While chattin with HunTER06 last nite, I was thinking about the armed forces guys like him on this forum who are not able to participate in that most glorious of all activities (deer hunting) due to their service away from home. All they can do is "think" about deer.

So I was thinking - we should put together a concerted effort to send them and their buddies "deer jerky care packages" so that they can taste a little bit of the season.

So...some questions...
1) you boys in the service - would you want it?
2) Ohio hunters - would you kick in some jerky? Go out of your way to make extra?

Just a thought...let me know if you think it has merit or would be willing to participate. I know I'm going to do a little something, but my jerky efforts have been less than gourmet to this point:whistle:

I have 10 pounds of deer jerky I will donate. You just tell me where to send it...

*I'll send an extra $10 with it to help with shipping.*

As a veteran, all I can say is great idea, I will be more than happy to donate some jerky. I believe we will probably need some people that are willing to donate some money for shipping if they would be willing as well. Depending on where they are stationed we may need to get it packed in dry ice to help get it there in good condition. Send me a PM with details once they are all settled on. I will also keep an eye on this thread.

Great idea guys. I know if I was stationed in a foreign land I would really miss the opportunity to hunt.

I got a stack of magazines to send too if we want to do that as well. I also have another idea...

Once we get the teams drawn for the hunting contest, we will know how many guys are on a team. I'll buy 4, 5, or 6 flags and we will get those in a box and send them over seas somewhere to someone from OS, or someone connected to a member of OS, and get a whole groups of guys to sign the flags. Members of the winning team, each get a flag. I think that would be a cool prize...

AHHHH you may want to rethink the flag signing idea  The person (if they have access to military aircraft) can have them flown on combat missions and have a certificate of authanticity signed by the crew who flew it.

That would be ever sweeter!!! :coolgleamA:

Or make the military member and honorary member of your OS.com hunting team and they receive free default points (ie. team average) while serving overseas. At least they will be able to participate on a team event via the vitural internet and not miss out this season.

I flew a few flags for friends during my Iraq tour. During my squadron days our pilots used to fly them for people.

Great ideal, but one issue you might have is shipping meat overseas. I had a few boxes make it to Iraq, but a friend of mine couldn't mail any to Italy.

Im not sure if we can have meat sent or not....we dont have a set address at the moment but when we get one I will check on it.

I can say this for sure, if you guys go out of the way to send deer jerky to some of us ohio boys in afghanistan, I would be more than happy to have some flags signed. Ill even take pictures of the flags being flown, deer jerky in hand!!

This evening, went to the Army website and sent the following email to the Army Gift Program Coordinator - We'll see what they come back with...

An online group of outdoor sportsmen (particularly deer hunters) from Ohio would like to send gift packages to sportsmen who are currently deployed overseas and will not be home to participate during the hunting season. Our idea is to send "care packages" containing hunting magazines and vacuum-packed venision jerky to service members who would normally deer hunt, in order to give them a little taste of home. Our online forum has members stationed in Afghanistan, Germany, and Italy, and probably others in Iraq as well. Our members are also serving in the Air Force and Marines.
All of the goods will be donated, and we will bear the cost of postage.
With all of that in mind, I have a few questions:
1) Are there any restrictions against sending meat products to certain areas? (This would be non-perishable, vacuum-packed, much like the beef jerky you purchase at any retailer.)
2) Is there a way to reach out to other deployed sportsmen who would appreciate such a care package?
3) Can you provide me with any information or instructions as to mailing/shipping procedures and regulations?
Your assistance in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,

Awesome! This is a great idea. I am in. I think as long as they are vacuum sealed it would work. What is the difference between sending this and a SlimJim (other than this is better)? Too many people have forgotten about our soldiers with all the other crap our government keeps stirring up on the home front. I haven't forgotten them and want to send a huge thanks to all those serving and checking out this forum.

Let's git-r-dun! My son is headed back to Iraq in December. I know all the troops enjoy getting packages from "home" regardless what is inside.
Jerky is always on my son's list though :coolgleamA:

We all should have some jerk done by December so perhaps we can send Christmas packages.

I agree.. My dog tags are hanging in my truck from my mirror, and they will stay there until our boys come home.

It serves as an everyday reminder to me about them and what they are doing.

