in my hand. Yeah Odie DavidEugene checked in and Bearboy is lurking in the shadows, but he is always around just not to many posts. I think once season rolls around and he gets some time on stand we'll hear from him or his dad :yikes: Hey Bearboy you ready to drop that big one? Tell the old man to make sure you get the choice stand and not to put you in the one with all the does hanging around lol. Take care guys. Time for bed 0400 rolls around early.

I just got my scent smoker in the mail. I am kinda curious to see how it works, but I am going to wait until the night before season to try it out. Any tips on how to use it since it did not come with any directions.

"J"
09-16-2009, 05:38 PM
Put a couple of inches of the chips in, get a propane torch preferably with the quartz ignition (no matches/lighter required) and light it. Close the lid and start compressing the bellows slowly until the smoke starts pouring out then smoke away :yikes: And I won't be in the stand at 0400 maybe 0500 but not a minute earlier :D I've got some good stand sites this year and hopefully they'll pay off  Lots of sign and mast and a lot of deer trails intersecting. Gives me a warm fuzzy.

i just let mine burn out, i don't think i would pour water on them, but if you do make sure you dump them out so your smoker will dry.

Charlie, i am sure we can get together for a hunt this fall, we got a lot of stands set at this time, and i think it would be a good time. i am prob a liability to the team instead of an asset.

it's getting closer guys!!:woohoo1:

where do you go to school?? a good education is much more important these days than a deer. you will have your whole life ahead of you after you graduate. good luck this season but most of all good luck in school.

I go to school at Ohio State ATI in Wooster. It is my second and last year. It just sucks leaving my fiance an hour and a half away and only seeing her on weekend, when i go from living with her all summer. But like i said I gotta do what i gotta do. And hopefully the deer will fall on the weekend

I know i said i wasnt going back out to my spot to hunt but i made one last trip out to check everything over and found some dissapointing stuff. Usually the corn i dump is gone in about 2 or 3 days but there was still some corn left in both piles. I also found a pop bottle right by one of my stands that was shot with a shotgun and was not there before. I think it is the guy i got on my camera but not sure since i took the cameras down. Now they have just recently cut the corn field where i hunt and i dont know if the deer are going more out into the field to eat or if that guy did something to my corn piles. I know for a fact that bottle wasnt there before so it makes me wonder:confused:. On a good note i stopped at another farm where i have seen a LOT of deer at and got permission. I have a friend use to hunt it and would slaughter the deer. He doesnt hunt there anymore so i am going to see if he will take me out to show me some hot spots where to climb at. I have rabbit hunted it alot. It has a big corn field and some woods and a very very good bedding area. High grass and thick brush field, it is where we rabbit hunt and we jump deer up about every time. It also has a gas line that runs through the woods which i may hunt that after looking the place over toady. Tons of trails. But i am still going to try the place i know opening day and probably opening weekend. But if that doesnt produce maybe this place of my other place the following weekend.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune, but there is always someone out there whom likes to mess with other people. Is this land that you have permission to hunt or is it your land? If you know who it is, politely ask him not to disturb your stands or area which you are hunting, prob won't do any good but you can try. As for the corn on the ground, i would take a trash bag and pick it up. The guy sounds like he might be the type to take a leak in your corn piles. Sounds like you at least have a back up area to hunt. Good luck

atowngolfer
09-21-2009, 07:33 PM
This is not my land that i own but we do have the land to ourselves and the guy wouldnt tell us that and let someone hunt it. He is big into our church and we have been the only ones to hunt it for 4 years. I have an idea of who the guy is and he sneaks on from the property next door. If i catch him in my woods when im hunting im going to call the cops. I have already talked to the landowner and he said he is fine with that and he will press trespassing charges on him if he is caught.

lot of them getting wacked around here, like they are starting to run all ready, maybe we are going to have an early rut.

i'm going to take one of my grandsons out one day real soon. he is 14 and has never wanted to go, but he ask me earlier this summer if i would take him. he wants to go but he just wants to watch and doesnt know if he wants to see one killed. we have a couple buddy stands up so i will prob take him to on of those and just shoot with a Kodak digital. shoot one with those and no dragging.

