What's happening guys. Name is Adam and I'm in Huron county. I'll be hunting in the side yard and am hoping to stick a doe on first day. I've had tag soup the last 2 years, so it's time to fill some tags and a freezer at our new place. Other than that it's public land only.
Any ideas on a team name? I just got home from being out of town all weekend so I haven't put in much thought about it, but up for anything. Best of luck this year and lets put the smack down on these other smucks:D

Glad to see we are all checked in. This is my first year in the contest. I know I'll fill a bunch of antlerless tags. As far as bucks go, I live by what some call the "wall rule". If its not big enough to go on the wall, it get's a pass. I'm still fairly confident I'll be able to contribute.

Ha ha sometimes life doesn't allow hunting or very much time at all for hunting....it's called priorites.:irked:
Fill those tags however you can boys, whether they have horns or not.
Any ideas on a name yet? Anyone have a pictures of what they're after this year? I don't have a camera (yet) nor have I been able to secure any private land to hunt except for the few acreas the new home is on. Hopefully they'll be around like they were late in the season last year.

Here are a few other ideas...
Buck Hammers (I don't shoot Remingtons, but its kinda catchy)
The Gutpilers
Just an FYI. I'm not much of an early seson hunter. I usually don't start until the weekend around Halloween. I may change that up this year.

I have been kinda running my butt off the last week or so too guys. I'm actually at my campgrounds right now in Loudonville. Just got back from the middle of nowhere in West Virginia for a family reunion. I borrowed my neighbors wireless cell card to check in. The next couple days I have calling hours & a funeral in Vermilion for an aunt. I'll try to check in as I can. If you guys settle on a name over the next couple days, anything is cool with me. I'm just looking forward to some stand time real soon.

Yep, same story here, very busy the past couple of weeks. Of all things, our work is actually moving into our new building which is twice the old size......I'm ready for some seat time.
Like the name....lets see some logos....I might have some time on Sunday to try and throw some things up here.
I'm not gonna lie, getting one tag filled this year will be a huge accomplishment. The last couple of years have had minimal hunting, with less than steller hunting land except the weekend in SE OH with 1023. Things have finally worked out and the new home will provide side yard hunting. Early season will most likely be tough with all the crops and acorns around, but the neighbors's are softening up...hopefully have a few acres to put a stand. Come on 9/26!

Well, it has been pretty quiet on our thread. I for one have been pretty busy with everything but hunting related stuff. I hope to get out this week & do some final shooting with the bow & get some scouting in also. I am actually no where near as ready as I would like to be for the season but I typically use the first couple weeks of the season to move around in the woods with my climber. All the properties I hunt get a bit of hunting pressure. This way I can kinda see how the deer will adjust their travel patterns to the human activity in the woods. This has worked out for me pretty well. How do all you guys go about the start of the season.

Was out scouting on Sunday. I don't usually hunt the early season, but have decided to try to fill my antlerless tags first this year. I'll be hunting Sat and Sun evenings this weekend. Lots of acorns on the ground. We'll see what happens.

I got out for about 3 hours this AM. Iheaded to the truck when it looked like the rain was about to set in. I guessed right on the money as it started to rain as I got to my truck. It was pretty windy & I didn't see a thing. It sure felt good to get out though. I'm planning on getting back out tomorrow afternoon after the rain clears.

I participated in the Akron Marathon Relay Saturday morning. Was pretty exhausted by early afternoon, but decided to go out anyway. I hit one of my set ups close to home on public ground. I had one doe sneak in behind me at 5:50. No shot opportunity. And then the skies opened up and put some serious rain down. Even though the "golden hour" was just starting, visibility was very poor and there were a few claps of thunder, so I decided to give in. I may try to get out one day after work this week.
No hunting today. Wife is at work, so I'm with the kids.

No go for me yesterday too. After a golf outing, a wedding reception and some square dancing (yes, I said square dancing, lol), there wasn't anytime left in the day.
Today brings chores around the home before the storm tomorrow, and hopefully some time to get the hunting clothes washed and smoked.
Keep the updates coming guys, and good luck when you're in the stand.