A little heads up about what you can and can't do to a Flag. Pay particular attention to Para g.

§176. Respect for flag
No disrespect should be shown to the flag of the United States of America; the flag should not be dipped to any person or thing. Regimental colors, State flags, and organization or institutional flags are to be dipped as a mark of honor.
(a) The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.
(b) The flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise.
(c) The flag should never be carried flat or horizontally, but always aloft and free.
(d) The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery. It should never be festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free. Bunting of blue, white, and red, always arranged with the blue above, the white in the middle, and the red below, should be used for covering a speaker's desk, draping the front of the platform, and for decoration in general.
(e) The flag should never be fastened, displayed, used, or stored in such a manner as to permit it to be easily torn, soiled, or damaged in any way.
(f) The flag should never be used as a covering for a ceiling.
(g) The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature.
(h) The flag should never be used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, carrying, or delivering anything.
(i) The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever. It should not be embroidered on such articles as cushions or handkerchiefs and the like, printed or otherwise impressed on paper napkins or boxes or anything that is designed for temporary use and discard. Advertising signs should not be fastened to a staff or halyard from which the flag is flown.
(j) No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform. However, a flag patch may be affixed to the uniform of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations. The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing. Therefore, the lapel flag pin being a replica, should be worn on the left lapel near the heart.
(k) The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.

We could send Ohio State Buckeye flags....

Army sent back email with links to postal website and instructions...haven't had time to drill down completely on it but it appears that PORK is the only restriction - we'll have to have 100% venison....but I need to completely verify...so...now we gotta focus on getting addresses to send to. PM me if you have a serviceman's address. And guys stateside who can't hunt...anybody serving...

Round up your old magazines and fire up the dehydrators....

I am all for doing what I can to make our soliders forget, even if it is for a few seconds, the things they have to endure for our freedoms. To this day, I have a feeling of guilt that I never entered the armed forces and it is because of that feeling of guilt, that I want to do what I can as a civilian to make a difference. I just got off the phone with a rep from Operation Injured Solider and it looks like they will be the charitable organization for our bow shoot next year. I have some great ideas in the works and if I can pull them all together, there will be a few of our vets enjoying a guided hunt in Ohio this year courtesy of our Pro-Staff and an outfitter to be named later. I will forever be endebted to those that have served, are serving, and those that will serve. So long as I have the ability and the platform to make a difference, you can bet I will be doing my part...

Dannmann801 - Let us know once we are ready to start shipping. A couple questions/suggesstions.

Would it be easier to send all magazines and jerky to you and you will ship to troops or will it be easier if you supply those that want to participate an address of servicemen and we ship directly to them?

I am good with it either way just let me know once you have some addresses and I will start boxing some stuff up.

Thanks for getting this started.

Sincerely,

Seems as though the shipping restrictions I've found to this point are Pork and Porn. No pork, no porn. (talk about these guys making sacrifices...)

I went to the post office to check out their "flat rate boxes" and found that the medium size box is perfect for shipping magazines and plenty of room for jerky or whatever. The inside dimension are 8.50" wide x 11.00" long x 5.75" high - plenty of room. The flat rate for one of these boxes is $10.35 to any place in the US, and the postal clerk told me that APO boxes (military addresses) qualify for the same rate.

I've sent PM's to J, Thunderflight, and Hunter06 asking them to send me addresses so I can test this. If anyone else knows the address of a servicemember abroad, please PM me. If the flat rate boxes work the way I think, then anybody can send their own jerky and 'zines. If someone wants to donate a larger amount and doesn't want to bear the cost of shipping, I'll help with the arrangements.

Bowhunter, I do need jerky and magazines. If yer still in, PM me.

Well, thanks to Jesse's generosity (he supplied the jerky) and Thunderflight's help (he gave me a couple of addresses to try) our first 3 parcels of Deer Jerky are headed overseas. I used the medium flat-rate boxes for $10.35 ea and it was easy, no hassle.

Now we wait. When Thunder's guys report back and my coworker's nephew let's us know how long it takes and that everything went smooth, we'll be good. In the meantime, if you can get an address for someone overseas, let me know so we can put together a list.

I'll write more soon.
