Bought myself a father's day gift - got a Moultrie D-40 at basspro. I'm excited! I figured out how to work it last nite, got pictures in daylite and flash after dark. I was prowling around to see how far away it would pick me up...it snapped me at about 28 yds. I was small in the picture, but I was there. Finally figured out offloading the pictures, so I'm good to go. Now I just gotta go hang it where I have permission to hunt. I'll be posting pictures soon, I hope!
The one thing I didn't like was the instructions...they were ok, but could have been easier. And I think it's gonna take me a while to figure out how to fine tune it for the settings that give the best results. the one thing I'm worried about is how long it takes to take another picture after it snaps one off.

Same first camera I bought in late winter. Put it out this spring. Easiest way to check it for me is to bring my digital camera, swap cards, and head home to download. I have been using the 3 shot pattern. Don't even use the video as I don't feel the need. Takes too much battery. I did increase to the higher quality pics for my needs. I don't get a million pics, but I want a decent look when I check them. Good luck and have fun with it!

I have the same camera also and I just use it with 2 or 3 shot mode, no video. I use an sd card in the slot with the highest resolution and it seems to do a good job. Last winter the flash stopped working on it so I sent it back to Moultrie, because it was under warranty, and they sent me a brand new camera back.

Welcome to the addiction....:bouncy:
This is going to be a sub-addiction to my consuming new whitetail addiction, I can see it.
I used to see the DeerCam subforum and think "what's the big deal?" Then I started reading the threads and got stuck on that, and it got so bad I had to go out and get my first cam. You guys got me hooked. And since it seems to work just fine I'll probably buy another two within the month. This could turn into an expensive habit real quick. :yikes: I now see a camera as "necessary".
My wife thinks I've lost my mind.
What I'm wondering...does it ever lighten up? This overarching, invasive, all-consuming lust for deer and all things deer related?

Gern, how long did it take them to get the new unit back to you?

Just so you know what to expect. I now have a second camera which is IR. Supposed to hold battery life for up to a year. Less than 1 sec trigger, and pretty good recovery time for $200. Bushnell Trophy Cam. I am loving it and now wondering if the lack of pics on the Moultrie is from the flash or bad positioning? I hate to change it because i am watching a fawn every couple weeks as it grows. Everytime I scout the area and/or change cards I am thinking a camera would be good here. . .or here. . . or maybe another over there. . .and just one more on this trail. . . how about over there. . .:tsk:
As you can see, there needs to be a balance of self-discipline with fiscal responsibility which I am so far maintaining by stopping at 2 camera purchases. I think to myself "Patience grasshopper!" There will be more cameras down the road, but a few hundred bucks on a couple cameras and 4 SDcards will have to do for now. That is as far as my fiscal responsibility part will let me spend for now. But my want is over on the other shoulder screaming  "Buy more, buy more, buy more!!!"

I would say a week or so. The only downside to the whole thing was that it cost 9 or 10 dollars to ship the original camera to them.

I'm the same way! I'd love to slap a camera on every trail, every funnel, every watering hole, every edge of every field or power line......etc etc etc. I've finally controlled myself to stop moving the camera around and have left it alone in the same place. I'm catching a set of twin fawns growing up on a daily basis along with several doe and a few smaller bucks (got a nice one once a few weeks ago, but he hasn't been back since).
Maybe its time to get another camera.....or two.....:D

Sethjamto- That is why I hate to move it. I am getting a fawn on the one cam, but only deer pics maybe every couple days. The other camera I have only checked once. Kinda my honey hole/do not disturb area. I am getting twins on this one which I hope are on the next SD card swap. Finally compromised the move. Just turned it around the other side of the tree which faces a ditch. Mature tracks following the ditch behind the camera are huge. Might get a decent buck pic after all. If nothing else, with the hot/dry weather they might be spending more time drinking out of the ditch.
dannmannn- You see where this is going? You are screwed. Better get some overtime or another job. You will be spending more money sooner than you thought.:)

So I finally got the cameras out for a week and picked up the first pictures on Saturday.
I had two cameras out, about 800 yrds from each other, so I'm picking up the some of the same deer on both.
Had lots of pictures that were blank - something triggered the cam but wasn't there in the photos...any ideas? Birds? Small animals hidden in grass?
Lots of eyes in the night up in the trees...I'm thinking owls?
The most surprising thing about these pictures is the complete lack of turkeys...I know they're thick in there, but didn't see a single one. No dogs, no coyotes...just deer.

OK, so I'm thrashin' around like a hooked fish here...I'm trying to put pictures so that they show in the thread with the text like all the other cool kids, but all I've been able to put up so far are thumbnail attachments and the above link to photobucket....a little help here?

You are almost there. Instead of pasting the pictures on the text space, use the icon that reads insert picture when you place the arrow on it. Then paste the link on the space provided. The picture should show up like the cool kids:D.

In photobucket, make sure you copy the direct link. Then here when the insert image screen pops open, delete the http thing in it and paste the link you copy from photobucket. Hope it works

I have the same camera and I learned to placed the camera facing north or south. Basically try to avoid the sun from hitting directly in front of it. That should help. I checked my cameras this last weekend and what are the chances that a freaking snail found a home right in the lens?. That caused a whitish object in the picture moving back and forth throughout the day :irked: Thankfully most of the pics came out ok.

Sadly, Bene, the property is not mine to bring other people to - I'm fortunate to have access myself.
I'm thinkin' - these are some skinny deer... scuffed up too