Got out Sunday afternoon for a couple hours. Saw 2 doe but to far out for a shot. Yesterday I headed out at the last minute in quite a rush. Headed to the woods with my climber at 5:15. Didn't have time to shower or smoke up but the wind was going to be perfect for the tree I wanted to head for. Low & behold the when I got up in the tree the wind was doing just the opposite of what it was supposed to be doing. I ended up seeing 4 doe with 1 being huge. When I saw the body I thought it was a good buck for sure but no horns. At 7:15 I had 2 doe sneak up behind me directly down wind. She didn't really spook but at 5 yards realized something wasn't quite right. She just backed up back into the big clearcut thicket she was sneaking out of. No shot as she was directly behind me. I hope to get out this weekend a couple times.

Went to our camper at Mohican in Ashland county over the weekend. Was only able to get out Saturday morning. Went to a spot I have hunted from quite a few times & even took a doe from 2 years ago. All I saw was 4 antlerless passing by. Problem was they were freakin horses. It seems they decided to put in a new bridle trail about 120 yards up a hillside from this area I liked to hunt. Oh well the season is still young.

Decided to head out this evening after work. Hit the same spot as opening day. Had a doe and a small 8 point work behind me. Buck was broadside at about 45 yards. Not a shooter but good to see activity near my set up. The next time I hit this spot I'm going to try a tree about 20 yards deeper and rotate it to the east. I'm sure I can tag a doe from this site.

Last night at 5 pm I dropped off my buddy Mark and his son Cole at their Buddy Stand that overlooks a bean field. I headed down the road a mile to my stand that overlooks corn. No action till about 6:30 or so the Blue Jays alerted me to some deer about 100 yards away. A doe and a fawn came in behind me from the corn and began eating acorns. As I turned in the stand the mud on my boots started falling to the ground. The deer didn'y pay too much attention to it though. Eventually Momma got in a small shooting window I had at a whopping 5 yards. I double lunged her with my Slick Trick and watched her run 60 yards and rear up on her back legs and then expire. When I texted Mark to let him know he stood up to grab his phone and noticed a small 8 point walking along the edge towards him and Cole. Cole said he wanted to shoot it so Mark gave him the go ahead. Cole hit him back through the rear legs. Luckily, the deer was disabled enough for them to get down and finish him off quickly. This was the same deer that Cole grazed using his new compound 2 weeks ago. He was mature enough to admit he wasn't steady enough yet to calm his nerves and use the compound. He was still disgusted with his shot placement on this deer, but we just told him to be proud that he got it and KEEP PRACTICING.

Congrats on the kills guys. I haven't been getting out as much as I would like but I've had family obligations on the weekends. This weekend I'm heading to Mohican to close up & winterize the camper. I don't know if I'll get a chance to get out down there or not. Worst case I should get out Sunday evening. I just got permission to hunt a 150 acre farm in Geauga county. Sorry, been a little absent lately guys. Got out on Saturday & saw 3 bucks in bow range but none worth shooting. I'm with Schu & 5cent on the acorns. Up here in the far northeast they are everywhere. I think that actually makes the deer a little harder to hunt as they don't concentrate on the few trees that are producing. Lung Buster, if you do find a tree that is producing though, you may have to buy another freezer. I guess that could be one way to look at it. Hopefully I can start getting out a little more. I'd like to tag a doe here real soon. Good luck to everyone who gets out this week.

I filled a doe tag this morning. I had 3 small does come past me 1st thing in the AM. I let them walk on by hoping momma was following them up. Momma must have run them off as nothing else showed. They headed up by a cornfield 30 yards from my stand. They went into a thicket along the field & I figured they bedded down as they never went into the field. After about 10 minutes I decided to release some spent coffee from my system. Thank goodness it was real windy & loud because about the time I finished I looked over & there was 1 of those does feeding at 15 yards. I then saw the other 2 heading toward me & proceeded to start feeding at 20 yards. After a few minutes I decided a little meat was better than no meat. One of the 2 at 20 yards stood up on it's back legs & smacked the other one on the head 3 or 4 times for feeding to close to her I guess. Thats when I decided she was the lucky winner of a Rage through the cage. A heart shot at 20 yards & she ran 40 yards & piled up.

