MIAMI, June 19 (UPI) -- Former star NFL (http://www.upi.com/Sports_News/2009/06/19/Report-Bernie-Kosar-files-for-bankruptcy/UPI-11531245454725/#) quarterback Bernie Kosar has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, The Miami Herald said Friday.Kosar, 45, also an all-American signal-caller at Miami (Fla.) in the 1980s, said in the filing Friday his debts total $19.5 million, including nearly $1.5 million to the Cleveland Browns (http://www.upi.com/Sports_News/2009/06/19/Report-Bernie-Kosar-files-for-bankruptcy/UPI-11531245454725/#), the team for which he played from 1985 to 1993; $3 million to his ex-wife Babette; $725,000 to Jim Ferraro, the owner of the Cleveland Gladiators, an Arena Football League team; and a number of other major unsecured creditors, including Tampa's Florida Bank.
The report estimated his assets at between $1 million and $10 million and liabilities of between $10 million and $50 million.
The report said the filing comes is the latest of several setbacks following his NFL retirement in 1996, while with the Miami Dolphins.
He owns a home in Weston, Fla.; his wife divorced him in 2007; and the Florida-based Bernie Kosar Steakhouse went out of business last year.

another obama victim. even his grade school is going "out of business" next fall. The real estate must have done him in.

The divorce might not have helped either.
I've seen Bernie on TV a few times in the past year or 2 and he comes across as "odd", makes me wonder if there might be an issue with chemical dependency.
Bernie went to Boardman. I went to South Range, the next school to the south. I have friends that went to school with Bernie and they all say he was a really nice guy, sad to see him fall like this.

There are a lot of retired football players in continuing pain from taking a beating for years.

He lived large and party'ed it all away according to people who would see him around town. I cant remember who they say he was always hanging around with but it was another sports figure/coach.

To be honest, I don't feel sorry at all when a sports figure/actor/famous person goes under. Most of these people make more in a year than we make in an entire lifetime. We sometimes struggle to get by, and they live lavishly, then expect us to feel sorry for them when they hit rock bottom. Sorry, I don't feel bad at all...

Bad lifestyle + bad investments + bad marriage = something bad going to happen :mischeif:
Sorry to hear that about Bernie, not sorry for him. He was an unorthodox and clumsy quarterback but he was a leader for the Browns for many years and many big games. Sure, he was paid good money but nothing like salaries are today :mischeif:
Happens to the best of them...General Motors went bankrupt :16suspect1:
