View Full Version : 410 lever action for deer hunting?

Been thinking about something and it all came together this morning! Marlin and Winchester both make a lever action for the 2.5” 410 shotshell. Here in Ohio and other states you can only hunt deer with a shotgun, muzzleloader or handgun. I have been thinking about getting one of these lever actions for deer hunting. At least with a lever action 410 it would look like a rifle. The more I thought about it the more ideas I could come up with. Like getting a rifled barrel put on it, loading shells with a .45 cal. jacketed bullets using a roll crimp. Then it hit me this morning. Dillon could make a shell plate and dies so you could load 2.5” 410 shells on their RL 550 B! I am sure it could be done. There are not enough stages to load a shot shell. But if you were loading a slug and slipping the plastic sabot on the bottom of the .45 slug before you seat it. This would cut out one stage.
1. size deprime and reprime.
2. drop the powder.
3. seat the bullet with wad or sabot attached.
4. roll crimp.

What do you guys think? This could all most be equivalent to a .45 Long Colt lever
action.

I sent a copy of this to Dillon this morning. We will see what they have to say.?

Its not a bad idea, you can probably work up some hot loads. How do you plan to attach the sabot casing to the bullet. Take a look at powerbelt bullets. You might even be able to use a 45caliber powerbelt. I would say you will have to load one shell/stage at a time using a single stage reloader. Its going to be time consuming but it sounds like a fun project.

I think you are asking for trouble with this, first off the 410 is a bore and not a GA. This means that it is .410" whare a .45 Long Colt is .451".
Also the 410 is not a hight pressure round and with trying to push this much lead (even a 230 gr VS 87 gr for a slug.) will get very high pressure on the chamber.
This is your head that you are looking at but I hope that no one is standing near to you if you do this.
Just my thoughts in this.

7th your right about the bore etc but I had a Thompson Center Contender which is a 45 Long Colt and 410 all in the same barrel. You can shoot either. I think when I get some time I'll research it alittle. Besides the contender I really don't have any experience with the 410. I started on a 20 gauge.

Yeah you do need to watch the chamber pressure, a single shot 410 would do fine, especially a 410 with a 3inch chamber. That might be the way to go.

40,
Yes the TC has that Opp and if you look at the bb you will see that it is allot thicker walled then most 410's and is set to take the 45 Long Colt not set for the 410. My cousin told me that it is ok with shot out to about 10 yds and that is about all. I can not say this for shour having not shot one.
I would look at the Air Forc AR-7, it is a 22 lr over a 410, and even when they gave the boys 45 ACP's they did not give them "clips" to go around the case head to shoot in the AR-7 and this is allot lower then the Long colt.

Ive got a pretty cool .410 /.45 long colt pistol that I picked up from a show. Havent tested it yet but it says that either can be shot out of it.

I forgot that a .410 was the chamber not a gauge.

I also have the .410/.45 LC for my TC.

In a fairly recent issue of either Shotgun Sports or Shooting Times there was an article on shooting .410 slugs for deer. I am pretty sure it was Shotgun Sports, but I don't have that issue saved. I think they have a website that might help you find it.