Well, I'm tagged out for the contest. Yesterday AM I decided to hunt a classic funnel on the edge of my gun club property as the wind was perfect for it. I don't usually hunt the area as it is on the edge of our property butting up to a wide open camp & some other private properties that don't seem to care for people entering thier property. I said heck with it as the last buck tag I filled was about 3 years ago in that same area. While on stand I heard some footsteps heading toward me & got stood up with bow in hand. I couldn't see anything coming but was pretty sure it was a deer. after a few minutes I relaxed as nothing showed suddenly I heard the footsteps coming again & a good doe came trotting by me at 20 yards. I could tell by her mouth hanging open & tongue hanging out that she was tired & being chased so I let her pass. After a few minutes I starting 2nd guessing myself on that decision as nothing showed up. Then I heard a snap come from the direction she had come from & saw a large body coming through the woods. As he came closer I got drawn & knew I had to make a quick decision. He looked like an 8 point & as he stepped into my shooting lane at 25 yds. I bleated at him. Instead of stopping & looking toward me he stopped & looked straight up at me. His spread was outside his ears & he was a big mature deer so I decided he was the one. I put my 25 yd pin on his heart & let the arrow fly. Thank goodness I aimed low at the heart as on release he jumped string & I spined him & he dropped on the spot. He only had 3 points on the 1 side & ended up being a 7 point but he's a big mature deer & will put a lot of meat in the freezer for my family. I have been way to selective the last few years with my buck tags & have ended up eating them instead of meat. This year I decided if a buck was mature & spread outside his ears I would take him. I'm glad I stuck to my guns & filled my buck tag this year. There are only so many recipes for tag soup ;). Good luck to everyone as rut winds down & I hope you all tag a monster.

Had a 140" 10 point come in at 30 yards and angle away from me offering only a marginal shot that I passed up. I haven't had alot of time in the woods but I have been seeing alot of mature bucks in my area. I have benn putting in 70 hour weeks for a month now. I do have Sunday off and then I'll be going back to 11:30-8pm shifts, so I'll have alot more time to get out in the next few weeks. Good shooting guys.

Well guys, I had a great weekend, but came home empty handed. Hunted Saturday evening and Sunday morning in Belmont County. On Saturday, I saw 4 bucks and 4 does but they were way out in the pasture. The one buck was a dandy, easily 140". Hunted the same stand the next morning and had deer running all over from first light. A doe in heat led 3 bucks off the far hill down towards my stand. I believe the last buck was the same 140" from the evening before. Unfortunately, the doe circled the patch of woods I was in, leading the boys away.:irked: I had tried my grunt and bleat can. The big boy would look in my direction, but headed off after the real thing. After he headed off I ranged where he was standing. 52 yards. I had guessed 60 and was glad I hadn't tried a long shot. A while later this group showed back up with another buck in tow. Now they were 200+ yards away in the pasture, but it was fun to watch. The 2 littlest bucks were sparing with each other, while the big boy hounded the doe. He did chase off the other decent buck at one point. The big buck and the doe eventually headed over the hill and were out of site. Several other small bucks and does popped in and out of view throughout the morning. At one point I had 5 small bucks mingling through the thickets surrounding my stand. Very entertaining. At 11 o'clock 5 deer came racing down the hill towards me. One being a nice buck. It all happened so fast I wasn’t sure if it was the same one from earlier. But again the veered east and were gone without a shot opportunity. At 12:30 I had to head home, but it was very exciting to say the least.

Sounds like a great hunt 5cent. That's what I love about hunting the rut. You just never know what you're going to see in the woods. Some of my most memorable hunts during the rut were ones I didn't even get a shot off. I just like watching the deer reacting to each other at this time of year. Keep at it, it sounds like you're in a good area & eventually the deer will make the mistake of coming past you.