Well i guess ill b the first to get our team some points then. I shot a doe and a button buck. Not sure how many points it gets us but i was out of the stand by 830 with both of them down within 75 yards of the stand. Both clean pass throughs. The doe was double lunged at 11 yards and the bb was a straight down shot and blew the heart to shreds and down through the guts, Shot them with the rage 3 blades and man the holes were crazy. I smoked up last night and this morning i was in the stand at 5 53, and shot the first one at 725 and the other at 8 05. This was my first bow kill and it was with a compound i got for christmas last year. I was very happy to say the least. I heard the first one drop about 40 yards. The smoker worked great both were down wind. The bb was smelling and looking around but never saw me. They were both calm and never spooked at all. So i guess i am a fan of the smoker. I am going to post the pictures so we can get our points. Why didnt you shoot the coyote J? Im guessing to far?

FYI atowngolfer. You are only aloud two deer per person on the team. Beings the button buck does not count for points as far as antlers go I would only enter the doe. Congrats by the way on the awesome morning. Austin will let you know about his morning here in a minute..

Nice work fellas.

Bearboy,

A little tip: you're not suppose to shoot one on the first morning! You gotta drag the season out a little bit longer so that you can miss some school to go hunting ;) Seriously though, congrats on a fine doe. Nothing like putting a nice mature doe down and just wait til you get your first steak or bowl of chili. Nothing quite like knowing that you are providing for the family! Hopefully you will get a chance at a buck!

Atown,

Nice double! Glad to see that your practice has paid off, keep up the good work!

In the mean time I'll be checking in to see the progress, I have a feeling good things are about to happen :D. So take it easy and enjoy it. I'm off to start packing. Later. PS. David the coyote and red fox we're well out of range and available licenses but those turkey I could count the feathers on thier tails :yikes: So can you say turkey tag when I get home :D When's it in anyways, I guess I'll have time to look that up while I'm gone also.

My dad called me at school last night and told me that his friend that hunts across the street from where i hunt seen my big buck on his side of the road last night. He was to far away for him to shoot, I have shown him pictures of him before so he knows it was this buck. raining here this morning. went out last nite, saw nothing from the stand, a lot of fresh tracks going thru but with this moon i think they are moving late in the evening and early in the morning. i did silhouette a nice buck in the bean field as i was leaving. he was about 15yds off the wood line in a bean field, i stood still about 50yds downwind of him and he just stood there looking at me. i finally started to walk up the edge of the bean field in the opposite direction, he jumped back into the wood line. i proceeded to move slowly for another 50 to 60yds, looked back and he was back out in the field browsing again. tells me my scent smoker is working.

Weekend report for Capt Ernie

Friday night: won Intermural Football game 28-0. We haven't given up a touchdown in three games and we're now 3-1 on the season. Application to hunting: some idiot rushing the quarterback ripped the sleeve on my under armour. Do you think the deer will mind if I'm wearing a shirt with only one long sleeve? At least my birthday and Christmas are not too far away!

Also bit the bullet and asked out a girl that I have been hanging out with a lot. I haven't dated anyone seriously in a bit over a year and it's time to settle down a bit LOL! Application to hunting: she's a city girl. But she lives in Pitt so it should not effect my hunting at all!

Sat: slept in, worked on a paper, went on a date with said girl, had a great time.

Sun: finishing my paper, not hunting, and I will probably only leave my desk for meals. Application for hunting: practicing sitting at one place for an extended period of time. I don't think I'll revert to a pee bottle though....

Good luck to you guys who are out hunting!

