The background for this is my soon to be 12 yo daughter has a mossberg 500 bantam with cantilevered rifled barrel/scoped. Looking for a light recoiling slug - sabot or traditional for her. I bought a box of low recoil 20 gauge buckhammers but after reading the box 1275 fps/ 7/8 ounce.... wonder if they'd recoil as hard as a 5/8 or 1/2 ounce going 1700 fps? any input or experience would be greatly appreciated. I did notice that winchester bri sabots are 5/8 1400fps but I had a bad experience with those in 12 gauge (needle hole wound) someone suggested good ole copper solid 20 gauge sabots 5/8 @ 1500

My wife shoots the copper soilds. They have a pretty low recoil.

I started my daughter at 12 with a 20 ga 870 youth model. I used the Winchester sabots.

She shot 22s a lot and I had her dry fire the slug gun a bunch just to get her used to the trigger. I only had her shoot a few rounds to be sure the gun shoot to her point of aim.

I know this isn't answering your questions on the slugs but have you thought at all of getting the barrel ported? I know someone who had this done a few years back on their slug gun and swears by it. I also have heard of people using recoil pads to reduce the kick. I actually just bought one for my son but haven't had the chance to try it out yet.

it's actually ported already! and has a recoil pad but I think a limbsaver pad would be a big improvement.

update, brenneke 20 gauge K.O. slugs are winning 1450 fps 3/4 ounce one hole clusters at 50 yards. 3" group at 100, lightest perceived recoil... and only $5 a box of 5.