Congrats to everyone that has filled tags. I have had no luck. This is the worst year I've had in 18 yrs. The deer around here are gone!! I have hunted hard this season and have only seen 1 doe and a few 1.5 yr old bucks. It has to be the lack of acorns or everyone on all the leased land around here has been killing extra does the last couple of years. The state may want to rethink their bag limits next year, atleast in hocking county  It looks like I will have to wait on the slobs to run me something during gun week :irked: Sorry about the rant but this sucks!!!!!! I have lowered my standards and if given the chance one of them 1.5 yr olds is going to hit the dirt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Then im going to pack it up, enjoy the holidays with my family and hope for a better season next year!!!!
Good luck to those still after them!!!

Good job Schu & Lung Buster. Way to manage the deer herd. Good luck to everyone with the guns this week. Be safe out there. I am going to finally try out my Taurus Raging Bull pistol for gun week. I bought it 2 years ago & do to the price of ammo & waiting to get a scope I had never shot it. I finally found some ammo reasonably priced at cabelas. 454 Casull is just to damn expensive. I went through 3 boxes getting it sighted in & practicing with the iron sights. I was hoping to tag one today for my birthday but it didn't happen. Oh well, I've got all week to score with it. It is the last weapon left that I haven't taken a deer with in Ohio. Wish me luck.

Good luck to you & your brother 5cent. I'm pretty sure 1023 will get you on some deer. All you gotta do then is kill it. Let us know hoe things go down there. Also, you are right. This 454 Casull is a blast to shoot. It has some kick but not as much as you would think. Taurus did a great job with the rubber grips as well as balancing the gun & porting it. Because of the porting the nose of the barrel stays down nice & it just kicks straight back into your hand. Good for a follow up shot if needed.

LOL, well, Jesse left me thin last year I was down during bow....I did see a deer, but I was respecting his wishes and passed up a small buck....not so this time...just talked to him tonight and got permission for anything that is walking meat.
It's just going to be nice getting back in the big woods. Not hear a car, a dog bark, neighbors radio, neighbor spreading lime on field, and away from my wife. I used to hunt every year in Warren, PA at my uncles cabin in the Allegahny (sp?) and that was true deer camp, gun drawning every Saturday. My brother's only been hunting for 4 years and it's great getting out with him. He killed his first doe 2 years ago in ML season and is hooked:D
I look foward to seeing some carnage from that 454:coolgleamA:

Sorry to disappoint you on the 454 carnage 5cent. I didn't even get off a shot this week. I had decided that due to limited practice & using the iron sight I would limit my shots to 40 yards. I seamed good out to 40 but 50 yards got a little sporadic. I did stalk up on 2 doe walking around in a bedding area. Due to the fact I didn't like the shot & potential background of the shot I passed. You see I was at my rod & gun club stalking behind our member permanent camsites. All of a sudden I spot 2 doe only 25 yards from me in a small thicket. The thicket sits up on a little knoll & the shot angle seamed like it was going back toward some member's campers so I elected to pass. I did talk to 3 of the members who had campers there & they said " dummy, you should have shot. I can patch the holes." I will tell you that stalking with a 7 or 8 pound pistol beats the hell out of stalking with a slug gun. Also, pushing through thick stuff was a breeze. I will look to put a scope on it I think & practice some more to be ready for next year. I don't know if I'll use it for the 2 day season or not. Depends if I drop a deer with the bow betweem now & then. I hunted the WNF in New Metamoris a couple years back for gun & muzzleloader seasons. That big woods experience is great. Where I hunt in Lake county it is impossible to get that kind of silence. Lake county is the smallest county in the state but the 3rd most populous. Add to the fact that Lake Metroparks owns most of the wooded property & doesn't allow hunting you are always hearing cars, dogs, radios, people talking & I even mistook a neighbor passing wind once for a buck grunt :). New Metamoris is about 30 miles north on rt.7 from Marietta. I don't know if Jesse's place is anywhere near that but I love it down there.

Well team, my gun season was pretty much a total bust. I hunted in Belmont and Knox counties. Did some treestand hunting as well as some drives later in the week. The results were pathetic. The best buck I saw was on Monday, but by the time he presented a clear shot he was 218 yards away.:irked: Needless to say, I did not shoot. I'm really questioning my decisions on where and how I hunted this year. I plan to be back in Belmont for the bonus weekend. And I'll be out there for black powder, if need be. However, I feel like many others who have been posting about the potential disappointment of eating tag soup...again.

