Nice to see more and more reports of bears in the area. Sad to know this one will no longer be contributing to a sustainable bear population in NE Ohio.

Teen Driver Crashes Into Black Bear

FOX8.com Staff Writer

http://www.fox8.com/media/photo/2009-08/48760333.jpg The Ohio State Highway Patrol says a black bear, weighing an estimated 250 pounds, was killed in a traffic accident in Stark County after being struck by a 17-year-old motorist. (August 20, 2009)

CANTON, Ohio - Officers with the Canton post of the Ohio Highway Patrol are investigating a single-vehicle crash involving a black bear that occurred Wednesday night in Stark County, Fox 8 News reports.

The unlikely accident happened at approximately 9:54 p.m. on Beeson Street in Marlboro Township.

The 17-year-old motorist was driving a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am when the vehicle struck a black bear that had darted onto the roadway in front of him. The driver was heading eastbound on Beeson Street just west of Reeder Avenue.

The teenager was not injured. However, the black bear was killed as a result of the crash.

The bear, which was released to an officer from the Ohio Division of Wildlife, is believed to have weighed about 250 pounds.

According to an officer with the Marlboro Township Police Department, people had been calling in reports of a black bear in the area for the past few days.

Per the ODNR a year ago, before the guy east of Columbus shot one... "There are no such thing as black bears in Ohio.. Maybe you saw a fairy, or bigfoot HAHAHA and hang up...... "

Every year the local news reports on confirmed bear sightings in this area.

I posted some photos taken of a bear in the city of Canfield in this thread. Photos came from a city cop so I know they are real.

Was reading an article in the July/Aug edition of Ohio game and fish and it detailed the ODNRs monitoring of black bears in Ohio. It states that the ODNR has been keeping records of bear sightings since 1993. It goes on to say that sightings have been confirmed in 46 of Ohio's 88 counties. Last year, 105 sightings were filed in 21 Ohio counties with 38 sightings confirmed. 2002 had a record 165 sightings reported.

This is about 20 minutes from me. My little bro and I go walk the woods behind my parents house. A few weeks ago we found some big prints in the mud that kind of looked like bear prints. i don't know if it was or not, but there sure has been a lot of bear talk around here lately!

10 minutes from me. A family friend of ours down in Navarre had one on his property last year. He would see it from time to time but it has disappeared this year. I saw pictures and tracks at his house, they have several acres that are surrounded by much larger farms. It makes sense when you think about it, PA and WV aren't far away from these areas. I hope bears make a comeback in OH, it would be a great to be able to add such a great predator to our seasons. Conservation is showing us just how great things can be. too bad a car claimed this one, but at least it shows people, including the ODNR that Ohio bears do exist...

A few years back, the neighbor behind us snapped a few pics of a sow with cubs around their pond. I found scat a week later I am almost positive belonged to a bear. They have seen them in Marietta and in Williamstown, WV just across the river from Marietta. Hell, gf319804 (Greg) has a good story about one too! The claw marks are still on the hood of his wifes car!!! :yikes:
