Pennsylvania Black Bear Help

Hello everyone,

I'm getting ready for a Black Bear hunt in Pennsylvania in 2010 and I need hints on how to hunt these bears without bait.

The plan right now is arrive to the cabin early and scout, try to find where they are feeding and set up a ground blind along the path. It is just my grandpa and I so driving bears won't work.

Hunt Grassy powerlines or long clearings if possable. The further you can see, the more area you can acount for. Dont dwell on just one spot as bear are good about patterning you as you come and go.

Here's a little more info. The cabin is in the area around Allegheny Nation Forest. Its all woods with a few logging roads. And maybe a corn field or two in the valleys

Most bear that are taken in PA are with drives through the thickest , nastiest cover you can find. You can always hope that someone runs one to you but I would look for an oak ridge near thick cover, mountain laurel. Bear will feed on acorns pretty hard in the mountains and the cornfields could be an option too, if you have access. Good Luck

if your not doing drives it will be tough no matter where you are.the area your hunting is a big woods area and has a good number of bears so your chances might be decent, but no more than decent since your just sitting, like these guys said, set up on acorns or if there is corn ask the farmers if they have seen bears. if your just going to sit, set up by a swamp and near an area where other groups may drive one out to you. my group of 17 guys here in northeast PA only do drives and we average 2.8 bears a year over 25 years.
there is a lot of bears a around in my area this year, last year our group got 4 and this year we are seeing more bear sign then last year so maybe youll get one man. good luck and have fun.