Well guys, I hunted all day saturday and saw 9 deer. Two small bucks and seven does. Could have shot most of them, but never pulled the trigger. One of the bucks was tending a doe. He bedded about 25 yards from my stand. Once the doe started to move off, he was after her again. Now here's the kicker......I get loaded up and drive back to my mom's house. I pull in the driveway and start heading up towards the house. And there stands a big tenpoint in between a couple of pines at the top of the driveway. :irked:

Well boys...you have surely outdone yourself for this team. Nice job to all of you for getting us to #7 so far. I wish I could have helped:nono: 3 years in a row of tag soup.....
The days in the stand were definitely numbered for me with the company moving. The trip to SE Ohio during extended gun season was a great time, but didn't yield one shot. I've got 200lbs of corn, 25 yrds out the back door that the squirrels and birds have destroyed.....but haven't seen a deer at in 1.5months.
Very very different season of hunting this year and I am finding that I just don't get into it as much now that I have moved away from Athens. Hopefully next year finds me better and I again can taste those sweet sweet flavors of backstrap!

I'll go ahead submit my story of my buck I got. I honestly was too embarrassed to begin with, but what the hell. The last day of ML I was hunting my home area in southern Wood County. I was hunting with some friends and my 2 nephews. We really weren't seeing any deer everywhere we pushed. At about 2:30 most of my group decided to head back to Hancock Co. I decided to stay there with my buddy mark, his son Cole(YoungWood) and my 2 nephews. We had 1 more small section to push and it paid off. There were 15 deer we pushed out, 8 being bucks. 3 of the bucks in the group were better than 130", with one being a main fraim 10 that was pushing 150". At first we got no shots and they ran across the road to another section that had hunters in it. So we set up and waited. Sure enough the deer were shot at and came back our way at about 4:45pm. When they got near the road separating thee properties the local "Road Warriors" were all over them and managed to split the herd in 3 groups using their vehicles. The smallest group was just 2 bucks. 1 "8 point", and a 9 point that was roughly 130". These 2 ended up in a small 1 acre thicket that we just pushed a couple hours previously. With time quickly running out I called everyone else and told them where to set up as I ran across the field towards the thicket to push these 2 deer out. 200 yards away the jumped and ran right to my nephew T-bone and he missed. They turned tail and ran right back to the end of the thicket and disappeared along the thicket and creek. With little time left I just bullrushed the thicket and seen 1 bust out the side. He was roughly a 100 yards out running full bore and I led him 4' and still missed behind him. I don't know why, but I reloaded and walked around the thicket to leave thinking that the other buck had busted the other way. I round the corner and see my nephew pointing. Sure enough, this other buck jumps up about 100 yards down the creek and I pulled up quickly and fired. I seen him stumble a bit and disappear into the thicket. I ran the long way around to the other side to see him stumbling and falling repeatedly. He died before I
go to him. I was severely disappointed and embarrassed when I walked up to him to see he was only a 6 point, and not 1 of the bigger bucks of the group. The pics dont show how much main beam length and height they had. I was totally pissed he didn't grow out to be an 8 point. I know he's atleast 3.5 years old. We've compared his skull mount to a bunch of 2.5 year olds laying around and it's alot bigger. The one positive of the whole situation is i cleaned my last couple deer and donated basically all the meat to some needy folks in my area. I always preach about knowing the size of the deer your aiming at and this time I just assumed it was 1 of the shooters. I think with the time running out and everything getting frantic, I just lost my wits a little.
I had my little buddy YoungWood upload the picture into the photo Gallery if someone wants to post in here for me.

Yea, go ahead and post him up. FWIW, I started a new job at a grain elevator in September that all but eliminated almost all my bowseason after mid October. I did connect on 2 archery does, 1 doe during extra gun weekend, and this buck. I passed on atleast 25 bucks ranging from spikes to 120". I seen a handful of nice shooters that were 125" or better out on hunts during bow and gun. For the circumstances put in front of me, I still had a real good season and helped some families out that needed it