J, get over the flu yet? I haven't been out since Sat morn. Going out in the morn to a stand overlooking a field to see if any chasing yet. Sat morn i saw no deer but shot a yote trotting at 25yds. I think i hit him a little too far back. Had real bright red blood on the arrow and the blood trail was bright red kinda like a liver shot. I tracked for a while, lost blood, went back to the house for for a cup of coffee. Went back out with my son, picked up the trail again, found him laying on the creek bank but still alive. He was hurt bad but he ran, he was real weak but still got into the briers and brambles before i could get to him. Looked for him another hour or so, found no blood or signs of him, so very reluctantly gave up. I was very disappointed, would rather have had him instead of a deer.

I did get out this afternoon foe three hours and managed the cough untill about a half hour of shooting time then I got down and came home. im trying a new spot tonight. I have had the camera out at my usually good spot, also where i shot the 2 opening day. I have not got a single picture of a deer in 3 weeks, on on of the major trails through the woods. So i have been waterfowl hunting the past few weekends. But im gunna get out before i go back to school tonight. Its my first time using my climber so I am kind of nervous but this spot should be pretty good.

Well went out this morning and had the most deer sightings of the year. Had a
small spike go by and just had to play with him for a while lol. He came back to the grunt call three times
and then finally had enough and left for good. Twenty minutes later two doe came by just out of shooting range. Well at least my comfort zone. Watched them walk out of sight and gave them about 20 minutes and gave a rattle cycle and waited about 30 minutes later when I was just about to let loose with some more
rattling I see 2 more deer making thier way towards me. I get ready and at about
thirty yards they decide to change directions and head away from me well I whistled and the
lead doe( the biggest one ) stopped broadside and I let it fly. Just when you think you make the perfect shot up pops
a twig and deflected the arrow. Instead of hitting the vitals it hit the neck and dropped
like a rock. Talk about lucky. But you got to take the good with the bad. Someone was
looking out for me. Well I went to check it in and saw two very large bucks that were taken yesterday
evening and if some onewould be nice enough to post them for me like Deerhunt45 lol (I already emailed the pictures to him) you'll get to see how big they were. Very nce bucks with one having two split brow tines. Very impressive.

congrats to ya J, nice deer. went out this morn "AGAIN", saw alot of rut activity, saw two bucks chasing. had the 8 that i passed earlier this season in about 25yds and about 20mins later i had a wide short tined 10 come in from the left and rear. he was about 5 ft from my tree with his head up winding my scent rag, looked right at me for aprox 10 seconds, walked over towards the rag, sniffed, turned to his left and walked away. been seeing bunches of does, but have not taken any of them yet due to rut coming on. got a prime area and don't want to blow it shooting does. will start on the does after rut. good luck on the buck!!

J, been passing a bunch of small bucks but the big boys are still in the nocturnal mode, don't appear to be in full rut yet. i see a small buck chasing once in awhile but not the big ones. saw a dandy come out of the thicket along the creek in front of the house the other evening and it was right at dusk. hopefully the weather will cool down and turn them on. you been seeing much? well good luck to you and hunt safe.

Hey Odie. Been busy with work and other things. Haven't been out since I got my doe.
Going to Ravenna this Saturday. Bit it's antlerless only. So more
freezer meat hopefully. Works been keeping me pretty busy so I haven't had much stand time. Then with the
fiasco last Friday. Looks like my rabbit hunting is going to be not as
fun as I thought it would be. But I thing gin season is going to be doing it
for me this year. Too many pokers on the fire at work and home. You'll have that from time to time.
Good lick with the monsters down there.

had a buck tear up my Glendale buck target this morning while i was out hunting. i walked out the back door of the garage this morning and my target was still standing, when i got back in about 11:30 it was knocked over, the front legs are broken, and he has a big tine gauge in his rump.

anybody doing any good other then Austin?

Going to Ravenna in the morning but it's a antlerless hunt only. I'm looking at taking the week before gin season off but that's still up in the air. It's looking like gun/muzzleloader is when I might be harvesting a buck. Been a bad year for getting away from work. But I have faith in my teamates to pick up my slack :)

Like J sez Ernie, lot of time yet, besides, now days an education is much more important than a buck. After you graduate you will have all the time in the world to hunt. Concentrate on school and hunt when you have time and good luck on both.

