Man's best friend is my hunting buddy. I have a 2 year old beagle and she does ok with running rabbits, but she aint doesn't know near as much as she thinks she does(so stubborn). Anyway, what kind of dogs do you have and tell us a little about it.

A friend of mine and I have always had beagles, usually 3 to 4 and always ran them together and it was a blast running the dogs together the rabbits didn't have a chance. Now we're down to 1 dog and it's not the same the dog we have now isn't used to running by itself and its very unsure of itself, so its a very slow hunt. My buddy and I talked and we are going to get 3 more dogs this spring and start all over hopefully by oct we will be back in business. If you have never hunted with a pack of beagles that work well together you don't know what your missing it's a blast. We like a fast dog so no walkie talkies will do, the faster the better, as long as they can keep up with their nose lol. We have tried the field trial dogs and they are just to slow for us. "J"

I have 2 brittanies, females. One's 2 and the other is 5. They're good on pheasants and quail. They trained pretty quickly, are great pointers and retrievers, and they're great with the kids.

I think having dogs and hunting with good friends is what it's all about...

Sorry to hear about your Gordon Scott.

How soon are you looking to get a pup??

I've got 3 German shorthairs ranging in age from 61/2-11 1/2. I don't know that I'd even bother to bird hunt if I didn't have the dogs. I just like to watch them work.

I have an 31/2yr English Lab named Jake and 11/2 yr American Cocker Spaniel named Boone. Jake is a great upland dog and we are still working on Duck. I bought him when he was 2 and he had never hunted anything but pheasants. With alot of work he does great now. This yr so far he has 100 dove, over 50 duck retrieves, 12 Canadians, 50 pheasants, 12 sharptails, 7 Hungarian Partridges, 15 chuckar, 20 quail and 6 Woodcock. Just waiting to get some Ruffed grouse, but only made it out once and no luck. Boone is ACS and weighs around 30lbs. He was retrieving doves at 4 months though he liked to drop them and spit out the feathers. This season he has about 10 ducks, 15 pheasants he didn't get any sharptails when we were in North Dakota, 1 HUN, 30 dove, 10 quail, 5 chuckar and 2 Woodcock. Boone has a better nose than the lab, I learned that while hunting wild pheasants in ND. Boone could trail them for a mile where the lab would lose the scent but the lab was hard charging and could get the birds up that he could run down. I have been busy with a new baby girl and haven't been able to hunt hardly at all lately.

You ever hunt the old Kaul Clay Company property, Danoon owns it now I deer hunt it and always see alot of rabbits down there always wanted to bring the beagles down when I was scouting but never got around to it. If you get a dog this spring get ahold of me and I'll bring the dog down and we can run them up on the hill together. "J"

If anyone knows of a good area in central Ohio to run rabbits my beagle could use the work. The rabbits are getting scarce at DWLA. It doesnt help that I have been spending most of my hunting time chasing deer. Anyway, I would like to run her with some other beagles. Maybe it would help to sharpen her skills some.

If DWLA is Delaware state park then there are plenty of rabbits, I seen a bunch there hunting pheasants. Last year we shot several each time and with no dogs, when there was snow we think our best was 6. I haven't hunted them yet this yr so maybe they are getting scare up there but I know I seen quite a few pheasant hunting.

I've never heard of a Moutain Cur? Is that a different kind of coon hound? Is it a bloodhoud? Do you hunt with them. Fill us in on them a little more. I am curious.

CritterGitter,
Mountain Curs will hunt any game they are trained for. Coon, squirrel, lion, bear, boar, coyote, etc. They are natural tree dogs, fearless, and very loyal. They range anywhere from 30-60lbs, and have different bloodlines(Kemmer Stock Cur,Original Mt. Cur, Leopard Cur, etc).
Old Yeller was a Mountain Cur(in the book not the movie, the movie dog was a Lab).
In OH most Curs are squirrel and coon dogs. In the south they are the same plus boar and bear.
There are some great sites on the web to check them out. Some of the best Cur breeders and bloodlines are right here in OH.
