View Full Version : How do deer react to turkey calls?

Just a random thought prompted this question: Has anybody ever had eyes on a deer while they were turkey calling? How do deer react? Do they pay any attention? If you were on stand hunting deer, would it be ok to practice your turkey calling? (Thought it might be a good way to pass time and kill two birds with one stone, so to speak:idea:...but don't wanna practice if it'll spook the deer)

From what I saw this past spring, I dodn't think deer pay much attention to turkey calls, or turkey for that matter. Me and my hunting had 3 deer within 10 yds of us this spring and when we called they didn't even look up. One of the deer walked with 2 feet of our decoys (2 hens and a jake) and never even gave them a glance.

I'm not sure if this is normal, so I would try to get some more input. This is just what I saw this spring and it was my first year turkey hunting.

I will also add that 2 years ago, I arrowed a nice 8 pt that came through not 10 minutes after a flock of turkeys flew up and roosted in the trees 25 yds from me.

I have never see one spook to a turkey call.. I've had deer come into my setup many times.. I've watched them in the woods 40-100 yards away while i was calling.. They never seamed to care...

I have always heard that deer actually are settled by turkey in the area knowing that there is no danger near. Not sure how true it is but I know that in the area I hunt there are a lot of turkey. One of my stand locations are real close (maybe 15 yards) from a tree that usually has turkeys roosted. They come off of roost shortly after first light and the deer never seem to mind (it has caught me off guard several times). I wish they would give me a warning next time.

I will actually use a turkey call to try and fool deer on the way to one of my stands. It is probably to close to a bedding area and I've spooked deer in the past, so I started clucking on a turkey call while walking to the stand. It seems to work.

I have heard that deer trust the vision of a turkey to sense danger and turkey trust the deer because of their hearing and sense of smell.

I've had deer simply look causally over toward my turkey calling. They seemed not to care about the calling. However, I've had deer be curious about my decoys and even sniff, stomp and snort at them.

Great idea about making turkey calls when walking to a deer stand! Thanks.