The story is; Fri afternoon i got settled in my stand at 3:15pm, sat for about 15 min and saw a small buck running in the bean field looking for a doe. About 10 min later i saw a mature doe browsing thru the woods i was in. She came within 15yds, thought about taking her but decided not to. I don't like to bloody up the area if i know there are nice bucks around. Saw another doe and a decent 8 which i have already passed 2 other times. At 4:15 i heard a deer to my right walking in the leaves, he was about 25yds and a little to my rear, a got my bow in hand, stood up slowly, drew, settled the pin on him and let fly. I saw the knock disappear and thought it looked like a good hit. I watched him run 45 yds and hit the ground and never moved. I watched him for about 5 mins to make sure he did not get back up and sat back down and enjoyed the scenery for another 30 mins. Got down, went and recovered my deer. When i field dressed him i checked the heart and the Razorcap broadhead made a perfect hole thru the center of his heart. He was 1 of the 5 different bucks that i said i would take given the oppertunity.

Good deal. Hopefully I'll see a good one within the next few weeks. No shooters where I'm hunting so far. They're there just not showing themselves yet. But if they stay nocturnal then come gun season they'll be moving and I'll be waiting :-)

Anybody's kids do any good? I took my brother out yesterday morning and this morning. Yesterday didnt see anything and today had a doe sneak up on us and went behind some thick stuff before he could get a shot. She came through at about 750 and we gave her about 10 minutes and didnt see her, so we snuck up a cleared path and look up and here come people walking wearing orange. Yesterday at about 815 we had some people come through doing drives for their kids and then again today at 8. only 10 minutes after we saw the doe. It is pretty rediculous that these guys are to lazy to sit with their kids in the morning. My vision of hunting is sitting waiting for the deer. I have never done any driving. I know it can be productive, but come on at 8. for god sake that is only an hour after legal. they only care about themselves and dont care if they ruin other peoples hunts. both days they walked within 20 yards of us and just kept on walking. I mean at least wait until 10 or so to start that but o well we will b back out tonight somewhere else.

Took my 12 year old Grandson out this morning. He has never been hunting before and decided he wanted to try it. I gladly let him do a little practicing with my 870 20ga. Done rather well for his first time shooting slugs, he does allot of pellet gun shooting at his house so he is pretty much up on how to aim and hold the gun. I will have to admit, he wasn't too keen on getting up at 5:30 on the weekend. Anyway, we went out, setup but didn't see any deer within shooting range, (i don't think he quit knows what sitting still means if you know what i mean:whistle:) We are going back out this evening and try it again and maybe we can get one close enough for him to shoot. I don't know if he will take the shot or not but that will be his decision.

Cool, my buddies son was out both mornings I pushed for him yesterday and he saw a small buck and a decent size doe but no shots. Today I went rabbit hunting and they went deer hunting and we both blanked lol. My buddy missed two and I let a couple go a little to warm for
me. But the dog needed run. Penny is still on the disabled list for a couple of weeks bit
she was really ticked when we left her back at the house which is a good sign.

We went out again this evening and he got to find out how good a deer's eyesight is. We had a nice 8 walk out of the woods across a corner of the bean field about 75 yds away. He started to twist around to get into position and the buck caught him. I told him to sit real still and maybe the buck would relax. He sat still and the buck stomped a few times to try to get him to move, but Alex held his ground and sat still. After about 5 mins of this Alex made a little move and the game was over, white flag time. We saw 2 does and another smaller buck just as we were getting ready to leave. I was hoping the 8 would come into the 40yd range and present him with a good broadside shot, but he didn't. So we will try again next year.

J, ya know, around here we usually see more bucks during ML season when it is later like this year. They seem to herd up with the does and tolerate each other more. Back a few years ago when i killed the other drop tine 11 pt he was running with 5 does and 3 other real nice bucks, but it was 8 below and 6" of snow that morning when i left the house, sure was cold but it was worth it.
